It's always funny when something like this comes out and people think it will work just because of their discussions with other tech geeks or other game enthusiasts on the internet. What they FAIL to realize is that MOST gamers are NOT hardcore. MOST gamers do NOT have 5mbps internet connections (and many don't even HAVE the internet, or still have dial up). This will be a niche thing at best in the US. Had it come out 10 years down the road it may have become mainstream but there simply are too many people without capable connections on top of all the people who would prefer hard copies. On top of all that this comes around when a lot of ISPs are considering throttling back internet usage caps and charging extra for bandwidth. Again I say this is niche at best but could very possibly fail in an epic fashion.

As I said in another thread, if they ever did figure this out it would be a threat to console gaming; not PC gaming.

People like PC gaming because the perks it offers over console gaming, this has even less freedoms and choices than console gaming.

AnnoyedDragon

it can be a possible threat to the pc hardware industry though

if im not mistaken, you can have a crummy computer with a nice internet connection and still be able to play all the graphic hungry games that are provided through this service nicely, right?

if it does catch on(which i think the chances are certainly higher than a lot of people think as of now due to the support it has starting off from devs/publishers) and more and more current gen games go on it, it can certainly have an affect on pc hardware sales

but it would no doubt hit the console industry a lot harder

but we'll see

I don't hink this will succeed at first even if it eventually might catch on, but lets say it does, console gaming could very well die or change with companies like MS moving to provide similar competing services.

But I'm not so sure if PC gaming would die, people still need pc so the platform will be around, and at the same time there are plenty of hardcore gamers who wouldn't be satisfied with 720p resolutions, not to mention all those small indie devs who put out niche titles, and how'bout mmorpg players who only play one or two games, are they gonna pay subscription in addition to monthly fees, how are they gonna work out the servers for massive online games, how'bout all the old games that people already own and play, how'bout modding etc. Nothing can kill the PC, as long as personal computers are being made there will be some sort of games for them. And technically it's still PC gaming even if you're only using your pc to stream the game.

The thing about this is it's like a console as a service.

PC gamers pay more because they feel the perks of the platform are worth the price, that there is a cheaper console like experience out there doesn't change it doesn't offer what draws people to PC gaming,

Should this service work it would be limited to 720p and offer zero modability and customisability, that doesn't sound very appealing to me. The most this would do for me is providing rentables to try, but I'd buy and run my games using the traditional methods.

playing a game with nothing more than a internet connection? I can't even begin to imagine the restrictions they put on games for it to be playable.

This would be successful if everyone had fiber-optic connections...:|

PC will never die.

Where console gaming *will* die, right? :|

Useless for mods. I'll stick to my PC, thanks. Plus, I'd hope they could stream all that data and graphical processing of Crysis with TOD/Natural Mod with Ultra High settings and 32xAA/AF at a resolution of 1680x1050+ to hundreds if not thousands of computers.

that's the thing. Simply saying 480p or 720p is not saying much, as to me it seems like a major downgrade and yet with my current connection I would barely be able to handle 720p. Which brings up another question? What is the amount of private used pc's that have speeds high enough to support this service?

Indeed. Plus who the heck plays games at 720p on the PC? I can understand consoles, becuase that's the main standard for games at the moment, but on the PC? LOL. I'm pretty sure that both Microsoft & Sony will be bringing out true 1080p on their next gen systems. Than what will happen with OnLive?

Great idea outside the US. Funny how we created the internet, but are one of the slowest countries. Fios should be country wide by now. America sucks.nmaharg

that's because Japan actually heavily funds their science and technology unlike the US. Blame the republicans.

Sounds sorta like the phantom.

I don't like the sound of the whole streaming thing. I like to actually have the games I pay for.

vashkey
there is actually another console that is like that. i guess this gen will be a lot of phantom like consoles. i think this won't go well. once some people find out they have to slow of a connection then they will be disappointed to it. upcoming years there are going to be internet caps on the upload and download speeds. there will be a lot of fees if people are going to be buying this.
