He's not talking about Gamespot though..

I'm pretty sure Gamespot wasn't around during the Atari 2600 days.

Chalk up a win for the PS3 ;).Stonin

Yeah, any console that sells 4+ million units before it's a year old HAS to be considered a flop. You lose.

You just can't beat E.T. in terms of floppage. Single-handedly killing an industry just doesn't happen any more. Other old-school flops that come to mind are the TRON games, that killed the Intellivision system. These days flops just aren't as dramatic.

I'd have to say "State of Emergency" for PS2, in my mind, was the biggest flop. The game was hyped, the game was well reviewed, but when I finally got my hands on it, I couldn't stand the game.

That's just ridiculous. The game was not hyped "AAAA and the greatest game ever", a couple of fakeboys here don't count. The game was officially hyped AAA, it got high AA. Gee, what a gigantic flop. I would suggest Killzone as first and perhaps Red Steel as second. Killzone was hyped AAA, and as the "Halo Killer", it got 6.9, not even A. Red Steel was hyped AA, got 5.5, far from A. Those two are what you call huge flops, not TP's .2 flop.

What do you think is truly the biggest flop of all time?

I would like to nominate ET for the Atari 2600 on this one. The game single handedly pushed people over the edge in an already crap filled market. It was almost on the day it was concieved that it killed gaming right then and there. Luckily for our sake Nintendo made us believe again.

Also another notable title would be Superman 64. This game built up an insane amount of hype. It even came a super huge box that just made it look so cool. We quickly learned that outside of Star Fox and Pilot Wings, there's only so much flying through rings a man can take.

*Edited* I almost forgot. Star Fox Dino Planet. I waited for this game for 3 years. In the year that the game was delayed, the only "new" feature they came up with was making characters fuzzy. It was an action game with gameplay stripped right from Ocarina of Time (horrible idea). It took them 3 years to steal Ocarina of Time's gameplay, make Fox fuzzy, and completely strip away what made Star Fox fun. Automatic healing also made for quite a button mashing experience. This game literately killed most people's beliefs in Rare, and most importantly, it killed Nintendo's.-Wheels-

ET for the Atari has a bad rap. Sure, the game sucked, but I think history and legend and jokes from casual gaming mags have turned it into a cliche. I am old enough to remember playing ET. I had the game although I'm not sure who bought it. I don't recall there being a huge public outcry or gnashing of teeth over it...mainly because there was no internet and gaming mags were pretty much unheard of for the most part.

I also wanted to point out that Star Fox Dino Planet was originally meant to be just Dino Planet. The game was already in the works and had been written about in gaming mags and Nintendo, for some reason, thought it would be a good idea to toss Fox in the game and call it a new Star Fox title. Probably just a quick money grab.

I think the biggest flop of all time would be Fable. Fable was hyped through the roof as being the single game that would revolutionize how we look at both RPGs and games in general. A living, breathing world where your every action affected the world around you. In the end it was a mediocre action/RPG that felt like half the game was chopped off to save money. Not the worst game bya long shot, but expectation is everything.

Zelda flopped according to GS sw rules were not basing if it flopped on other gamesites or user reviews were basing it off of what the reviwer gave it. It was hyped AAA GOTY and it didnt get neither therefore it FLOPPED. just get over it. But IMO killzone was the biggest flop it didnt even come close to what cows hyped it

And I think hype should include what MOST gamers think...not just a handful of fanboys. I have a Wii and twilight princess and I think GS gave it the most fair and accurate score of any site. It's an amazing game but certianly not AAA. And anyone who honestly believed a GC game that was ported to the Wii should be AAA on the Wii was either extremely deluded or simply ignorant. I don't think anybody outside of Nintendo fanboys hyped TP. It's not like the industry was hyping it, or gaming mags and websites were obsessing over it.

It's not a japaanese game. It was a PC game made by John Romero. It took forever to come out and was hyped to no end. "John Romero is going to kick your ass"- was the big marketing phrase. The game was incredibly awful.

I do agree about Hour of Victory. I went back and watched the live demo the producer gave at GS. It was funny to see him try to hide the obviously bad AI. Then when they asked him to keep playing while he answered questions, he intentionally pushed a switch in the level to trigger a cut scene and stop the gameplay.

If you look at the interviews it's funny too. When they are asked what makes their game stand out, he starts going in depth on gondalas and how they offer great in depth play. And also how there will be "lots of action and lots of flying bodies," over and over.

Dai Katana or Ultima Ascension.sonicare

I think I'll agree on Daikatana. Romero was surrounded by some serious rock-star hype when that game was announced. Big claims, delays, soap opera situations at Ion Storm, and finally...UTTER FLOPPAGE!!!

OMG, Ultima Ascension. No computer on the planet could run the game at over 2 frames per second when it was released!(yes, a little exaggeration thrown in for effect :) ).

Killzone was hyped Halo Killer so it would of had to get a 9.8 or higher to Kill Halo and it got a 6.9 so I say that is the biggest Flop in System Wars history.

Thats easy. The biggest flop is a tie between Killzone and Motorstorm. Motorstorm was hyped AAA, it got an A rating. Killzone was hyped AAA, it did not even get an "A" rating...

I guess our terms of flop our considerably different. Gamespot pretty much gave LoZ:TP the worst rating of all the critic websites. The average website score is 9.4 and the average reader is 9.4. And seriously, 8.8 a flop? You've got to be kidding me. When a game can be called a flop by the consensus of people, then it is a flop. Zelda? Hardly.

A game is considered a flop here on GameSpot when GameSpot doesn't score it according to what is was hyped to score. Twilight Princess was hyped to score AAA, but it did not. That is considered a flop.

And GameSpot did not score it the lowest; seven other sources scored Twilight Princess lower than GameSpot. One source even gave it an A score.

And how many of those scorces are well know and/or have good credibility?

Anyways I'd say Mario sunshine. TP only missed AAA by two points. Mario sunshine missed it bya whole .10 points.

Even going without the System Wars definition and going by my own expectations, my answer is still Twilight Princess. My opinion being different than yours does not make me close-minded.

It might help if you beat the game . Y'know...go beyond the lakebed temple before you pass final judgment on it.

What?

I said Killzone or the PSP for the biggest flop.

Killzone-because it was hyped AAA and the Halo killer,it got less then A and lemmings are still laughing at the Halo killer comment.( halo killer)

PSP-because it was hyped to be better then the DS and GBA and completely obliterate Nintendo from the handheld market,it achieved none of these things I mentioned.
