The difference is it doesn't have a gimmicky 3D decked all out and blazoned on its Box as advertisement, then all of a sudden you realize you can switch the 3D off and have few games or lack there of that actually fully implement the 3D feature......a feature most users don't have a tolerance for after long durations of playing. That's why most people aren't sold by it. Which led to such an unusual early price drop and explains why older DS models are still selling like crazy. Those that say otherwise regarding that 3D feature, are really mostly Nintendo fanboys willing to counterclaim with shear "US Marine assault" brute force.

Vita is at least playing it safe. It has the lure of a Smarphone or Tablet, without being the same kind and has the draw for core gamers yearning to play games with an extra thumbstick backed by touch controls. So far everything implemented for PS Vita has been positive and has the potential of outselling the older PSP model.

3DS is practically suffering from an identity crisis, and at the same time stuck in the middle of a fork road, with Smartphones blocking the left and Tablets blocking the right. 3DS has nowhere to go except go reverse.

The Nintendo 3DS is the successor to the DS, but also another version of the DS that is upgraded. If you truly think the 3DS is what the DSI is to the Light then you're simply wrong. It's Nintendo's next generation handheld (you could say current generation now)

It's what Gameboy advanced was to Gameboy Color or PS3 is to PS2. This is fact and to believe otherwise you'd have to be ignorant.

I think it's just another version of the DS, all it has extra is 3D and some online features, the DSi was bigger leap from the DSL than the 3DS is from the DSi, I don't know why people consider it a brand new system. I think most consumers also see at as a revision of the DS as the sales have been mediocre so far.StealthMonkey4

3DS is the successor. And even if it wasn't, it'd still be better than most consoles (since it plays DS games). There's no question it's the DS's successor though.

Was the Super Nintendo just a regular NES save for the more powerful hardware? Was the PS2 the same for the PSone save for the more powerful hardware and DVD playback?
