The Switch has been rapidly dropping in status from my favorite console to a purchase I almost regret. I love the portability as I spend a lot of time away from home, but Nintendo's recent handling of things and their pricing is really making me angry. Seriously why do Switch games cost more than their counterparts? Why do they never go on sale? Why do they never drop in price?

I would love a portable copy Doom, Skyrim, Diablo, and Civ6, Ark..... but they are $60 each, I already own them, and they never go on sale. They aren't even going on sale for black friday. But black friday is offering up some sweet laptops, and that would open up access to my entire steam library... and its really got me thinking....

Eh...not really. I did same thing, I have the money from selling it and waiting to upgrade my PC, with zero chances I get Switch anytime soon. I planned to consider getting it again, maybe 3 years after something I really want releases, but I'm gonna need a whole new Switch and will never rebuy the current one. So basically talking after I get Xbox Scarlett, and maybe even after I get PS5 Slim as well.

I got good moneys worth back out of mine so was totally fine selling it, I just didn't have any reasons to own one and still don't. Majority of games I want on it I already owned, everything else I rather buy on Xbox or PC, and since I played all the games I wanted before selling, I'm good to go.

Why a laptop? Why not a desktop; get 50% (or, you know, a bunch) more power and ergonomics and a lot less cost.

Or is staying mobile more important?

I think switching, be it lap- or desk-top, is a great idea, though. Consoles and handhelds are great and all, but the fuller experience is on PC.

My friend's switch was collecting dust after BoTW, so much so that he accidentally broke it while moving furniture because he forgot he had one.

Why get a notebook computer when you can make a stronger desktop? Just use a laptop that's strong enough to use office, matlab, etc and stick to the stronger desktop for gaming.

@mrbojangles25: laptop because portability and I already own a desktop: amd fx 8350, geforce 970, 16 gigs of ram. Not top of the line anymore but wont be due for an upgrade until well after the next gen consoles release.

So you hate Nintendo's handling of things, and how NINTENDO prices things and then complain about 5 third party titles that Nintendo doesn't decide the price on. Ok.

Well I have no plans of getting rid of my Switch but if I did I know that I would definitely miss it especially when December 7th rolls around.

If you think a laptop will fill your portable gaming needs, go right ahead. I think you’re in for a lot of disappointment if you’re mostly going to use it that way though.

If you want cheap games - a Nintendo console is not the way to go.

I'm just gonna get a second hand one down the line to play a handful of the big name exclusives.

Bought at the start of the year somewhere with mario and zelda. Played them both didn't even complete them as i already saw all the content through streams. Sold it soon after.

While its a nice handheld, it just not practical and games are way to expensive on it for me to bother. With zero announcements that i am interested in, and paid online i couldn't bother with.

Probably won't buy another one as i didn't miss it for a second.

If you don't play it, sell it. Selling just before Smash Bros. comes is a bit weird in my book, but maybe you don't like Smash.

A laptop? For gaming? Hmm. Been there tried that. I wonder how much things have changed but I would never advise a laptop for gaming. I suppose as like a secondary platform it could be ok. I've never had so much money that I even considered something like that.

I personally can’t imagine life without my Switch. It brought back a lot of joy in gaming I didn’t realize I had lost. That being said you are you as I am I.

Buy a desktop. Laptops arent built for gaming IMO, even if they are often marketed as such. Id never advise anyone to buy a laptop for gaming.

Since you already have a desktop, I think you'll regret it. You'll have to spend a lot to play the modern games you named tolerably on a laptop; and the biggest bonus of the Switch isn't those games at all - it's the exclusive titles.

I own a Switch because it adds to my PC library, personally.

as someone who has bought a gaming laptop: unless you really absolutely have to have the portability: don't. it's great that the PC, as a platform, comes in both desktop and laptop form factors (and some handheld too) but laptops are not very upgradeable so you really need to spend a lot to get a great experience. my gaming laptop is a bit old now but it can still give modern titles a solid run. however it was not cheap and it is nto small or light (on a side note, as a general productivity and browsing machien though itll last decades.....probably).

as for the switch: if there are no games you fancy and you are done playing what you are currently playing then yeah. get rid of it. a switch with no games you are interested in is a bit useless. I have a switch though and am quite happy with it. it just needs an extra game save backup option. whe whole game save cloud behind a paywall option is BS.

Keep the Switch. It's a great little system, and you won't get much for selling it anyway.

Thanks to (mostly) everyone for the input. The particular laptop I'm looking at is an Acer Nitro with a geforce 1050 in it. On the Best Buy black friday special it is listed at a little over $500. I have a ton of games in my steam library, and I figured it would be cool to have totalwar and xcom portable. If anyone has any idea of how they run on the Acer nitro please let me know. And yes I know mario + rabbids is on the switch, but I ended up trading it back in, I just didn't enjoy it.

Then there is Smash Bros. Nintendo does make great games when they want to ut the rest of the time they are a bunch of aholes to their customers.

@regulator331: Imo, just keep it. If you do sell it, as what someone said. You already have a desktop. Don't forget to deactivate your account so, you'll have no issue in reusing your account.

I couldn't imagine trading in my Switch, especially with Smash and the 2019 lineup it's got but you may well have different preferences OP.

If I was in your shoes I would regret it but I guess go with whatever is more important to you: a Switch or a laptop.

Keep the Switch and upgrade your PC. It’s the best combo in gaming!

You can get a good Ryzen CPU and mobo for under $300. That should be your move imo

For mobile IGP category, both Intel HD 520/620 and HD 540/640 *can* play some XBO type games, but both mobile IGPs was defeated by RX Vega 8/10 Mobile (minimum to play XBO level games). Storage factor is important with multi-GB Steam/Microsoft store games.

Regardless of if I get to laptop or not I decided to keep the switch pretty much for the same reason I initially bought it, which is BOTW. I had forgotten how great it is.

You could get back $200+ for it pretty easily. Honestly, probably a good time to get rid of it with the rumor of them coming out with a hardware revision next year. Not sure if it will be like 3DS where they think they can raise prices after a revision, but if it's the same price I generally go for the newer hardware. Heck, I'm already on my 3rd PS4. Last gen I traded a bunch of PS3's and 3DS's "just because" when the prices would make it almost an even trade. Worst case I would usually net myself some free games (or nearly free) out of the deals.

I could have been tempted by a better bundle, but $299 for Mario Kart or $360 for a Smash bundle? LOLNO. That's pretty funny with the PS4 dominating at $199.

Switch's library will keep getting bigger. Excited for the MegaDrive compilation releasing soon and of course Smash.
