As for the person bashing the Wii because of its "obsolete" architecture, my PC is older, and I built it myself. It won't run Crysis on full, but you know what? I still love my PC, and I didn't spend tons of money on it. It does what I want it to do, and that is great for me.
Likewise, the Wii is affordable, it plays some great games that everyone I know can enjoy, and it is reliable.
I also have a 360, and I love it for the amazing things that it can do in HD, but that power is not for everyone, and neither is the price sticker.
If you are bent on hating it because of its supposed defiecencies in its hardware, no one will change your mind. But if you actually play it, I don't think many people would say, "This Wii Sports game isn't photo-realistic, I hate it."
Based on the Wii's success, I would say Nintendo took a gamble, and it is striking a chord with the general public. The same people who don't know the difference between cel-shading and dynamic lighting, and don't care too. The Wii is here, and it is going to stay and succed.

You've taken some time, and I like your color-coding, you absolutely deserve a reply.

[QUOTE="subrosian"]Ten Ways to Improve the Wii

1. Make widescreen support mandatory for all Wii games.
Widescreen support? What games don't run in widescreen?

Warioware: Smooth Moves, Rayman Raving Rabbids, and Trauma Center.

2. Quality screen the PS2 ports. If your game looks the same on the Wii as it does on the PS2, we don't want it. Nintendo has this power, they should use it.
What are you talking about? Zelda looks better than a PS2 game. Heck, GC games look better than PS2 games.

I'm talking about Nintendo putting the clamp-down on third parties who simply port PS2-graphics to the system. The reason you require licensing is to prevent a flood of shoddy games to store shelves.

I'm not faulting Nintendo's own games, the finger is pointed at third parties.

3. Online ranking, online *now* - start with the Mario Sports games, bundle the ability to play against "strangers" with a rank system. Matchmaking won't be based on rank, but "leveling up" for playing lots of games - it will be a nice reward for hardcore gamers.
You are lucky Nintendo is even doing online play, so don't complain yet.

I don't feel "lucky" - I feel entitled. The DS has online play, I can play AC with anyone on this forum who owns the game. I'd love to be able to play some Smash with my little brothers, without having to drive two hours to visit.

4. Clean up the party - enough party games, the third parties have it more than covered - we don't need a dozen tech demos on the market when Wii Sports comes bundled already.
Games are games. No one tells the 360, no more shooters, or Sony no more FF games.

Nintendo only has so many people in its company who develop games. I would rather see them focus their internal development teams on core games if the third parties are flooding the market with party games.

5. Where's Mario - no seriously, Galaxies, Paper, and Kart are mandatory games to get out ASAP.
He is coming. Jez, a launch without Mario, teh horror. Give it a bit. They had Zelda and the first system to actually come with a game free at launch in years.

Yeah, Wii Sports is a nice pack-in. The sad thing is, I've somewhat exhausted it on friends systems already. I'm not saying "a launch without Mario" - it's also a launch without a steady pipeline in place for the next few months. The post-launch slump is always a bit sucky, especially if the Wii is going to be your first next-gen system.

6. Smash Bros ... worldwide, regional, and local leaderboards - ok Nintendo?
Why are leaderboards a big deal? Cheaters, modders, and glitchers are the only ones up there.

Cheaters and modders aside, it's really nice to have a level, rank, whatever, next to your character. Leaderboards and ranking systems becoming bragging-rights things among friends. Yeah, the top 100 or so are usually cheaters, but that doesn't take away from the special feeling that comes from moving-up as you get better in the game, or the awe of watching skilled players.

7. Special Editions in the US / UK - seriously, stop keeping the cool consoles in JPN this generation. There are *plenty* of Nintendo fanboys who would pay anything for a Shigeru Miyamoto signature "Triforce Wii".
I'll agree on this one.

Seriously, have you seen some of the special editions they've done in Japan? It's nuts, and they don't have to pay some importer hundreds just to get a glimpse of one.

8. Make Dolby Pro Logic II support mandatory for all games.
Pro Logic is terrible anyway. If anything, Dolby Digital, but any decent reciever can make 2 channel stereo into Dolby Pro Logic anyway. Why waste Nintendo's time?

I like knowing that there are standards being set for how audio and video are output. It's fair enough to say any decent reciever can split stereo into 5.1 though - and yes Dolby Pro Logic II doesn't have discrete channels and won't sound like true Digital 5.1 surround ever, but still, it's about setting standards for the developers.

9. Colors
I'm not looking to rebuy a console cuz its blue. Lets focus on getting enough white ones on store shelves first.

I'm not going to buy a second console just because a new color came out, but I like having some choices. In the next few months it would be cool if more colors came on the market.

10. Metroid Prime Online multiplayer - CTF, Slayer, King of the Hill, Assassins, et cetera. Please, don't repeat MP2...
The Wii Friend Code system seems more in need of fixing than this, but its your list...

Agreed, but the Friends Code system can be fixed in game by simply setting up usernames and matchmaking within a game itself. I would think it would be pretty easy to have first party games allow you to  add a strangers friend code to your list, or let you come up with a nickname for yourself.

Crysis is DX10 i believe, so at least part of your architecture must be new. Also, all DX10 chips are PCI-E right now meaning that your hardware is not more then 4 years oldm as anything older then 4 years old has agp

I agree with pretty much all your points. If there is one I take issue with, it's this one:
2. Quality screen the PS2 ports. If your game looks the same on the Wii as it does on the PS2, we don't want it. Nintendo has this power, they should use it.subrosian
Definately, Devs should make the Wii versions of games look better than the PS2 versions. But I grow leery of anything calling on Nintendo to say to 3rd parties essentially "We're going to tell you how to make your game". The last thing Nintendo can afford to do now is drive off 3rd party support. These ports may not seem appetising, but they sell and it's a good way for Devs to introduce themselves to the system. If Nintendo keeps devs from testing the waters, they may get cold feet and just run off. My thing I'd add is Fix the Virtual Console. NES, SNES, and Genesis games all work brilliantly. But, for some reason, the emulation on the TG16 is just wonky. And the N64 games can't use the control pak functionality. Fix that. If they're going to charge the prices they are, they might as well amke sure it's working properly.

And how old is the x86 architecture used in Intel processors? Further, how is that relevant to improving the existing Wii? Are you suggesting Nintendo release a "Wii HD" system that has better graphics, three months after launch? I'm *pretty sure* that would destroy anything resembling a "fanbase" that Nintendo has.

[QUOTE="hiho24"]Buy a 360 or quit complaining. Nintendo doesnt need to hear about how to improve the Wii when its doing so successful. Sure there is room for improvement but then again Nintendo is it's own company and doesnt need to hear about it from you. Obviously they arent stupid, and they will put in what they see fit for their budget. They are not like Sony and Microsoft and they dont intend to be. If only you would have payed attention to the past 2 e3's then you would not have to post a thread suggesting improvements.

Thats like telling Microsoft how to run their company, or telling the colts how to play football. Room for improvement? Always.

Sure those would be great to have in the system, and I'm not saying I dont want them. Nintendo is working on what they think is best. And obviously they are doing well, I dont see any reason why to try to fix something that isnt broken.
fedameda

Massive room for improvement. At the least they could have widened the pipelines, but they didn't. It barely cost them any money to make the damn thing. They could sell it for $150 and still make massive profits. They fact that they shove a crappy 6 year old architecture with such a massive price is appalling. Well with your logic, the Nazi party wasn't broken, so who should we have gone in and fixed it?

I'm not talking politics!

Of course the Wii has room for improvement. But I find the demands in these numerous threads to be unrealistic and pointless. Microsoft has built their system around what they think is successful. Well obviously if Nintendo was to follow the route of Sony and Microsoft then it doesnt explain the reason why the DS is selling like crazy and theWii following suit!

As I said previously, Nintendo has already stated their stance in gaming at the past couple E3's. Sure it can use improvements. But all people do is bring out lists of things to do. There is never a satisfaction point, the reason why Nintendo sells at a profit is because they know how to play the market. They modeled the Wii to the way they think is best. Nintendo has the money and even stated that it has the money to create a system such as the Xbox 360. But they purposely didnt. If you watch the Videos of Reggie speaking of Market distruption, it is directly on que.

They said what they were going to do, they are doing exactly what they predicted. And of course everything is going to need improvement, but it seems as though game fans are too hungry for more and more to look at the factors. Nintendo built its internet around being free and affordable for themselves so they may continue to provide free service. This comes with restrictions. Same goes for their hardware, and their pricepoint.

When you play a game of monopoly, you must play by the rules, you cant expect to be able to pull 200 extra dollars when you pass go. Nintendo set its limits on what it needs to do and will continue to improve, they dont want to alienate their developers again. They will finish games when they are ready with good quality. They will launch online when they tell us, we arent even sure what it will be like, and they will play their role in the industry the way they need to.

Room for improvement? Yes.  Set standards for 3rd party devs? no not at this time, they dont want to alienate again.  Mario now?  No! wait until it is complete!
