Is it Motion Controllers or 3D gaming? I am going to say 3D right now because motion controllers can be used without having to buy all new expensive equipment. I think at E3 you see a lot of motion games but only a few 3D games.

People have called motion controllers a gimmick. I don't think they are but some say they are. I think 3D gaming is though right now.

Achievements. Really, it's just marketing. You just think they're for fun.

They want you to get 'attached' to your account by having all these achievements you 'earned' and don't want to lose. Thus, you keep coming back to the system, buying more games, because you're 'invested' in your account.

It's along the same lines as 'Give away the razor, charge out the ass for the blades'.

MW2 achievements only involves playing through SP and co-op on veteran. Quite short if you have functioning opposable thumbs (and your partner).

Stories in games are a huge gimmick. When it comes to actual gameplay, the most fun games were made in the 80's in 90's. Since the video game industry was unable to top itself in gameplay they found ways to keep people interested by putting stories into games. I guess they figured that way the gaming industry can survive as long as the movie industry has. Millions of movies have been made. They all involve the same activity, sitting in a chair staring at a screen. So the video game industry is like hey, people like doing the same activity over and over while a story unfolds in front of their eyeballs. So we can get away with creating the same game over and over with a different story each time and people will keep forking over the cash!

Yeah, Achievements. Especially when the game hands them out for stuff you had to do anyway.

I think they add to the game rather than take anything away. I play a game for fun not anything to Achieve from it so I dont' care about them but if someone else does good for them. I guess you can call it a gimmick but it doesn't cost anything to play on Steam to get Achievements.

3D. Maybe it is the future of home entertainment, but that future sure as hell doesn't involve buying pairs of $100+ glasses on top of a $2000+ 1080p TV.

Yeah it's going to cost a lot. If there are any four player 3D games that is going to be very expensive.

a lot of the time this is true but i can honestly say some of the best fun times ive had playing games have been recent games with good co op experiences and next to no story; castle crashers and the deniable ops stuff in sc:c.

I second this notion. I honestly think they're a gimmick. Not a horrible gimmick mind you, it gives me something to extend the game and all, but it's really just a pointless gimmick.

Achievements can sometimes be fun though (depending on the game). Its not like MS punishes people for having low achievements scores, so I don't see how anybody could have a problem with them :)

Its only a gimmick if its used like a gimmick so be optimistic and think that 3D and motion control will be used well and its more likely to encourage developers to try and use it properly

3D gaming is a huge gimmick because 3D movies are a huge gimmick. Its pointless and its stupid, they have to sacrafice console power for it, and HD isn't even standard yet, now they went people to dish out $6000 for ANOTHER TV and $250 PER PAIR OF GLASSES? Really? For a family of 5 thats another $1250 just to be able to watch the damn TV. 3D is a gimmick, it should have died with the blue/red 3D glasses fad.

It's not moving forward. It's been attempted before and failed. I think 3D gaming is worst than motion controls and hope it fails again.

achievements.... they would mean alot more if they were actually hard to get, but most of them are simple and some you get for doing the very basics of a game....

imo, achievements should be something you get for completing difficult or long term objectives (seriously, and seriously 2.0 from gears comes to mind)

Its ultimately using the exact same idea, 2 copies of the image, etc etc. Think about it, the only thing that makes 3D better now is that CGI has gone so far, so things in 3D and CGI look fine, but 3D itself is still a gimmick.

same idea, but the technology has changed... shutter glasses or stereoscopic display instead of blue/red glasses

3d as a technology really didnt get any attention or real improvement for a long time, they are barely starting to concentrate on it again... i think the tech will improve quickly now

I don't see what they can do in terms of improvements, but no one can really know whats going to happen in the future. I can argue more about it when 3D fails a few years from now. :o

[QUOTE="110million"] Its ultimately using the exact same idea, 2 copies of the image, etc etc. Think about it, the only thing that makes 3D better now is that CGI has gone so far, so things in 3D and CGI look fine, but 3D itself is still a gimmick. 110million

same idea, but the technology has changed... shutter glasses or stereoscopic display instead of blue/red glasses

just off the top of my head: how about viewing 3d without using glasses?

I did see a demo of some 3D hologram technology. It needs a lot of work, but there was possibility.

Well it was just one color (green), but it was an early prototype and there were no glasses :P. There were some big companies putting support behind it too.

How is #D gaming a gimmick? There are barely any games that even support it.

Right now there aren't but next year Sony is going to push it really hard to sell their 3D tv sets.

lol he tried to make a capitol 3
