What do you think is truly the biggest flop of all time?

I would like to nominate ET for the Atari 2600 on this one. The game single handedly pushed people over the edge in an already crap filled market. It was almost on the day it was concieved that it killed gaming right then and there. Luckily for our sake Nintendo made us believe again.

Also another notable title would be Superman 64. This game built up an insane amount of hype. It even came a super huge box that just made it look so cool. We quickly learned that outside of Star Fox and Pilot Wings, there's only so much flying through rings a man can take.

*Edited* I almost forgot. Star Fox Dino Planet. I waited for this game for 3 years. In the year that the game was delayed, the only "new" feature they came up with was making characters fuzzy. It was an action game with gameplay stripped right from Ocarina of Time (horrible idea). It took them 3 years to steal Ocarina of Time's gameplay, make Fox fuzzy, and completely strip away what made Star Fox fun. Automatic healing also made for quite a button mashing experience. This game literately killed most people's beliefs in Rare, and most importantly, it killed Nintendo's.

I'll go for the obvious and say The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. People had hyped this to be the greatest game of all time, perfect 10, and much more. Everyone (including myself) was very sure that it would score no less than AAA.But it didn't, and this shock was felt throughout the whole of GameSpot. There was outrage. People called GameSpot biased, they insulted the reviewer, etc. I don't know one other game that sparked such uproar upon GameSpot when it flopped.

I guess our terms of flop our considerably different. Gamespot pretty much gave LoZ:TP the worst rating of all the critic websites. The average website score is 9.4 and the average reader is 9.4. And seriously, 8.8 a flop? You've got to be kidding me. When a game can be called a flop by the consensus of people, then it is a flop. Zelda? Hardly.

A game is considered a flop here on GameSpot when GameSpot doesn't score it according to what is was hyped to score. Twilight Princess was hyped to score AAA, but it did not. That is considered a flop.

And GameSpot did not score it the lowest; seven other sources scored Twilight Princess lower than GameSpot. One source even gave it an A score.

Well, there's opinions outside of GS, and those opinions speak otherwise.

Zelda TP is not a flop, it only scored 0.2 away from the hyped AAA. Hardly 'the biggest flop' and besides gamespot is the odd sheep out, and most happen to disagree with their review (it WAS a poor review....read it sometime.)

I would have to say ET on ATARI, it destroyed a company and plunged gaming industry into a huge crisis.

You don't have to agree with GameSpot, but that's how it's done System Wars. We're on GameSpot, we use GameSpot scores.

And there were seven other sources that scored Twilight Princess lower than GameSpot. GameSpot was actually the highest out of the scores lower than AAA status, and one gave it less than AA.

GameSpot not scoring according to a game's official hype is considered a flop. Again, you don't have to agree with the score. But you have to live with it because that's how System Wars operates. You don't have to agree with that either, but it's how things work.

I WILL USE CAPITALS. THE THREAD STARTER EVEN SPECIFIED ET FOR ATARI, IMPLYING THAT WE ARE DISCUSSING THE BIGGEST FLOPS IN THE HISTORY OF THE GAMING INDUSTRY, GAMESPOT IS NOT THE GAMING INDUSTRY, GAMESPOT DIDN'T EXIST WHEN ET FLOPPED AND ALMOST DESTROYED GAMING. KAPISH!?!?!?!?!?

Must I limit my IQ to the standard 65 when discussing far encompassing topics on gamespot forums? Please don't limit our options by implying that ET and ATARI and the 80's never existed because gamespot wasn't around back then.

True. But again, that's how System Wars works. People like to disregard GameSpot's score now, but right when the review went up nobody thought of that. It was all insults and complaints and simple outrage. GameSpot's score may not be the only one that matters to you (which is a good thing, as it shows you have some sense), but to System Wars it's the only one that matters.

Ok, how about you utilize one of the other 5000 definitions, specifically the one the thread starer is using in this thread, the all encompassing one that includes all games from all consoles since the dawn of gaming, because your definition essentially handicaps this thread and limits us to discussing games that have been hyped on system wars, and ignoring the other 20 years of gaming before gamespot system wars and fanbabies existed..

I could, but I'm not going to. I'm not going to change what I say to satisfy you.

But if I chose to change the definition, my answer would still be Twilight Princess. I was very disappointed with it; it didn't have the same impact on me that the other games did. It didn't feel like a fresh experience. So, if I were to use defintion 47 of 5000, it's the biggest flop of all time because it did not live up to my expectations and didn't impress me as much as the other games in the series.

But I'm using definition 23 of 5000, which is the System Wars definition I have repeated several times.

Rofl, fanbabies. I can't believe you said that. I was a fanbaby for the SNES over the Genesis back in the day. That didn't stop me from enjoying the Genesis though. I have since extinct my gamism ways.

If I were to change my definition to suit you, my answer would still be Twilight Princess for the reasons I stated. And I'm limiting this to games I have played as well, so I can't say E.T. like you did since I haven't played it (and likely never will unless it is used to torture information out of me.) I have played Superman 64, but Iwon't say that because it was a long time ago that I played it. My expectations for the game were not high, so I wasn't disappointed. I expected the worst, and that was what I got. Like it or not, my answer is still Twilight Princess since it disappointed me greatly.

You don't have to have played the game. We are discussing the biggest gaming dissapointments in gaming history as defined by popular opinion, not a single opinion, you are entitled to your opinion but it's making you sound close minded that's all. TP is a highly successfull and critically accalimed title that has sold millions, and you classify it as a flop due to 1 opinion, your own. As somebody elsesaid, think outside the square, go play ET.

The swordplay didn't feel very authentic, either. It didn't totally emulate your movements, but mapped it to the nearest set movement the game had. Those slashes across the screen were rather stupid as well. I haven't ever cut someone with a sword, but I think a cut is supposed to appear and there will be blood, not a orange slash in my field of vision. Even with Red Steel's PG-13 approach there could have at least been cuts and minimal blood.

If it's truly that awful, what's my incentive?

And yes, I do classify it as a flop due to my own opinion. I don't have to agree with everyone else. I say what I think and if you don't agree, that's too bad. I'm not going to change. There was no specific definition given for "flop" at the beginning of the thread.

There was a definition and it said 'of all time'. It's making you look really bad thats all. I have nothing against you or your opinion, I'm just surprised you chose a highly successful critically acclaimed game as the 'biggest flop in gaming history'. I could say Half-Life is the biggest flop because I didn't like it that much, but I'd look stupid, so I'm steering away from baseless opinion and resorting to logic.

Fair enough, I won't hold it against you. An opinion is an opinion.

There was a definition and it said 'of all time'. It's making you look really bad thats all. I have nothing against you or your opinion, I'm just surprised you chose a highly successful critically acclaimed game as the 'biggest flop in gaming history'. I could say Half-Life is the biggest flop because I didn't like it that much, but I'd look stupid, so I'm steering away from baseless opinion and resorting to logic.Gangans

Yes, and I think Twilight Princess is the biggest flop of all time because it was the biggest disappointment to me. I didn't choose Twilight Princess because it was highly acclaimed. I didn't choose it because I want to be "different". That's the way things are. It disappointed me, I'm going against the grain, there's no big deal.

And you're wrong on your analogy. I didn't choose Twilight Princess because I "didn't like it that much". I like the game, it just doesn't stack up to the other Zeldas in my opinion.

And "critical acclaim" is also an opinion. Those reviews are just opinions, albeit more publicized ones. Opinions make upmost of the world. I choose to go by my own opinion, you choose to go by public opinion. Done.

As far as "cult-Flops" go, "Musashi Samurai Legends" was. It was the suposed sequel/spinoff of Brave Fencer Musashi, a little known underground classic and hit. The game was horrible, not as a sequel, but on it's own, let alone compared to the orginal. The game was such an insult to the orginal.

So for cult-flops, Samurai Legends wins.

I almost forgot.

ET has to be up there, David Sheff's Game Over says they actually ordered more cartridges of this than there were systems to play it on.

More modern day, after all the hype and excitement, ridiculous claims of its brilliance only to be followed up by a piss poor peice of software look no further than Killzone.

I rather liked Star FoxAdventures on its own. I had fun with it, but as a Star Fox game it was awful. When playing it, you have to try to forget it's a Star Fox game.

Were going by different definitions of the term 'flop of all time', you're using a more localised definition, I'm using a very general and all encompassing one. Fair enough, Case closed.
