This is absolutley amazing.
The virtual reality experience you've always dreamed of for the price of the VR glasses, which would cost between 20 to 40 bucks

eww wii. SW doesn't want wii news.ff7isnumbaoneMaybe you should try watching the video... it's one of the coolest and most practical uses of Virtual Reality Ive ever seen.
btw... the Majority of console gamers are Wii owners as its currently destroying its competition in the console war and has a larger user base.

You mean ps2 gamers. This is awesome. I really hope Nintendo or other developers are going to pick up on this.Can-o-MarkIts only a matter of time... but otherwise its inevitable. It's just too practical, cost effective, and well implemented to ignore. This thing will make mega bucks.

No games. Excluding SMG, TP, RE4 wii edition. Youtube ain't working for me at the moment so could someone describe it, might be interesting, might be like the Virtual Boy.
most likely Nintendo already thought of this. Their reason as to y its not on the Wii is yet to be answered.Tjeremiah1988Honestly I dont think they have. This guy works for a University and would most likely have patented his idea (to avoid copyright infringement) before going public with it.
This video is actually a pitch to 3rd party developers (or better yet Nintendo) to use his idea for upcoming Wii titles (they could package their games with the headset...it would cost them and consumers next to nothing to utilize the technology).

I dont know if he can patent it since he is using Nintendo's own technology, but I agree I dont think Nintendo has thought about using the technology in this way. If they had they would have at the very least implemented it in games like warioware, and showed it off at E3 with WiFit board.

I dont even think he can patent it. Considering he made it with the Wii-remote and the sensorbar. Apart from some software, nothing else. He just thought of a way to use the Wii-remote and sensorbar in a different way.
EDIT: Never mind, person above me posted the exact same thing.

Good point. That is amazing, in many many ways.
I hope someone in the industry is paying attention. When he was ducking and weaving, I had thoughts of how amazing an FPS could be with that technology.
There are so many things I wuld like to say now. I'm just gonna list some of them.
1. There is more power to that little white box than we knew of.
2. I really suspect we are looking at future Nintendo plans. I'm might actually have been right when I said virtual reality earlier on.
3. Shows that Virtual Boy was ahead of it's time.
4. AAAAAMAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAZIIINNNGGGGGG
5. Gaming is changing and fast. The best graphics doesn't impress that much anymore.
[QUOTE="pro-nathan-07"]4D !!8)geniusshawncand Sony said they would be the first ones to do it with the PS3... lol.
But that's not what Sony meant by 4D..
What you just saw is 3d.
4D means time, and the reason Sony called it 4D was a play on words, because they were talking about things in the game, evolving through time..
im a ps3 fan yet that was really cool and i would lyk to see nintendo add this virtual feature on to thier games but as for system wars this does not end system wars as thier r always fanboys (which im not) which r too ingnorant to see the good sides of other consoles. in my opinion system wars is pointless as we play games for fun not too start off arguements8)
i don't know why the tc felt it was necessary to create yet another thread about this video, but oh well.
one more time. this isn't new technology, this isn't wii-specific technology, and no, nintendo doesn't hold any patents regarding this technology.
what the person in the video is doing is nearly identical to the way game developers do motion capture for animation. he is simply using the infrared camera in the wii controler as an input device.
before the wii fanboys start jumping up and down, i'd like to point out that you can do the exact same thing with the ps2, ps3 or xbox 360 camera because they are all capable of recording infrared in addition to full visible spectrum. all you need to complete the setup would be the safety glasses swapped out for the infrared leds. one advantage to this setup is that the cameras are usb so you would not need to go out and buy a bluetooth adapter for your pc.
If so then the war never begun :) PCgamers have been using accesories like that (in couple dozens of games mind you) for many years now, only that TrackIR is much more responsive and precise.AdrianWerner...not to mention expensive. This technology on the Wii would be so great because it would be cheap and bring it to the mainsteam.

If you want to do it cheaply then all you need is internet camera and couple LEDs. There is a freetrack software that lets you use homemade alternative in all TrackIR supported games (on their site they have step by step manuals to construct it). this way it will cost as much as what this guy did with wiimote. The only diffrence is that you will be able to actualy use it on dozens of games.
exactly adrian, i tried to say the same thing, but people don't want to believe that this is old technology that has been done before. another thing people want to ignore is the fact that this technology relies on you having to move your head side-to-side and quite a distance, in order to achieve the illusion.
most games that i know of do not require you to physically move several feet to the left or right while playing. that is why this technology is very limited for practical use.
the best 3d technology for vr currently is still the lcd shutter glasses. you don't need to move your head, multiple people can experience the 3d effect simultaneously, and the effect is much more pronounced because it is based on true 3d stereo vision, unlike the parallax 3d that this technology uses.
don't mean to burst anyone's bubble. i'm just as excited for new 3d technologies as you all are. virtual boy ftw.

How are the PS2, PS3 and 360 capable of recording infrared?

That's a good idea....really, but no homemade PC concoction will ever catch on with the mainsteam. Everybody and their grandma is buying a Wii right now, this could really open the door for Virtual Reality going mainsteam... this video is easily the most feasible (for publisers and consumers) method of virtual reality ever inspired. If somebody were to pull this off on 360 or PS3 which is doubtful (using the eyetoy technology would be much more difficult to implement, more expensive, and generally less feasible or effective), it would be useless because essentially you'd still be using 2D gamepads in a fully 3 dimensional visual field, whereas this technology goes hand in hand with the 3D space of the Wiimote control.before the wii fanboys start jumping up and down, i'd like to point out that you can do the exact same thing with the ps2, ps3 or xbox 360 camera because they are all capable of recording infrared in addition to full visible spectrum. all you need to complete the setup would be the safety glasses swapped out for the infrared leds. one advantage to this setup is that the cameras are usb so you would not need to go out and buy a bluetooth adapter for your pc.

I don't want to burst your bubble but the only thing that was used from Nintendo was the sensor bar and the controller. It had nothing to do with the Wii itself. He used a program on his laptop to do this.

and therein lies Nintendo's genius... perhaps not that they invented motion controls... but they were first company with balls big enough to mass produce a console based around it.Please Log In to post.
