Telltale Batman flopped.

The Telltale decline continues, with telltale signs of decreasing sales while games journalism continues to trump up the company, people are abandoning them in droves.

That's less than Minecraft Story Mode and Walking Dead Michonne, which sold on Steam dismally as well. Life is Strange, now the most successful game in the episodic adventure game genre, outsold Batman Telltale's Steam total in one day during the Steam Black Friday sale. It is also behind King's Quest and Dreamfall Chapters.

If Walking Dead Season 3 flops like this (not very likely but will probably not hit Season 2 sales either), Telltale is pretty much done, or is forced to go back to the drawing board and reinvent themselves like they should have done.

You mean it flopped in sales? Did anyone had high expectations for that? Was it disappointing as a game??

They have recovered, beating out Life is Strange.

I bought and played the first season of Batman and I didn't go back, and I am a big Batman fan. Their games are just boring now, slowly paced and graphics are outdated. I don't mind playing QTE games but they need to move along and keep me interested.

The good news just keeps rolling in.

I only paid full price for TWD Season 2.

I don't have much experience with their games. I played through The Wolf Among Us. It wasn't particularly my cup of tea but the concept was great. I bet the source material makes for an excellent read but the interactivity of the game was outweighed by the narrative. I also played through their take on the Monkey Island series and found that was more to my taste.

Generally though, from an outsider looking in, their games are far too similar looking. The mechanics and art styles look identical in each game. With the franchises they take on, there is so much potential to create really interesting point and click adventure games, even if they decided to take a more story oriented approach.

I guess their games just aren't for me, personally.

Are sales really that important that people forget to just enjoy a game? I mean I played all the episodes on my Xbox One and the game was fine if the story wasn't a bit strange. I won't spoil anything but the identity of the Children of Arkham leader was just like ok.

Life is Strange is at 3.4 million owners on steam, a million more than TWD S1.

And positive reviews don't mean it will sell...in fact, telltale games are flopping despite positive reviews. Borderlands wasn't a great seller.

Isn't Walking Dead S3 supposed to be great? That should pick them right back up.

EDIT: Yup, freedomfreak pointed that out. Telltale will be fine, by their own admission they were biding their time until they debuted their new engine with TWDS3

Borderlands was great (storywise)......but it did not sell as well as their past titles.

And TWD s3 will not do well enough to dethrone Dontnod.....telltale lost much of their goodwill.

Yet it still sells, Nevermind Apple just gave it GOTY.

But it is a good bellwether. Only when you got a truly crappy release in contrast to the consoles (an Arkham Knight) does it break the trend. How well it does on PC usually shows how well its done as a whole.

Don't know about sales, but I've enjoyed pretty much every Telltale series so far, including Batman. And I just completed Walking Dead: Season 3 episodes 1 & 2 yesterday, and loved them.

So I completely disagree that Telltale are in decline.

The only telltale game I cared for was back to the future and it was just ok.

Life is Strange is leagues better.

Episode 1 is free on steam,that´s why the steamspy numbers are so high. Before it went free,the numbers were far lower.

The only good telltale game is Strong Bad Cool's game for attractive People. Never played The Wolf Among Us but I hear its also good. But one thing is for sure: Its games are overpriced for what they are. Life is Strange is the epitome of the genre imo. Telltale has always been overrated ever since TWD. Still cant believe that shit grabbed plenty of GOTY awards...

So because one similar game beats it in sale it flopped?? Strong logic there batman....

I will always love Adventure games. I hope they keep making them. Wolf among us was awesome.

Yep. It was cute the first few times they made story games out of other IPs....

Not really my type of game either so I usually just ignore them.

Telltale needs to innovate, that shat isnt appealing at all. If i wasnt a story id go what a movie or read a book.

But see what actually happened. LIS sold plenty before episode 1 went free (around a million and a half), however, when it did go free, the game was also on sale and during that time, they picked up a million. After two more sales, they got another million, with half a million in the black Friday sale.

So when Episode 1 went free, Episode 2 was also free for those who purchased the game that week. Once the sale ended, the numbers stopped growing.

It flopped because it sold far less than their past games.

And each game they put out sells less than the last. TWD S3 may break that trend but it would be no where near the first two seasons.

Because they were ignorant of its flaws, and so Telltale didn't think they need to change.

I recently finished their 6 episode Game Of Throne series. Not too bad, but I think from now on I'll just stick with TWD and the other Wolf game for my Telltale fix. I enjoy their games from time to time, but their formula seems to work best with those 2 series . Also I can only handle so much cinematic games in my plate at once, dont want my gaming diet to get bloated with that stuff.

But their formula is simply put, outdated and behind the competition.

Dontnod and Red Thread took Telltales formula and expanded on it while Telltale sucks its thumb, while incorporating elements of past games and in Dreamfall's case, its legacy. Same goes for the Odd Gentlemen with King's Quest.

I liked the first episode, plan on picking up the season pass soon, it'll likely be on sale during the next big digital sale starting soon.

I really don't like waiting between episodes so I wait until they're all out so I can play them back to back.

I don't know how people enjoy those stiff animated interactive movies

They have made some poor choices, walking dead michonne and Minecraft could have been scrapped to get the walking dead 3 or wolf among is 2 out.

@texasgoldrush: Possibly, I haven't really played the competition's games as far as this type of cinematic experience is concerned. I do feel like I played too many of the Telltale games in recent years, so I'm starting to see through their "formula" and when that happens it takes me out of the experience/immersion.

Got the new Walking Dead Seas 3 though, I think I should enjoy it and I hope they mix it up a little bit. I regret getting The Borderlands ones though, I barely played them so one day maybe Ill give it another chance.

Life is Strange allows for more exploration of the area the character is in, even key to some of its puzzles and dialogue choices, and has a time rewind mechanic that is key to gameplay and even exploration.

Dreamfall Chapters has hub exploration and side quests, for an adventure game. It also has some classic adventure game features with its share of puzzles.
