I don't see the fps genre dying anytime soon. There is a reasonwhy other genres died.
Fighting game genre - was at it's golden age during the 2D era, namely SNES era. Street Fighter and King of Fighters was leading the genre. Ever since the transition to 3D, these genre leaders found no place in the market, especially among fans. So the only franchises left were the ones who started off in 3D, ie. Virtua Fighter, Tekken & Soul Calibur. Mortal Kombat managed to scrape through. But without Street Fighter, King of Fighters or any of the Marvel/Capcom spinoffs, the whole genre almost died if not died off completely.
RTS genre - was once the most popular genre for pc primarily because the keyboard and mouse worked well with the genre. Now that developers are focusing their efforts on consoles, this genre is facing a problem. It is particularly difficult to micro manage with a game controller. So, apart from the original pioneers of RTS games like Westwood (now EA) and Blizzard, any other developer would not sought to develop an RTS game due to it's unpopularity on consoles. As a result, this genre is also dying if not almost dead.
RPG, Action, FPS - the prevailing genres of the current era, primarily because the these games work well on consoles and pc in terms of controls. And honestly, i don't see these genres dying any time soon.
