Consoles have been on decline for over a decade, with console ownership at the height in 2007 and has been declining ever since, this largely due to Mobile, where consumers are moving away from Consoles to Mobile gaming. This is the market that Microsoft along with Nintendo is tapping into, a market that is wanting to play anywhere they want.
Despite revenue increasing in the Console market, the overall Console market is no longer growing. The revenue is coming from exisiting users and NOT new users. The lack of growth in new users to the Console market perfectly explains why Microsoft and Nintendo is moving away from solely traditional consoles.
So sad to see console wars ending. The industry changing for the worse imo but maybe I'm just being an old man who can't deal with it passing me by. Battle royale, f2p, moba, etc...these games never caught my attention. I tried to get into Apex Legends and I was just bored out of my mind. When I look back, even when I was a teenager, I never really cared for multiplayer games I spent more time single player experience and that's all I play today.
Phil Spencer seems to think not but the market will ultimately decide and given Xbox Play Anywhere existence, I wouldn't be surprised if it was. MS don't seem to care about having strict exclusives anymore and having Xbox Play Anywhere makes sense for MS in the matter of speaking.
I'm just speculating, I think Xbox Scarlet will be the final traditional console MS will have and from their, it's Xbox Play Anywhere from mobile, Windows 10, & even on Nintendo Switch. Sad to see consoles are declining, but at least everyone seems to move on to PC gaming which makes sense.
I can understand ms stance on the play anywhere I just don't want them to go completely out of the hardware business. The Lockhart is interesting me next generation it might be the gen that finally kills off physical media.
Sony and Nintendo will never stop making hardware. MS has given up after the beating they took this gen, but I fully expect another company will step up and take their place.
Nintendo and Sony seems to be still into making consol and they sell them quite good. They also don't try to be the same as a computer and offer exclusivity.
Hardware power is becoming progressively unnecessary. Both Sony and MS have jumped on this boat. Ninty will probably catch up about 20 years too late...
This is some amazingly sad spin and damage control for the incoming news that Xbox is dead.
Weren't lemmings JUST rabidly hyping and promoting XB1X for playing RDR2 on that specific model on MS's system? Suddenly news of MS putting their hardware on the back burner to gvie games and services to competitors and lems FLIP-FLOP!
Non-gaming MS shill arguments change as SOON as MS's newest gimmick or marketing advantage shifts.
Literally, why are you guys even still in SYSTEM wars?
Your relevancy in this forum community, going by the argument presented in this thread, is now completely irrelevant!
GTFOH with this desperate MS shill "consoles are on the decline" propaganda. Both PS4 and Switch have set RECORD BREAKING console sales figures this generation. Hell Switch set NEW record sales JUST this past December, LMFAO!

Strong holiday season pushes Nintendo Switch to record-breaking sales for 2018
MS is the only one tapping out of the console market because they aren't able to compete by delivering higher quality games than their competition.
Hate competition between SYSTEMS? Hate the idea of pushing SYSTEM sales by producing superior games? Cool, find another website to post your teary eyed "but services" love letter to.
MS shill arguments on this board now IRRELEVANT that they've abandoned the idea of making arguments based SYSTEMS.
Maybe you guys need to request a new forum called "services wars" and take this sad garbage there. Your desperate and FALSE narrative falls on death ears here.
When it only applies to xbox consoles because of the shitty caliber of low quality games MS offers?
You're angry at the wrong guy buddy. If you're going to lash out at anyone, it should be Phil "The Ax Man" Spence. He finally Ax'ed the xbox brand.
The only, "suckers for punishment" here are the people who bought the original disappointing Xbox One/S and then blindly bought Xbox One X thinking that would make everything better.
How's that for a loud FACTUAL reply to this desperate MS fanboy thread?
Now you corporate MS shills can run along and create yourselves a "services wars" forum somewhere for you and all those displaced xbox fans out there to migrate to.
Soo....Microsoft has the only console that doesn’t sell like hot cakes, and suddenly the reasoning is the console industry is in decline?? Lol......yeah ok

Yeah this thread makes no sense. The PS4 and Switch are 2 of the most successful consoles of all time.
Bragging about hardware hardware hardware hyping Xbox One X as the 2nd coming. Now, in the span of a few short months all you guys are on the services bandwagon because MS are abandoning hardware so ya'll have switched to "consoles are on the decline".
I don't know that they are really moving away from traditional consoles, or at least I haven't heard anything of the sort.
PSNow makes PS games playable from PC, and going by recent investments, Sony probably have plans to expand that kind of service. Why wasn't GG called on SW when that launched?
It's good to see consolites also acknowledging it now but when I said it before that console gaming is on decline I was attacked for it multiple times. It's a no-brainer when you can easily see that gen 8 console sales are trailing behind gen 6 numbers let alone gen 7 numbers.

Stop making idiotic posts.

Diminishing returns on consoles hardware has reach it's limits from the looks of it. If any, I'm just not gonna bother next-gen consoles (besides Nintendo cause they get a pass here) and from the way things are going, graphical leaps has finally stop on consoles. PC just keeps evolving and Ray-tracing is proof of this.
lol wut? That graph makes no sense... today I was seeing this video that pointed how graphs mess with our perception of something and this thread is proof of it
So... all that graph tells me is that console ownership is decreasing BECAUSE internet users? wut? Again, correlation =/= causation. Its idiocy. the PS4 has been smashing records in sales year by year and the switch has aswell. Thats a fact not some idiotic graph that mashes two different, unrelated things, together and hopes to make a point...
this is the video I was talking about for those interested
Lol ? maybe for the xbox brand console ownership went down, but for Sony and Nintendo it sure went way up . I mean 90+ mill for Sony and Nintendo already about to over take Xb1 sales numbers makes MS sound like they are smoking crac....

Wow, that's quite the 180 you took Dav. It's only been a couple of months since you were saying something else with reCloud and Quad. Here are the quotes and the link to the entire conversation:

LOL, no new company will enter into 'Console space' as the the model Nintendo introduces especially any company that is also trying to get a market share in cloud computing. It's been a matter of time when even current console companies will try to venture beyond the current model of consoles. Console will increasingly become a relic of the past.

@pc_rocks: Lol, you seriously think consoles are dying? Bwahahahaha, oh god pc fanboys are always good for a laugh.
We been hearing this for years and consoles still and always will have a place. PC gaming isn't for everyone and consoles fill in the void for those who don't want nothing to do with PC gaming.
PC & Consoles have their place.

The entire thread along with links, numbers is there for everyone to see. Try to dispute that and I'll quote the posts again showing the same thing when Quad hiding behind Kenshiro tried to dispute it.
People say dumb stuff and it makes me wonder " did they read what they wrote?". You can't say consoles has reached the point of diminishing returns and then tout PC gaming immediately after. Console hardware is not only derived from PCs but are a generation behind. If anything, the diminished returns has hit PC and for quite sometime but consoles still has a lot of room for improvements on the CPU and storage. Ray tracing is a perfect example of diminishing returns. The average user cannot tell the difference when it's on and it currently requires screen inspectionsl for it to be appreciated while tanking performance.

For once I agree with you.
That was a dumb point for @-DaVillain- to try to make, but my counter to that fact is something that you might not agree with.
The reason that his point was dumb is because we are still seeing development focused around creating games for 1.3/ 1.8TF systems with Jaguar CPUs. Every game created up until the start of next gen has to run within the limitations of these current generation consoles.
Next generation (something you hate to acknowledge) will move the reference point for developing games around current gen limitations.
The new reference point for next gen would be a minimum of around 6TF (lockheart?) with next gen Zen + CPU. This jump from base development around 1.8TF/jaguar CPU systems will be absolutely HUGE!
People own 1080TI 11TF systems now, but the fact remains that no one has ever actually seen what 10+TF developed game looks like. Saying we've reached diminishing returns when no one has even seen what the current available hardware is even capable of is silly. Devs are simply capping high end PC capability behind additional performance to maximize user base. The actual capability of High end PCs are hardly being utilized at all. Next gen is when we will see what can be achieved.
Is console gaming really down, or did things fall by the wayside due to stinkers like the Wii U and Xbox One putting an anchor on the averages? Sony's doing fine, and Nintendo had to drop the zero and release the Switch. If MS is planning to leave the hardware market, it's due to spending billions fighting a battle of attrition that got them no real gains.
@NathanDrakeSwag: Given up consoles by announcing two new consoles?
One (the cheaper model) diskless to remove ownership rights and further push rental services and the other will be overpriced for dumb consumers to waste money like the people who purchased XB1X to play inferior games like Crackdown 3 in 4k60fps.
Yes, MS's focuse is pushing Game Pass and giving away all their games to ANY platform they can get it on removing any requirement to have xbox hardware which will make their excuse for them phasing out their consoles easier to justify.
This isn't even a theory at this point. Phil Spencer: "I want xbox to be the netflix of gaming". It's about when MS decideds to pull the plug from underneath next gen adopters.
@boxrekt: So we're in agreement then.... Ms can hardly be giving up consoles if they're launching two new varients, can they?
Because that was the point I was referring to, not the pros and cons of digital ownership.
The days of queuing at midnight to pick up a disc are over, and disc based gaming will go the same way as music....but suggesting that Ms are heading out of the console business based on them offering a superior version of psnow is nonsense.
New consoles are soooooooo connected. Firmware upgrades, and network subscriptions and loot boxes. The next consoles will need to be like programming a space station to top the current gen.
