Poll The Elder Scrolls vs. Final Fantasy (77 votes)

The Elder Scrolls Series 40%
Final Fantasy series 57%

Now, pick which you would tolerate more if you don't like either, as when you sit down and plug in your machine/pc to your TV with a dual analog controller in hand, you have a lot of rpgs to choose from, but the biggest Wrpg and Jrpg franchise currently, in that regard is The Elder scrolls franchise and Final Fantasy. The two biggest rpg franchises of the above, right now.

Elder Scrolls:

Arena

Daggerfall

Battlespire

Redguard

Morrowind

Oblivion

Skyrim

Online

Final Fantasy:

1-XIV

Both of these franchises has spanned many spin-offs as well, and each has sold millions upon millions. Which do you prefer?

Final Fantasy edges it for me mainly because I liked quite a few of the games. Elder Scrolls... I loved Morrowind but Oblivion was average and Skyrim is one of the most boring games I have EVER played. I couldn't even be bothered to mod it.

@lostrib: the thread. It asked for what we, being SW users obviously vote for. Which is a "tick the appropriate box" way of saying this is what I prefer. So maybe a few of us add a little fresh ground pepper to make it interesting? Some here have stated ES bores them to sleep and the combat is awful. Big deal.

Not really. In almost every Japan vs. West poll here in the last few months, the West has been leading. This poll is about FF vs. TES, not Japan vs. West.

@cainetao11: I seriously don't know why you are comparing this to real life.

It's fine if you prefer ES combat, people like different shit. But I think it's pretty stupid to pick one because one is a little more realistic than the other. You obviously disagree, no biggie

@lostrib: I did comment on the game. Spiky haired, emo crap was the characterization and turn based combat was the gameplay. My opinion. Same as ES combat bores others or is shit

Final Fantasy definitely. There are 4-5 FF games that are better than the ES games.

Final Fantasy, I enjoy multiple entries in that franchise.

Elder Scrolls: I don't like Daggerfall, I sort of admire Morrowind but that game's gameplay FUCKING SUCKS, I hate Oblivion, didn't play Skyrim.

If this was blackisle stuff vs Final Fantasy, I'd go with the Black Isle stuff.

Final Fantasy, there are a ton of unique games to choose from so even if I don't like a particular game there is another game in the series that I will like. FF Tactics, Dissidia, Theatre Rhythm, and Type-0 all mix things up and offer something besides the usual turn-based set battles of main FF installments. FFXIV is also amazing and has a ton of content to keep me busy all while having a great story.

I feel like I enjoy Final Fantasy Tactics more than the main series. Elder Scrolls is derpy and buggy, but I find it highly enjoyable.

Final Fantasy by a ridiculous margin. I don't care for either series these days, but at least FF had some great entries.

FFs 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 12. All these games range from decent to great. I haven't even played the MMOs, but from what I understand FF11 was pretty good and FF14 is great.

TES games are just a chore.

@-God- said:

TES easily.

But FF will win because more weaboos on the internet and this site. (look at all those skinny nerds with anime sig/avatars)

I'm about as far from weaboo as you can be. I think I've watched one anime in my life if Ninja Scroll counts. The only things I dig from Japan are video games and that's largely due to Japanese games having a strong focus on gameplay.

Beyond that, FF hasn't always been some full on anime nonsense. FFVII, FFVIII and FFXIII are the only ones that really push that style hard.

@cainetao11 said:

Bottom line for me is turn based, spiky haired, emo crap is FF

Turn based sure, I'll give you that. And if it's not your thing then you won't like it. For me, I just like good gameplay. Doesn't matter if it's turn based, action, or whatever. Thing is, FF actually has decent gameplay at times. TES gameplay is about as bottom of the barrel as it gets. I really wish they would address that shit at some point.

Spiky haired emo crap though? Yeah man, that's an incredibly narrow view on the series. If that's all it was then I would never have touched the shit. That's actually why I do avoid most JRPGs. Thing is, FF only has 3 games that match that description.

I'm not all like "western RPG >>>>>>>>>>>>> JRPG", like some people, but I do greatly prefer Elder Scrolls over Final Fantasy. Never been a fan of FF. I've tried FF4 SNES and the DS remake of 6. I have zero interest in the 3D ones. I find FF games story-heavy, and the story really sucks in those games. Not a good combo.

@ConanTheStoner: Fair enough. I certainly haven't played every FF in order to try and find out.

As for ES game play, I have no problem with it. The way it is, is part of the charm to me. I know going in I am not getting smooth, fluid combat. I know going into COD I am not getting Ninja Gaiden like game play also.

Morrowind was the best by far of all of the 3D Elder Scrolls games. It made it so if your character sucks at picking locks, you aren't getting through that locked door. If your character sucks at melee, you aren't going to even hit that soldier over there. It didn't have the stupid leveling AI system where all of your enemies start out weak enough for your crappy character to dispatch easily and end up strong enough to challenge your leveled up character. It started out so that everything but the little critters in the woods will kill you and you had to actually hone a few skills to advance in the game.

Oblivion and Skyrim give you a new quest every time you talk to somebody, complete with a map marker. About half of the skills you can learn in both games are completely worthless. If you have an axe-wielding orc in heavy armor, you can go ahead and lead the thieve's guild, no problem. Here, have a few scrolls to make you invisible.

The newer Final Fantasy games are terrible, too, but they are better than Oblivion/Skyrim.

Final Fantasy has tactics so that.

Also, combat in TES

  • No Skill at using 2h weapons. Still massacres the entire capital with one. Then proceeds slaying a dragon using that weapon.
  • Low on health? Pause the game and quaff potions.
  • Next to no enemy variety
  • All spells are banal
  • Destruction magic doesnt scale

Final Fantasy. Elder scrolls is absolute garbage in terms of gameplay.

I wonder why people keep saying this. This whole thing about all Jrpgs being grindfests is just false myth. It has been an eternity since a Jrpg that required acutal grinding to beat it came out.

Yeah, all good man. I mean I'll stand by my statement. I think TES games have some shit combat lol. But it's whatever, I know that's not the main appeal of those games. They have some stellar hiking mechanics. :]

As for the FF stuff though, I can get why you would think that. If you've seen anything FF related over the past decade, then you've probably seen spikey haired emo crap. I can't fault you for it, that is the modern face of the series and I don't see it changing any time soon. It's one of the many reasons why I don't care for the series anymore.

Didn't mean to jump your nuts about it, I just happened to see your post right after responding to our friendly neighborhood deity and went into "**** that noise!" mode.

But yes, believe it or not, FF wasn't always a diarrhea soap opera j-pop fashion show.

Can't say really. Only TES games I liked were Morrowind and Oblivion, I really disliked Skyrim, mechanically the game improved, however the story and quests, the meat of any TES game, we're substantially lacking.

As for Final Fantasy, never been a fan over the years. Attempted Final Fantasy 7 numerous times and gave up out of boredom. To my surprise I actually enjoyed both XIII and XIII-2, never did try Lightning Returns though. I think FFXIII's biggest sin with gamers, even if they refuse to admit it, is it lost PS3 exclusivity. If it had maintained it, it probably would be more well received with PS gamers, just like they were gleaming in excitement for years over FFXV (or FFvsXIII then) when they knew nothing about it, except it would be PS3 exclusive...

Anyhow, Final Fantasy as of late hasn't disappointed me, whereas Skyrim has, and I wonder if Bethesda has it in them to make classical RPGs (in terms of quests), or will they be try to make worlds of auto-generated content, as was case in Skyrim, and I've reason to suspect in next Fallout.

Then again, at least Bethesda is making games, there's still no end in sight for XV, they also did that expensive XV demo bundled with a late port of Type-0, which I straight up despise (the sales tactic, not the game). And FFVII is being remade, which apparently the games director didn't know he was doing.

Hmm, I may have to rethink my ranking of these two.

I think he meant shooting, not boxing. Circle-strafing might make sense in a fist-fight, but it makes no sense in a real shoot-out.

Chess and Go are entirely turn-based, yet they're still great games (even after thousands of years), and still more strategic than most real-time video games today.

Circle strafing in a fist fight, as portrayed by TES, doesn't make much sense, either. The AI just can't compensate for it.

as a series i really enjoy both , not too keen on the leveling of enemies in the last two es games, morrowind was perfection for its time. i grew up playing final fantasy my favorite is 12 , the games based around 13 were too linear and casul. i have high hopes for 15 though the duscae demo with fft0 is really slick. series wise i suppose i like TES more , i like ff12 a tad more than morrowind tho.both are great series.excited about the new star ocean thats coming i loved the last one

Come to think of it, circle strafing wouldn't make any sense in a real sword fight either. Anyway, as far as fist-fights go, proper Muhammad Ali style circle-strafing might be asking for too much from TES.

You don't have to use an anime sig/avatar to be a jrpg weaboo.

Don't be so upset you skinnies.

But we're not

so once again, what does a persons physique have to do with this thread?

Please lostrib, stop feeding the troll.

In other news, I like them both personally. FF for the epic stories and music, ES for its openness. I simply can't choose either/or.

ES for gameplay and exploration + freedom. FF for art, music, story, legacy, greater number of quality games in main series + side games like Tactics, CCFF7 , and overall legacy. I actually enjoy ES more but in a weird way I have to go with FF, unless we talk individual games

I love both series, I'm not even gonna pretend one series is better than the other cause both have some amazing games.

@mems_1224: You can always count on TES lore to put you straight to sleep.
