The fact that Grand Theft Auto is even on this list leads me to believe you haven't played any of these games.

Really?I have played GTA: VC,GTA: SA,GTA: Liberty city stories and GTA IV and I'm a fan of the series,but I must admit that they are very violent,there isn't an option to blow heads or use a chainsaw in GTA IV though,so it's less violent than the others.I wouldn't have put them in that list if I didn't play them. One could go through the games and not have to do any of that to complete them. Maybe you don't have to do any of those things while free-roaming,but there are some missions that force you to kill cops,like "Three leaf clover" in GTA IV.
From what I've played I'm going with Manhunt as number 1 but not because it's visually gory or anything, but because of the way all the murders are performed, the dark atmosphere of the game etc. It's really the psychological aspect that makes it so gruesome.

It can get a little violent though, depending on how you play. Or maybe I misunderstood the topic..I thought it was about violent games too.
The topic was meant to list the goriest,most bloody and violent game series,so gore is just one aspect of the topic,violence,setting,blood and atmosphere are factored too,that's why GTA is there,because of violence,not the gore or blood like I mentioned in the list.
