Scott Warner (former Ubisoft game director) has joined Tencent.

Another reminder that China owns majority of game industry.

Funding problem solved.

I'll be worried when CDPR and Fromsoft becomes partially owned by China. Until then, nothing much is lost, not like Ubi knows how to make video games.

How is a Chinese state-owned compay like Tencent expanding into the U.S. and Europe a "good" thing?

Basically the same exact thing as saying "the Chinese government is expanding into US and Europe gaming". Tencent is completely controlled by the CCP and we've already seen the extent of the damage to freedom of speech they've caused in the past WITHOUT EVEN HAVING MAJORITY OWNERSHIP OF SHARES! Do we really want people getting banned from esports championships for simply voicing support for Hong Kong? Do we want sketchy af anti-cheats with full Windows kernel admin rights on our PCs running 24-7 when the game isn't even running?

Not to mention anything you say/type in a Tencent game/app is subject to CCP monitoring because Tencent has 0 rights. They're CONTROLLED BY A CORRUPT COMMUNIST DICTATORSHIP. Do you guys understand that? Do we really want to support a control freak dictatorship that gives human rights the middle finger and has done many awful inhumane things including covering up the coronavirus and arresting doctors for "spreading rumors" when they simply tried to warn their family members of the virus on WeChat(tencent app btw)?

Tencent seems to be on a conquest to acquire shares in as many popular apps and game companies as possible lately and the whole thing just reeks of an agenda to control as much media as possible. And it disgusts me that it isn't discussed more. They went from nobodies to the biggest gaming coorporation in the world in such a short time yet people don't even understand who they are or what level of power they have on a worldwide scale.

Please just do the whole world a favor and boycott them as much as possible. You're essentially willingly giving them a vote that you're OK with controlling/censoring your favorite game devs and a large portion of your money going to one of the most corrupt, manipulative, lying, hypocritical governments on the planet that views the west as it's enemy and has the potential to be the next Nazi Germany level threat to the free world.

I think in the hypothetical that Nintendo were really pressed with back to back platform failures, would probably just abandon hardware and strictly develop/publish games for other platforms.

Their games are their biggest strength, only reason why they've lasted and even thrived in the console space for this long.

Don't @me nintendoboy.

Honestly, I absolutely hate Trump, but I agree with him on his stance against China. In fact, they should ban TikTok. I didn't mind it too much until they went full blown psycho in 2019 with South Park, Blizzard and the NBA.

@Messiahbolical-: By that logic, don't use Spotify, Snapchat, Reddit, and Discord either. They invested into those companies as well. Just about every mainstream game has some Tencent involvement.

Give it 5 years, and we'll see Chinese propaganda in video games.

Path of Exile got bought by Tencent (80% ownership) almost 2 years ago and so far nothing changed.

Riot games is 100% owned by Tencent since 2011 and they've done just fine.

Curious what's shady about Tencent? Which western game have they forced to be changed ?

Tencent isn't state-owned. It's largest shareholder is Naspers, a South African-based tech investment firm. Its founder is the second-largest holder, and then you hit a whole bunch of names that familiar names in the world of investment in the west: Fidelity, Vanguard, Blackrock and JPMorgan.

With tensions rising between China and the rest of the world, especially America, I'll be surprised if they're allowed to encroach on U.S. soil.

It wouldn't be so bad if it was a Chinese company coming to America to simply make a buck. Reality is that its a Chinese company and thus, they're under the thumb of their government regardless of where in the world they're located. That means there will always be an alternative reason for what they're doing than merely trying to make a buck.

Yup, which proves one thing: they are all about the monetization.

Obviously people get into business to make money, but a lot of people get into business because they care about the craft they pursue and want to make their mark in it.

I don't think Tencent cares about this, they just want to boost revenue. Hence the extreme interest in a lot of mobile gaming developers, and a lot of developer/publishers that focus on microtransactions (Ubisoft, Epic, Activision-Blizzard, and Paradox Interactive).

The fact this is a state-owned company is also worrisome because games should take risks, should make social statements....but they won't if a government holds the reins.

**** anything Chinese, as their shitty government slapped Aussie farmers an 80% tariff on products for the next 5yrs just because our Prime Minister asked for an independent review into the origin of the Coronavirus.

I need to make a list of any companies that these arseholes have a stake in and never buy anything from them ever again unless its used.

I'm @'ing anyway because... what? hardwenzen brought up the question if 'what if Tencent owns Nintendo (which would be BAD)', not the question that makes me want to start drinking like Colbert here:

Pretty sure no one wants China to own Nintendo. Not even it's devout haters. Hell, Hong Kong protesters did them a favor by forcing China to ban Animal Crossing (not kidding).

So the game is not remodel for western audiences. Tencent is not so scary as some people make it look like.

The game is touted for having stupidly quick turn-around on updates that have kept the community thriving. Plus they're pushing the industry forward with interactive experiences, like the recent concerts they've put on in-game. Epic Games is currently running one of the most popular gaming phenomenons in recent history.

Ironically, PUBG is far more popular than Fortnite in China. Most Chinese gamers prefer the Korean-owned game (PUBG) over the Chinese-owned game (Fortnite).

Well, the difference is that China actually went through with banning Facebook & Twitter, whereas US attempts at banning TikTok & Huawei have failed. The GOP don't have anywhere near as much power in the US as the CCP does in China. The GOP wants to be like the CCP, but can't because they live in a democracy.

It's not about who's banning whom first but rather the hypocrisy shown by the US. Had China not protected its infant tech industries, the whole world would've been a tech colony of the US (see EU). US sanctions a country and companies in other countries have to comply or else risk losing assets or be arrested (see Hauwei). I'm not saying China is right but they're learning the new rules of capitalism from USA.

@Jag85: The problem is not banning Huawei in the US. It is banning them from buying parts from US companies that is ridiculous.

@kadin_kai: Every Chinese company is a state owned company lmao. You're not allowed to get rich in China without submitting to the CCP's whims, and if you disobey the CCP they can take all of your money in an instant. There's a reason so many rich Chinese people launder their money overseas in family member's hands, huge frivolous investments, expensive cars, properties, etc that way the money can't be controlled by the CCP. Don't confuse China for a free country. They pride their self on control.

Consider talking facts! Every Chinese company is state-owned? Where do you get your intelligence from? The place where the sun doesn't shine?

Fact: Tencent is not state-owned a quick search on the internet will tell you that if you're capable of doing so! Millions of Chinese companies have nothing to do with the state.

You sound just like Trump, ignorant to facts!

God awful comparison. You're comparing a government with limited power who is only allowed to enforce app monitoring for anti-terrorist purposes and must disclose paid propoganda. Compared to a government that wants control of apps to silence freedom of speech and human rights and has a proven track record of spreading paid propoganda unknowingly even in other countries. A government who arrests or murders people for voicing a negative OPINION of them. Arrests f***ing DOCTORS for trying to warn their family members about the Coronavirus on WeChat because they want to cover up the virus from the rest of the world.

You should be ashamed as a human being for defending the CCP after everything they've done and continue to do. This is the same regime that's murdered millions of their own citizens, still has Nazi germany style concentration camps, and is still oppressing multiple sub-ethnic groups as we speak. US Government isn't perfect by any means but this is 2 completely different situations we're talking about. CCP is on a whole nother level of f***ed up. And if you tell yourself anything else you're buying into their BS and supporting what they're doing.

I do agree, US doesn't play fair either. They forced Japan in the 80s and sabotaged their semiconductor industry to protect American's which in term severely effected the Japanese economy. They are so used to bullying everyone around that they can't understand how have the tables been turned when it comes to China.

In reality both China and US are the same. It's just that China is way way worse in terms of human rights and minorities but US isn't far behind either.

Honestly, I absolutely hate Trump, but I agree with him on his stance against China. In fact, they should ban TikTok. I didn't mind it too much until they went full blown psycho in 2019 with South Park, Blizzard and the NBA.

China: We're banning FB & Twitter. We can't control them, national security threat

USA: No, you're just blocking US competition!

Big hire! Having a U.S. CEO could help TikTok navigate relationships with U.S. regulators.

I partly agree with your post. Economic protectionism can sometimes be beneficial. It helps developing countries protect their local industries from being monopolized by foreign multinational companies. In that regard, I think China may have done the right thing in banning American sites like Google, Facebook, and Twitter, so that its own sites like Baidu, Weibo and WeChat could grow and thrive. While these Chinese sites are often seen as cheap "rip-offs" of US sites, that's not always the case. Ironically, it was actually Google that ripped-off Baidu's prototype site RankDex, not the other way around.

I also agree that the Huawei charges are bullshit. Why should a Chinese company give a damn about US sanctions on Iran? Non-American companies can do business with whatever countries they want. The GOP is clearly using the Iran sanctions as an excuse to undermine Huawei because they see it as a potential threat to US companies. However, why is the GOP resorting to such underhanded tactics in the first place? Because they can't ban Huawei directly. The GOP need to go through a democratic process before they can ban a foreign company, whereas the CCP has all the power to ban whatever it wants.

In other words, the GOP and the CCP are both scumbags. But the GOP is the lesser of the two evils. The GOP's detainment camps don't come anywhere close to the size and scale of the CCP's concentration camps, where they're perpetrating human rights abuses against millions of people. Then there's COVID-19, which originates from China's wet markets, where it's legal to abuse and torture animals, and eat any animals, which led to the virus spreading from bats to humans. Even after the outbreak, the CCP arrested doctors to hide the truth and allowed it to spread it across the world. Of course, the GOP's gross negligence and conspiracy nonsense caused COVID to spread across the US, but the CCP is responsible for spreading COVID to the world. So it's not exactly "hypocritical" to hate the CCP more than the GOP. They're both POS, but the CCP just happens to be the bigger POS.

Forgive me for being naive as I don't know the whole story about Tencent, but as a western gamer who casually follows headlines about them, I have no issue with Tencent. From what I have seen, they have a knack for spotting talent and acquiring quality developers. If they want to throw big money the way of the developers and let them do their thing, this is a good thing.
