The original Xbox innovated in many ways and borrowed in others. It was a work of passion, the brain-child of powerful forces and of smart minds.

Of course, like all consoles, it had its flaws, and mistakes were made byMicrosoftas the company attempted to claw its way into the games space. But there can be no doubt that the original Xbox made a huge difference to gaming.

By the end of its life in late 2005, it had set the stage for the gaming world we know today. Xbox changed gamers' expectations, technology's standards, and the future of other hardware companies' console ideals. Here are ten ways the original Xbox changed the world.IGN

You can read the full article here. It lists the various contributions that the original Xbox made to gaming.

You may not like Microsoft or the Xbox but you can't deny that the brand has been a hugely influential player in modern gaming in the last decade. I wonder where Microsoft will take the Xbox brand next?

I would say two things primarily that immediately come to mind:

Xbox Live (indisputable)--online perfection on consoles.

Halo--only rivaled by Call of Duty when it comes to revolutionizing and perfecting the FPS genre.

This needs to be clarified to say "Modern Console Gaming". All of the things mentioned here were already pioneered on the PC, so "gaming" as a whole is an inaccurate statement, but for "console gaming" it makes more sense.

It also induced back problems in the children that had to carry those things home. Poor kids.

And yeah, I'd easily say that Halo 2 was one of the most influential games of the previous generation.

Easily. Possibly one of the most influential games of all time as far as console gaming is concerned.

For the lazy, here's what IGN mentioned:

1. It Created a Console Community

2. Access to Downloadable Games

3. Big, Fat, Delicious Downloadable Content

4. Hard Drive Storage

5. Firmware Updates

6. Birth of the Media Center

7. Love of Local Multiplayer

8. Hello, High-Def

9. Parental Control

10. It Made Microsoft a Player

Some entries on the list are absolutely rubbish. But then again, you can't expect all that much out of top 10 lists these days.

Sounds like they broke down a single thing into ten. All they are saying is, they changed consoles into something more akin to a PC. It sounds just like something Microsoft would do.

lol if someone were to say the xbox is black people would rush in to either say they copied or that it is not a good enough black.

the point was they brought those things to us lowly console scum.

Joedgabe

Well that was what xbox actually did. It did port PC features and PC devs onto consoles. It ported multiplayer online games and western developers who previously reigned on PC like Bioware for example. With the birth of a western console coming from a big PC software maker, it may well be one of the reason why wrpgs got more popular than jrpgs or why one of the most popular genre on consoles is multiplayer online shooters, something that was exclusive to PC.

Xbox is the digital equivalent of Chlamydia.

What they "gave" modern gaming is vapid games like Halo/Gears and made consumer fraud a family value.

I can't believe they listed DLC as a good thing. Also, the Xbox could only do 480p/720i which is why everyone scoffed back in the day at its claims of "HD gaming".

that article sucks.

First off, that list is extremely inflated. The only part I would give credit for is their contributions to online gaming. That covers the downloadable content and XBL.

Second, it fails to mention the REAL contribution that Xbox gave to the console world. Microsoft flexed its industry connections to bring PC games into the console arena. This was done before but now PC games ALWAYS get put on consoles. There are exceptions of course but if it is technically feasible and if the controls port over decently then it is expected that a PC dev release a console version (and notice that this doesn't go the other way around). The effect of what Microsoft did is still being felt to this day, and their old connections are still there and mean that they still get more PC ports than anyone else and their ports are usually the best console version. That might change someday but it has given them a huge boost in their first 2 gens.

Seriously, how could they miss that?

DLC is a good thing, if done right.

The problem is that it's almost never done right. Cracked actually put up a really good article a day or two ago about why DLC sucks. I wouldn't hate it as much if it weren't for the fact that DLC has replaced expansion packs, so now instead of paying $30 for a mini-sequel, you pay $15 for a couple more hours, and then another $15 for another few hours, and then ANOTHER $15 for another few hours, and so on until you've paid more for the DLC than you did for the actual game. I also hate that now that publishers have seen how profitable DLC can be that they're preventing people from modding games on PC.

Well you mention negative influence. The original xbox did nothing but positive things. It wasn't until new people took over the xbox division when things went sour--microtransactions and forced dlc.

I think people are missing the point. We all know PC was doing these things years before but Xbox made them mainstream and brought them to the public eye.

I also find it funny to think that the Xbox had a bigger influence on the PS brand rather than vice versa.

I still think it's the best console ever made. You lot can bang on about whatever but I had some truly great times with my Xbox. Not to get corny but I will literally remember them for years to come.
