It's a valid argument because it goes much deeper than presentation. People are just looking at this at its cover and not bothering to think about the message. All of these games are warfare, all in first person, all have mostly the same weapons, all have modern to high modern tech, all have the exact same controls, all have the same damage system and hud, all have the same AI, all have the same mission structure, all have the same visual style, all have online multi-player with all v all and team deathmatch...

These three games are not the whole list either. Just about every single shooter this whole gen fits this description. This gen has been dominated by developers making one game, and only one game, over and over and over. Thank god for bioware and nintendo this gen.

same weapons?

not all of them

You telling me Killzone has no assault rifles, shotguns, sniper rifles, or handguns?

I dont know of any guns called "assault rifles, shotguns, sniper rifles and handguns" those are just different catergories of firearms. And if you actually played these games you would know that the gameplay of KZ and CoD are much different.

yeah it does, and what is wrong with that?

Nothing.:) So I don't understand why anyone would complain about familiar weapons being intergrated in these games. It's like complaining about having an anti air or a projectile option in all 2D fighters.

They pretty much cover all aspects of gameplaystyl and situations so it's understandable as to why these firearms (and the likes) are presented in the first place. They are standard to most shooters and other genres with shooting elements as in the case of Ratchet and clank, etc.

Don't blame the developers, though

100% the consumers fault.

You play one, you've played them all.

Parasomniac

Blame the silly people that buy these games. I have no need for them, as indeed - I've played one, and don't need to play another.

KHAndAnime

So true. All of these FPSs feel the same. At first I honestly thought they were all the same game. Because I've played a good amount of Modern Warfare with friends, I'm good at pretty much any FPS I play because they're all the same game.

And this is why I am stopping buying shooters like these. Just played the Medal of Honor beta a week ago and I really COULD NOT tell much difference other then the maps between it and bad company 2.

Shooters do need a new formula but they wont change until the people demand change.

Consoles are going through what the PC FPS scene went through for quite a while about a decade ago...first its Quake and its Quake clones...and then its Counterstrike and its imitators. The same happened with the RTS scene with C&C and Starcraft. Oh, don't forget what Diablo did to the action RPG hack & slash scene. For a number of years, the only genres thriving(stagnating rather) was RTS, FPS and Action RPGs. A lot of genres literally died (simulators, turn-based strategy etc). Right now, the PC is going mad with MMOs popping left right centre. But the PC is going through a rebirth with a lot of forgotten genres coming up with newer titles again, thanks to a very strong revival of the Indie scene. Consoles will go through similar phase as well.

I laugh at people that fail to see the variety in this genre.

Oh cool, this same picture again which has been posted probably over a million times since E3. This new discovery definitely deserved it's own thread..

I know right shooters have the most overused gameplay ever.I mean in racing cars can go faster,in rpg games you get to play as a different character in a different story, puzzle games you get to use your brain more the longer you play. All genres lack variety shooters are just more popular than the others.

There have been a lot of creative (first person) shooters over the years, with some of them being ignored by the big audience (Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath anyone?). But they're still there, they just don't get the same media attention as the major franchises. And it's the process of competing franchises wanting to outdo eachother in terms of sales what essentially kills the drive to be creative, because creativity is risky. This is why developersprefer towalk down familiar paths and add their own gimmicks to distinguish themselves positevely, while not taking major risks by trying to to turn the genre upsidedown. This is the logical consequence of consumers' behaviour (your money is a voting bill, after all), soit's always gonna happen to some extent. As soon as people smell money, they'll walk down the paved road of polished genericalness to go and get it.

That's not to say that there aren't tons and tons of shooters out there that give a different twist to the genre, and I think the sheer variety in FPS games makes it still one of the most universally enjoyable genres by the more serious gamers, as there are always bound to be at least a few games that suit your taste. Any of theside effects generated by commerce and the popularity of the genre will just have to be ignored, and that is perfectly possible.

[QUOTE="FIipMode"]I see the resemblance between COD and Medal of Honor but why is Killzone 3 there?stvee101

Check the gun and the depressingly-drab brown and grey colour palette used.

Honestly I think that pic displays the lack of imagination in maintstream shooters nowadays very well.

the problem with the picture is its picking on COD4 and its me too spin off's. Its not like these are the only FPS games out there, halo/crysis/bioshock ftw

I don't understand why getting 3 similar pics and sticking them together makes a point. Sure we have a hell of a lot of similar FPS games but its not a bad thing. People who don't like FPS games are pissed but this thing goes in streaks. Something else will get hot soon. Remember all the Platformers?

Except Killzone and Call of Duty are completely different from each other. I could easily say every RPG game is the same, because each RPG shares the same basic combat traits: Melee, Magic, Range, and Stealth. However, that would be incorect, just like people hating on shooters calling them all the same is completely incorect.
