Sounds like they fixed what made Oblivion cheap and nasty... The combat... Block, attack... Target dies... It was stupidly easy.JohnF111

Arkane is part of the Zenimax family, I'm sure they have something to say regarding combat. Also John Carmack helped with the shadow rendering.

"When engaging in dialogue, it no longer zooms in on the person you're speaking to, they can walk around and do things while talking to you, occasionally glancing at you." this is exactly what I wanted. It annoyed me in oblivion.

All sounds good. I really hope the dungeons are all varied since that was my biggest gripe with oblivion. Also this is small but I'd love to see less completely obvious traps. If you're going to put them in don't have the string dangling above a large obvious pressure plate.

Sounds like they certainly plan on taking it in the right direction. Hopefully it all works out, I remember everyone thought Oblivion would be amazing and while it was pretty damn good it still disappointed a lot of people. I dunno how I feel about that radiant quest thing though. I mean if all you do is hunt vampires and all you get is vampire hunting quests then I think it would get dull eventually.

In every game with an open world I wish there were more more MORE random encounters of anything. And if the game could progress like the actual world. If an item is in a store on day one it's going to be in that store on day 1,000. It's going to stay there until you buy it. Like there is no one else in the game. Things only happen when you make them happen.

Every time they release a new TES game, I seem to dislike it more and more.

I always believed Bethesda had something against specialized classes. As they always failed to balance them correctly; while making the jack of all trades players more and more overpowered. Pure mages in particular always seemed to take a hit, with a battlemage consistently being more powerful than a pure mage. I see they have discarded the image of trying to balance things; and taken out all the class roles in the game. Now there is just one class, the DragonBorn, which is customizable to player taste.

Unarmoured in Morrowind was broken, as it didn't perform armour roles once hit; as they were dependant on the player wearing armour for them to be performed. They took the skill out completely in Oblivion and tried to balance it out by adding negatives to armour, negatives that were almost completely negated mid to end game; and leaving unarmoured players underpowered. Now they said they are restricting backpedaling, which was one of the few maneuvers unarmoured characters could perform to try to stay alive.

Bethesda really hates robed/clothed characters don't they? Going as far as showing a robed mage on the arena poster in Oblivion, but preventing anyone not wearing armour from doing the quest line.

I've loved every Elder Scrolls game so far and this one will be no different. I just love the freedom and the expanse. I hope Skyrim is gigantic.

Wasn't Daggerfall half in Skyrim? Half Skyrim half Hammerfell? I can't remember.

Daggerfall was restricted to the Illiac Bay, part High Rock and part Hammerfell. In Arena you could explore the entire continent of Tamriel, including Skyrim.

Really need to know the author of the story, that's the most important detail. Hopefully they got a proper author in and not just a game designer.

Sounds like they mean business, as expected. This is the next Elder Scrolls and there is no way that they are going to skimp out on such a series. It has been five years and I am positive that it will be well worth the wait.

"18 skills in total, 3 less than Oblivion." So did they just remove three completely or combine them with other skills. Like I heard they're getting rid of Mysticism, does that mean that the spells that absorb, reflect, and dispel magic, move objects, sense life, and bind souls are gone completely, or have they been put under a new category? If removed completely I wonder what they're reason is. AAllxxjjnn

They will most likelly combine some of the skills like Acrobatics + Athletics or Mercantile + Speechcraft.

so many of those tweaks are very welcome. mostly anything wouldve been better than oblivion's leveling/class system, the combat needed improvements, some cosmetic surgery for the people after oblivion would my eyes very happy, and more character creation options are always good (a fantasy game without beards is a mortal sin. fact.)

the questing system and animations (and some of the other technical bragging, for that matter) sound great, but they are things i want to see in motion before i buy into them.

also, any bets on how long max von sydow's character stays in the game? im tossed between a quick tutorial entrance and exit like patrick stewart or 2 early story missions.

Sounds good. I loved fallout 3 but hated oblivion, mostly due to the npcs, combat, and levelling system which was too complicated for its own good. If they make it more like fallout 3 then consider me interested.

Bad Things:

  • 18 skills in total, 3 less than Oblivion. (I assume there will be one "Weapon" skill now for everything you hold in your hand and hit people with...LMAO)
  • Fast Travel is still in. (probably free again, paid travel like Morrowind keeps people from ignoring your pretty world)
  • There are 10 races, most likely the same 10 that were in Oblivion, however the only two confirmed ones so far are Dark Elf and Nord. (this obviously means they replaced some of them, probably including Argonian which is one of my favorite races)

Good Things (if true):

  • The NPC's are much more dynamic, for example, if you drop a weapon inside a city, a young boy may pick it up, run after you, and ask if you dropped it.Another example of the same event is two men find the weapon and then fight over who gets to keep it.(this will probably be very broken, but broken Elder Scrolls can be funny)
  • The Oblivion styIe enemy leveling & loot leveling is out, the one in Skyrim is more in the styIe of Fallout 3, which in turn is more in the styIe of Morrowind.
  • The faces in the new game look much, much better.
  • The finishing moves are all unique to the creature you are fighting as well as the weapon you are using. (see above)
  • The game takes place 200 years after Oblivion. (guess it's not a "direct sequel")
  • Dungeons are said to be a lot more unique in Skyrim, should be less repetitive.

Overall, not bad. I'm impressed that there was only one thing in there that sounded dumbed down and a lot of good improvements. If they're not lying about even half of the good stuff, it will be a solid step up from Oblivion, which is enough for me. :)

BTW, the RPGCodex thread on this is predictably amusing.

I wanted to say GotY, but I forgot about ME2, DA2, UC3 & possibly The Last Guardian. Whatever game gets GotY this year is going to be one hell of a game. Also, the Dragon is known as World Eater.

Sweet.

[QUOTE="PAL360"]Bethesda has hired many more voice actors to keep the NPC dialogue fresh. The Oblivion kind of enemy leveling & loot leveling is out, the one in Skyrim is more like the one in Fallout 3, which in turn is more like in Morrowind. It seems they have cut out picking a clas in the beginning, citing their reasons as "it's stupid to force to player to predict the way they will play a game they've never played before". Combat has been made more tactical and engaging, Bethesda has put a lot of time into making the weapons feel real in your hands. The new engine enables much more fluid running water, dynamic shadows and more vibrant trees, with each individual branch and leaf being more 'alive'. The faces in the new game look much, much better. Dungeons are said to be a lot more unique in Skyrim, should be less repetetive. Landscapes are also said to be more unique, it's not just going to be snow, as previously thought. There will be rivers, forests and such.

A lot of these are really exciting.

Character customization as a whole has been improved and you can now edit body features

Me having a sexy female character confirmed. :P I NEVER hype games but I have a strong desire to hype this one..

You're very pessimistic! In particular the skills thing. Reducing the amount of skills makes it a better game imo. I would say it even makes it a deeper game. That sounds contradictory, but shallow rpgs often clog up your stats with many, many skills (if you don't believe me just look at sports games, which have the longest lists of skills you can get in a game). If they take the game seriously with real and purposeful design, then you strive for that chess ideal - easy to learn, difficult to master

Game seems even more streamlined than Oblivion was. I can already tell I won't like this, with the emphasis being on the combat and not on roleplaying elements. But it's pretty much what I expected from Bethesda. More generated crap too, which is a shame.

But anyways this is sounding great, already a day one buy even though I hate Oblivion. Oblivion combat was horrible, thats the only thing I want improved.

Oh, I'm being optimistic here. I gave them the benefit of the doubt even though I know they could be lying about everything.

I agree with you that more complication doesn't equal more rewarding gameplay, but I'm not super confident that they're going to simplify things gracefully. It's easy for designers to go crazy with the streamlining and lose sight of what an RPG really is, and what their audience (including consolites) is capable of understanding.

I wouldn't say you've given them the benefit of the doubt when the 3 things you say you dislike, you dislike based on assumptions you've made about them with no backing.

Yeah, I want to get hyped, I did spend a lot of time on heavily modded oblivion and a good amount in morrowind and daggerfall, but it seems like they get worse and more streamlined, less deep with every title. I'm just hoping they can fix the combat and make 3rd person camera actually viable like they claim, I would be okay with the other negatives then, NEVER liked Elder Scrolls combat at all..

I hope your character isn't just an empty shell like in Oblivion. I never really felt like I had relationships with the characters around me. It felt more like I was someone who knew the main characters and was watching the story, rather than being the actual central figure of the plot. Also, it would be cool if it was like Fable where you can "marry" an NPC.

Mostly good news. Mostly, I have a few questions/thoughts about some stuff.

18 skills in total, 3 less than Oblivion.Lame, but if they revamp the skills completely it could be ok. Grouping short and long blades together in Oblivion was a good idea, others not so much. Hopefully the started from scratch and bring back stuff like throwing knives and spears, just grouped in categories they can happily fit in.

Your character is the last known remaining Dragonborn, a dragon hunter. Who starts in a prison :D

Some new creatures include mountain giants, frost giants, mammoths and sabretoothed tigers. The giants are interesting and truly suggest Bethesda was serious about a new combat engine. Dear God I hope I won't be killing giants by just slicing their ankles for 20 minutes...

When engaging in dialogue, it no longer zooms in on the person you're speaking to, they can walk around and do things while talking to you, occasionally glancing at you. Finally, something that happened in 2004's Vampire is going to happen again in 2011!

The Oblivion kind of enemy leveling & loot leveling is out, the one in Skyrim is more like the one in Fallout 3, which in turn is more like in Morrowind. More like Morrowind, sure. What's more important is that it's less like Oblivion's.

Fast Travel is still in. I hope Bethesda has a "hardcore" mode in this like Obsidian did with New Vegas. One new feature could be no fast travel, except for Silt Striders. They probably won't be in this is, but it would make the game more immersive for those that desire it.

It seems they have cut out picking a clas in the beginning, citing their reasons as "it's stupid to force to player to predict the way they will play a game they've never played before". Stupid. A clas isn't who you are going to become, it's what you are. Clas creation was always really fun to make and gave your character a history. Maybe I want to play a Chef who's a master at Destruction and uses fireballs to cook. Now what are you? Random prisoner #1? Eh, dislike.

Every time you level, you recieve a boost in health, and you can select whether to boost your Magicka or Fatigue.
You also select a Perk like in Fallout3. Not sure how I feel about this, but it will be nice to define your character with perks.

Enchantment is a new skill. We know Mysticism was cut, Enchatement is back in? What other skill will Magic lose? 3 are gone, it's usually one gone in each category. I'm guessing blunt skill will be gone and generic weaponry skill for strength, and mercantile will be mixed with speechcraft for stealth.

There are kids in the game, not known if they are killable. They won't be. I'll put money on it. Nice that they're there though, might make it seem less robotic this time.

There are 10 races, most likely the same 10 that were in Oblivion, however the only two confirmed ones so far are Dark Elf and Nord. Considering the entire world of The Elder Scrolls is based on 10 provinces each belonging to a different race, it would be weird to have any absent. Although they may pull something like "It's too cold for Argonians to live and after the Oblivion gates some Dremora escaped to start a new life here"... I hope not.

Each race is according to Bethesda going to look a lot more distinct. Looks aren't the problem. Bring back distinct voices (Dark Elves are supposed to have raspy voices, that's just their lore) and things like that. I want to have difficulty befriending characters because they dislike my race or something. It makes the world expansive and interesting.

The finishing moves are all unique to the creature you are fighting as well as the weapon you are using. Interesting fact. I'm going to go ahead and assume these moves aren't overly fancy though. Which is good.

There are 85 spells in total. Custom spells? There better be...

Character customization as a whole has been improved and you can now edit body features Finally. I can save the world as a fat ass wood elf.

Known returning creatures are zombies, skeletons, wolves, horses, elk. No Hungers? We're stuck with generic **** again?

Some more new ones are trolls and giant spiders. Oh yup.Giant spiders. Yeah that's original. Trolls were in Bloodmoon and Oblivion btw, they're not new.

Dungeons are said to be a lot more unique in Skyrim, should be less repetetive. We shall see. There's only so much you can do with dungeons. It's why D&D has way more dragons and less dungeons now.

Mostly good news. Mostly, I have a few questions/thoughts about some stuff.

[QUOTE="PAL360"]

Now what are you? Random prisoner #1? Eh, dislike.

IndianaPwns39

But your random prisoner #1 who everyone thinks is just a nobody but ends up being this grand hero. This way you'll be less likely to waste points on something that you regret later (something I do all to often:evil: )It seems like a fantastic improvement to me. I can't believe theres people that would actually rather have it the other way. every time I start a game I'm like "god damnit ! let me try the damn game before choosing my skills!

For those like me who cant wait for this game, heres the info that came in the latest Game Informer:

18 skills in total, 3 less than Oblivion.

Five 'massive' cities.

Your character is the last known remaining Dragonborn, a dragon hunter.

Your mentor, Esbern, is a Nord member of the Blades, possibly the last one left, he is voiced by Max Von Sydow, who did the narration for the teaser.

Some new creatures include mountain giants, frost giants, mammoths and sabretoothed tigers.

You can do more stuff in cities, for example, craft weapons, chop wood and even cook.

Dragons will exist as hostile enemies, and there will be plenty of fights with them, not just the boss battles.

Bethesda has hired many more voice actors to keep the NPC dialogue fresh.

When engaging in dialogue, it no longer zooms in on the person you're speaking to, they can walk around and do things while talking to you, occasionally glancing at you.

The NPC's are much more dynamic, for example, if you drop a weapon inside a city, a young boy may pick it up, run after you, and ask if you dropped it.
Another example of the same event is two men find the weapon and then fight over who gets to keep it.

The Oblivion kind of enemy leveling & loot leveling is out, the one in Skyrim is more like the one in Fallout 3, which in turn is more like in Morrowind.

Fast Travel is still in.

Bow & Arrow is now more powerful, but slower to use.

It seems they have cut out picking a clas in the beginning, citing their reasons as "it's stupid to force to player to predict the way they will play a game they've never played before".

There is no level cap, however after level 50, it takes a lot longer to gain experience.

Every time you level, you recieve a boost in health, and you can select whether to boost your Magicka or Fatigue.
You also select a Perk like in Fallout3.

Improved 3rd person view.

You can dual wield with almost any type of combination like a dagger in your left hand, a sword in the other, a dagger in each hand, a mace in one hand, fireball in the other.

Combat has been made more tactical and engaging, Bethesda has put a lot of time into making the weapons feel real in your hands.

They've tried to kill off 'cheap' combat tactics such as backpedaling, when walking backwards you're not fast enough to keep your distance from your opponent and at the same time attack him.

The new Radiant Story feature will tailor the sidequests found in the world to your kind of play.
For example, if you've gone around killing a lot of vampires, a woman may approach you in a town, asking you to clear out a cave of Vampires.
The game will then look at your playing history, see which caves you have entired, then select a cave you haven't visited for the quest.

Enchantment is a new skill.

There are kids in the game, not known if they are killable.

There are 10 races, most likely the same 10 that were in Oblivion, however the only two confirmed ones so far are Dark Elf and Nord.

You can choose to remove the HUD while you play. (Health, Magicka, Fatigue meter, equipped weapon & selected magic, compass (not confirmed to be in) etc.

There is civil war in Skyrim, it is just starting as the game begins.

The new engine enables much more fluid running water, dynamic shadows and more vibrant trees, with each individual branch and leaf being more 'alive'.

The faces in the new game look much, much better.

Your character, the dragon hunter / Dragonborn, was blessed by the Gods, as were the other Dragonborns, to be able to fight on equal terms with dragons.
As such, you have special spells.

The Godlike dragon Alduin is known as the World-Eater, and it is feared that he is coming to end the world in Skyrim.

Each race is according to Bethesda going to look a lot more distinct.

Shields can now be used as a weapon, pushing your opponent back.

Weapons have finishing moves, which are most likely unlocked as your progress in the weapons skill, think Fable 3, so progressing your blade skill will unlock finishing moves for long swords, etc.

The finishing moves are all unique to the creature you are fighting as well as the weapon you are using.

There are 85 spells in total.

The Draw Distance has been improved with the new engine.

Snow can be seen falling dynamically, not just as a basic texture on the ground.

The game takes place 200 years after Oblivion.

Beards & facial hair is in.

Character customization as a whole has been improved and you can now edit body features

Known returning creatures are zombies, skeletons, wolves, horses, elk.

Some more new ones are trolls and giant spiders.

You can now sprint at the cost of your fatigue.

Dungeons are said to be a lot more unique in Skyrim, should be less repetetive.

Landscapes are also said to be more unique, it's not just going to be snow, as previously thought.

There will be rivers, forests and such.

Sounds great. I really liked Oblivion despite it's annoyances, and this seems like a great step up from it.
