Yeah PC users do not support devs in buying original games. MW sold almost 13 to 14 millions on Consoles.badtaker
if they sold that much loosing 2-3mlns of PC sales won't hurt them, while companies like Bohemia Interactive, Tripwire or Futuremark...ie companies who really support PC gamers and are unlike IW actualy deserving of our money could use that money. Give it to people who care about PCgaming, not to people who treat it like crap

http://weblogs.variety.com/the_cut_scene/2009/11/dedicated-servers-and-rage-news-you-probably-dont-want-to-hear.html

"It's not cast in stone yet, but at this point no, we don't think we will have dedicated servers," he says.

"John Carmack, co-founder and technical wizard of the developer, says the company doesn't plan to support dedicated servers for the multiplayer component of "Rage," id's upcoming new action game."

Nice job consolites. Thanks for helping to ruin PC gaming.

Control over content is not impacted at all by P2P hosting under modern networking models. In fact, I'd go as far to say that barring a server side application that needed constant tweaking, (an MMO or something of the sort) client side hosting is much more reasonable, fair, competitve for the players, and cost effective for the company that would be hosting the log in seveevilross
You're missing the point. We PC gamers don't give a crap about fairness in our online communities. By forcing P2P networks, you're engaging in social engineering of the worst kind. This is illustrated by IW's recent statements about wanting to "rework how the online community runs" because they "didn't like how people seperate off into little groups". Tough cookies consolites, thats how the PC community works. Its called survival of the fittest. If anything, this "more fair" concept is a huge burn on those that love the PC online community. Those of us who like to have our High def CHI servers are incredibly angry. And yes, we do lose a degree of freedom in implementing the things that we want. In P2P networks, you indeed do lose a degree of control over the servers. You are no longer able to institute your own PAM or RCON settings. All of that is handled by the game client itself. It ruins the competitive nature of the game because we are unable to host PUGs at will on servers that we host with latencies far better and with the RCON settings we want.

I didn't even know the game had multiplayer to be honest. I might wait for this one to come down in price before buying it. Good thing they come down fast on PC.

it's funny because it's funny Seriously, don't you (as PC gamers) have better shooters to play? Even as a console gamer, I have better shooters/games to play than MW2. This seems like a non-issue. Just don't buy it.

OT, TC this is hardly the consolites fault. It's a business decision from the devs to move away from hosting dedicated servers. In this economic climate, it's hardly surprising, and cuts are being made in every company. It sucks, but we'll wait and see how this unfolds.

lundy86_4
But why take away something that costs little or nothing to them, or are you forgetting that most PC dedicated servers are hosted by other users?

This thread bleeds ignorance, especially from developers. PC games sell moderate amounts over a long amount of time, it's all a cycle; hardware prices drop, game sales carry on as more people can afford to upgrade to whatever rig they want. Console games just sell a few hundred thousand/million in a few months, which is what publishers (sup Activision) want in this economic climate.

And yes, most dedicated servers are not run by the actual developers/publishers, third party companies such as jolt or multiplay.co.uk have their own dedicated boxes and users rent them for clan hosting/public communities.

Though, I was never interested in rage - the potential communities on the PC are not gonna happen as it seems. welp !

Edit - And it's not like it will even matter in a few generations, consoles are becoming more PC like, PCs are "losing" features (though the choice of a PC system will never die), the two will eventually become so similar that it's possible things will be ran in the same manner, there will be no competition and everything will be extortionately priced, gg.

Carmack can do no wrong. He owns PC gaming.

If Carmack does not care for dedicated servers he has a reason, and its not just money and its FAR from being lazy or not caring.... when has John Carmack ever done anything but put his best and latest out for people to see?

Anyone slamming ID for this is just a whiny baby, looking for something to cry about. There isn't even any real info on what Rage MP is about, ,much less what Doom 4 MP will have.

In short, no matter how mch of a PC fanboy you are. John Carmack > you.

Threads like these amuse me.:)

Oh, and why blame consolites instead of consoles?

Granted its the consoles popularity that creates consolites but you should actually be blaming the corporations that create these apparent newsances to the earth.

Yes, because the developers or publishers themselves certainly had nothing to do with the removal of dedicated servers from the PC version of the game. No, the blame falls on people who had absolutely nothing to do with the game's development.

P2P MP costs MORE! So why would companies who "suffer" low sales do that? Doesn't make any sense.

I think they're just ****ing with you! Actually, how much do you want to bet they're actually being told to push people off the PC platform because it allows for too much? I mean, you know the devs have to look at MODs like DOTA and be like, god damn that game is stealing all my sales!

How does it cost more? Players rent servers from server farms for dedicated servers. That cost lots of money. To host your own game it cost nothing.

But the money doesn't come out of IW's pocket. It comes out of the pockets of other users. Now they have to maintain the gatekeeper (IWnet) servers, which they have to own and operate. And they wonder why Microsoft charges $50 a year for Live Gold? Well, IW will soon learn of the server and bandwidth costs associated with this approach.

IWnet requires gatekeepers and infrastructure similar to Xbox Live. That takes servers: servers that (for the sake of security) IW must control.

but the ones paying for servers are players, not devs. With P2P devs need to provide much bigger server use for all the match making, tracking etc. So low sales can't be a reason, because it's just illogical to have devs spend more because games sell less

There are many things i don't like about servers. For instance I can't create a player hosted game and get anyone to join because there are 10,000+ empty servers to go through or 1000s of small populated servers. i don't understand why there needs to be so many servers when so few play these games. With the Xbox you can team up with a few friends and jump around playing different people and to me that's a lot more fun than playing on any dedicated server.

So basically the only way you can operate your own game is by renting a server for $100 a month and that's what Activision decided to move from. It can also be because these servers can easily be hacked for illegal copies to play.

Or it could be PC developers are figureing out they will never get money out of the elitest pc gaming masses and their calls of free every thing including FREE pc games, so they are concentrating on us console gamers whom actually show our developers support via money.

WilliamRLBaker

Last time I checked, 360 games get pirated quite frequently. PC gamers pay for games or devs would save their time and resources and just not make PC titles. Dedicated servers are important. It has been discussed over and over. Oh well, what can you do.

Where as console gamers brag about exclusive aaa titles and looking at PCs exclusive aaa titles in the last 12 months I can see why they don't brag about that  Sims 3 and WOW

Many people (especially dedicated clans) would find the opposite true. Dedicated server matches tend to be more organized since people choose the server they join. Also, for smaller games, you don't need to rent out a huge $100-a-month dedicated server--a decent spare machine hooked up to the cable/DSL/FiOS link will usually suffice.

This isn't the consolites' fault; it is the PC gamers, AKA pirates. Maybe, if you stop pirating, PC developers can sigh in relief knowing they may be able to sell around 3 million copies of hard produced games.

You're welcome! Gaming belongs on a console. Use your PC for what a PC was designed to do.

After all, PC means Personal Computer. So what if my Personal free time involves gaming?

[QUOTE="XenogearsMaster"]This isn't the consolites' fault; it is the PC gamers, AKA pirates. Maybe, if you stop pirating, PC developers can sigh in relief knowing they may be able to sell around 3 million copies of hard produced games.

And maybe if PC developers would stop jerking their chains and produce something worthwhile with not a lot of hoop-jumping, then perhaps more people will take the game and their developers more seriously. Stardock isn't complaining much. Valve doesn't seem to complain.

Exactly. The fact is, PC's can also be built for gaming. Therefore they can be gaming centric, such as my gaming rig.

your welcome. go back an play the only thing you have to brag about anymore......crysis.

KingBungie

obvious troll is obvious. i wont even bother citing the 50+ games that are in any way equal or better than crysis

I actually kinda agree with him.. Most PC fanboys seem to brag about graphics and bring up Crysis all the time

Where as console gamers brag about exclusive aaa titles and looking at PCs exclusive aaa titles in the last 12 months I can see why they don't brag about that  Sims 3 and WOW

PC gamers don't brag about graphics, consolites just keep bringing crysis into the discussion, resulting in console pwnage. FYI WoW is over 5 years old. PS Sims 3 has sold more than any console game, and the sims series has sold more than 200 million copies, enough to put any and every console game to shame (since consolites always bring up sales)

Nobody even knows what the multiplayer consists of, so all the bashing is baseless.

For the millionth time, not including the OPTION for dedicated servers has absolutely, positively nothing to do with piracy. If anything, it increases costs for the company and decreases potential revenues.
