For now, I'd suggest just sticking with the recommended items until you get a better idea of the different roles each champion plays.

I honestly cant remember them being that bad. I dont think it was as bad as the few that were in Tactics Ogre: LUCT or in that Wii Fire Emblem game.illmatic87

or

Mercury Treads, in case of CC (crowd control) heavy team.

Banshee's Veil (situational)

You usually won't get to the last two items but those are fairly situational. Some like to do a second bloodthirster or a second phantom dancer. I'm not a fan of stacking items so I get black cleaver for the armor reduction. If the team is packing a lot of armor then get the last whisper.

Get those in whatever order you wish but you should get the boots first really. If you can't move to catch your opponent you might as well be another minion. LoL is all about positioning and punishing your opponent for every mistake they make.

Also mobafire.com is a good place for beginners to learn a bit more about the game and champs. Some characters will have ults that will probably really suprise you.

I know Tryndamere's, Lux's, Karthus' and Garen's ult blew my mind when I first saw them.
