Alan Wake or FFX, although one has a good ending the other not so much.

Final Fantas 6...I was so young but it actually got me to sit down for so long and I couldn't wait to play through it. I've still yet to play a game as engrossing for me.

I think the best way to answer this question is by picking the game that one has spent the most amount of time over the least number of days playing. Okami is my answer. I destroyed the game in 36 hours over a 72 hour period. Three days straight of 12-hour gaming sessions. I may remember other games' stories more... but I don't think that is the right way to answer this. Being "engrossed" means devoting yourself to it, no matter if it is stupendous or not, or even memorable or not. I barely remember most of Okami's story (except Oki, he was the greatest part of that game)... but no game has ever come close to reeling me in for that amount of dedicated time. -- Though, there is also Metal Gear Solid and Syphon Filter from way back in the day (about 1999?) that I devoted a lot of my non-gaming "play time" to. I even wrote a short story that ripped off Syphon Filter in grade 7.

Final Fantasy VIII was probably the first game story wise to have me hooked. I started playing it right before we left for a holiday. Decided to take the PS1 with me because of it & spent most the holiday playing it. Recently, Braid had me spending quite a lot of time trying to figure it out after finishing it. It's not really one of those games that makes you want to find out what happens next, because you don't think there is much to the story at first. It's one of those "Wait.. What?" kind of stories. I thought it was done really well.

I'm probably going to get crucified for this, but Final Fantasy XIII wasn't half bad story wise. It was just told very poorly in game. That's all I can think of off the top of my head. I have plenty of story focused games waiting to be played also.

Edit: Oh. Em. Gee. How could I forget NIER? From the very start of the game you're left with questions & it had me scratching my head. I wanted to find out what was going on. Great game.

Thefirst Shenmue. As soon as I got to the ending I borrowed the second from my friend and blew through it and then the fun was over.

This gen the first Mass Effect, or Deadly Premonition. Mass Effect I went through at a steady pace, but with Deadly Premonition I dredged through the boring first chapter over the course oftwo weeks. After the story started to pick up a bit, around chapter 2, I finished theother 4 chapterswithin the next week.

The world of Assassin's Creed 2 (and by extention, Brotherhood) has the potential to keep me engrossed and attached to my dualshock for many hours at a time. Some people say the story is far to convoluded, I say go play Metal Gear Solid 4 as your first entry in the series.

Modern Warfare 2 was by far the most engrossing, and amazing story that a video game has ever had. The Infamous no Russian mission, to where the US gets invaded, and Ghost, and all that, i mean wow, Mario games are so generic and are truly re-hashed, it's just Mario saving a Princess time after time, with upgraded graphics....not even if you compared it to MW2, and lol Zela is pretty much the same thing.

1. Majora's Mask. The game world is incredibly alive, and feels very authentic and emotional. All of the subtleties of it keeps me coming back to it to this day.

2. I would say Knights in the Nightmare, or Silent Hill Shattered Memories. Both had amazing stories told in great ways, but they were obviously very different.

The Metal Gear saga story is unchallenged in the video game world. Mass Effect comes in a close second but Metal Gear gave us Solid Snake and Ocelot with an amazing story.

As a whole stories, I'll go with Mass Effect. For smaller individual chapters the Ace Attorney series (adventure games, after all). Besides Apollo Justice. That game doesn't exist  (as good as it was).

First- Halo. Love the story, and read the books as well. Made the games that much richer for me. Second-Batman AA really pulled me in, as well as Mass Effect, Uncharted, Alan Wake.

tales of symphonia and gta4, and a little bit of the world ends with you. Three of the few games i ever finished, GTA being the game i forced myself to finish because i actually liked the characters and stories while absolutely being bored by the gameplay.

Tales of Symphonia had one of the best plot twists ever in gaming.
