Eh, it's not for everyone. Personally it gets a bit too cookie cutter for me at times. No one but tryhards, trolls or really high elo players like doing anything outside of the meta. Still, Skyping with friends and just being goofy in a match is too much fun.

Are the wing commander games on gog playable with keyboad and mouse? Or 360 controller at leastIAmNot_fun

You can play the game well enough with the keyboard alone, but it's also possible to use a 360 controller and the keyboard at the same time.

A joystick is recommended though.
