29.99 is a hell of a lot for a cartridge. i know the companies would pay less to format games on them but still its definitely not as cheap as discs. the company that physically puts the game info. on a disc pays like maybe 2 cents per disc if that even. They'd have waaaaay more expenses.

With all the topics bouncing around about blu-ray winning and HD-DVD losing I have not sen anyone talk about what really matters in Disk formats.....

LOADING....

So fr the bigger disk storage we have the longer loading time. and I hear people speaking about the END OF BLU-RAY being ANOTHER DISK FORMAT.

The solid state cartridges will return, I have seen 8gb flash drives going for $29, and I can see 100gb drives for low cost not to far off.

Seeing how solid state drives have no loading time, I believe cartridges will return to be the main format of storing games (supposing they aren't down-loadable content)

Even if they are, a HDD will also have loading time, and I believe Hard drives will become SSD

The Disk era is coming to an end.

Cartridges is not the solution..

Install for all games is.. Im afraid.

An 8 gig falsh drive is $29...but you are paying for an EMPTY medium. An empty CD or DVD by comparison costs only pennies.

What you fail to take into account is that, even with games costing $50 - $60, some developers still lose money. If you were to put those games onto a 8 gig flash drive, you would have to pay $79 - $89 for a game. More if the game requires more than 8 gig of storage space.

That is why we left carts in the first place. It had nothing to do with space; they just made games cost too much.

One more thing. It also costs a lot less to mass-press a CD, DVD, or BD. Once the master is made, it can be fitted into the press so that it takes less than a second to press the data onto the media layer as the disc is being manufactured. One simple and quick mechanical process. I don't know if manufacturing ROM chips of any type could possibly be any easier, simpler, or less expensive.

Not unless you can manufacture a ROM cartridge as cheaply as you can press a BD.

I cant believe you actually quoted $30 for an 8Gig drive as a good thing. As if developers/publishes will pay that degree of money to publish their games. :? You realise discs costs pennies, right?

SSDs are way too xpensive for gamming consoles, 8 gigs for 30 bucks is rip off. productiono costs gotta be low, 1 bluray disc cost 15 cents to produce. and another thing, flash drives and ssd aare different. 8 gb flash is different.. ssd may replace hdd like 2 generations from now but it is certenly too expensive winthin the next half decade.

Which made third party support virtually non-existant.

It's possible. I mean one only needs to look at the DS to see that carts are still viable. It will be years though until they can reach the storage and cheapness to modern games.

by then blu-ray will become a penny a disk to produce. By then holographic disk will come from know where. and loading times is determined how well the devs make the game, not the format.
