[QUOTE="ragek1ll589"]FPS's are too widely popular for the entire genre to suddenly die. Nintendo_Ownes7
While I don't think FPS's will die. But The same could be said about SHMUPs, Platformers, Fighters, and Beat 'em Ups. Because those genres were widely popular when they were in their prime just like how FPS's are now. Those genres aren't dead but they are not as popular as they used to be.

fighters are still popular and more popular then jrpgs. Soul calibur, street fighter, smash brothers, tekken still all sell well. and there are alot of fighting games coming out or have came out recently. 2009 is the year the fighting game genre will make a comeback.

If you think these are the days of uninspired clones, then clearly you don't remember Operation: Body Count, or Corridor 7, or any of the other Doom knock-offs.

It definitely wont die, but it will probably run out of steam in a few years. Anyone who says otherwise is being a little ignorant. Shooters popularity wont last forever.

The transition to 3D brought new life into the genre, so I think a new innovation is in order if we want to see the genre go in a new direction.

Platformers died because most people think platformers are kiddy. People are insecure and will play a shooter to make them seem more manly.

Shooters aren't dying anytime soon. Especially if this new MLG Themed Dr. Pepper works out the way it's planned, competitive gaming will get a huge boost and when people see you can make money off playing video games and having fun (despite what you kids think, most of the pros don't drain themselves into playing these games all day, they actually do other things) at the same time, it beats working at McDonald's hating your job.

Man I'm REALLY getting sick and tired of this 'all FPSs are the same' BS. Please tell me how Call Of Duty 4, Fallout 3 and Mirror's Edge are the same? And FPSs aren't dying anytime soon. Crytek is already working on Crysis 2 and Mirror's Edge is getting a sequel and it didn't even sell that well. If you don't like a genre then don't Please don't talk anymore of this FPS BS.
actually FPS genre is very important to gaming history. Imagine if doom, goldeneye 007, perfect dark, half-life, and halo never came out. pssshhh and you want to see this awesome genre dead...ppppfffttttReaperV7
You can say that again. It's sad to not like such a great genre.
I don't see happening, howerver I want more jrpgs and platformers :xGiancar
Me too. FFXIII is not getting here fast enough. lol

I've played modern FPS games but Timesplitters Future Perfect has been the one I'm still enjoying to this day. Until Timesplitter 4 releases, that'll be the only FPS I really need imo.

Call of Duty 4 is the only FPS in that list. Fallout 3 is an RPG with *some* FPS elements (which you may not use at all if you don't want to), and Mirror's Edge isn't even about shooting at all, it's about free running. Just because it's in First Person doesn't mean it's a FPS.

Why are people getting the idea that i hate FPS's? I love the FPS genre. I've always been a fan of Goldeneye, Halo, Gears of War, etc. I'm just saying that with a few exceptions, a lot of FPS's don't seem inspired. Platformers were used as licensed properties for movies and tv shows (and still are sometimes). Stuff like History Channel and 50 Cent are starting to show that the FPS genre will be filled with licensed garbage as well. And to that person who was making fun of the 'drawing contest.' The wii forum was feeling boring that day, so i wanted to make a fun thread.nintendoman562

Last time I checked, both games had First Person Shooting.

I don't see the fps genre dying anytime soon. There is a reasonwhy other genres died.

Fighting game genre - was at it's golden age during the 2D era, namely SNES era. Street Fighter and King of Fighters was leading the genre. Ever since the transition to 3D, these genre leaders found no place in the market, especially among fans. So the only franchises left were the ones who started off in 3D, ie. Virtua Fighter, Tekken & Soul Calibur. Mortal Kombat managed to scrape through. But without Street Fighter, King of Fighters or any of the Marvel/Capcom spinoffs, the whole genre almost died if not died off completely.

RTS genre - was once the most popular genre for pc primarily because the keyboard and mouse worked well with the genre. Now that developers are focusing their efforts on consoles, this genre is facing a problem. It is particularly difficult to micro manage with a game controller. So, apart from the original pioneers of RTS games like Westwood (now EA) and Blizzard, any other developer would not sought to develop an RTS game due to it's unpopularity on consoles. As a result, this genre is also dying if not almost dead.

RPG, Action, FPS - the prevailing genres of the current era, primarily because the these games work well on consoles and pc in terms of controls. And honestly, i don't see these genres dying any time soon.

FPSes are good for a while, i do want more platformers. i like them a lot as it gives more advanture and such to collect items and back track to another place to open a door or something. i think there are more FPSes because it's a little casual as people can just pick up and play the game from the save.

so platforming and fighting are dead now???????????tOtalPWNaAe
For platformers, they were in a downfall last generation, and early this generation, but I think that they're actually coming back now. The thing is that in previous generations, they seemed like a very innovative and creative genre. However, they had gotten to a point where they wer starting to run out of things that they could do, and were basically becoming little more than Mario 64 clones. Not all bad games, granted, but just became much less than they were in previous gens due to their repetitiveness. And that's why I think that they're coming back right now, because some games in the genre are trying to do something new with it. Mario Galaxy went from being the "new" 3D version of the genre that it established with Mario 64, to being a 3D version of the 2D games. Some may not like it, but I think it was a great change, and would love to see more games do something like that (as long as they don't overdo it like they did with the Mario 64 formula). Then you have Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts, which allows players to approach the missions using their imaginations to create vehicles. It does something completely unique with the genre (which some people may argue is going outside of the genre, but I'd say it's more like a vehicle-based version of the same genre). Then there's Little Big Planet, that doesn't neccessarily do anything new to the core gameplay, but allows players to come up with all kinds of unique ideas and share them, making an always expanding experience. And last, but definitely not least, there's Braid, which takes the typicle 2D gameplay, and makes it into more of a mind-bending puzzler where you manipulate time. And those are just the ones that I can think of off the top of my head. I'm not sure about the fighting genre, because TBH, I haven't really followed it too much since the 2D console days. But I can see what his point is. While the genre may not die off completely, it could go down in popularity due to too much repetitiveness. I think that right now, based on what I've seen, it still has some life left in it, with some pretty unique games, and enough different sub-genres to mix it up. However, I can see a time, maybe even next gen (although probably not that soon), when it will become too much of the same, and the popularity will be effected, and could end up becoming a "dying" genre.

Every once in awhile there is a genre crowded with uninspired clones of a more successful game. These genres include fighting games, beat 'em ups, platformers, and SHMUPS. You know what all these genres have in common? They are all dead. The same thing is happening to FPS's. So basically, if a developer is going to make an FPS, at least put something innovative or worthwhile in it. It's never good for a genre to die, and FPS's are a great genre that everyone could enjoy.nintendoman562

Generic shooter crap has taken over. But it'll die out the same way all the other trends died out. Look how many 3D platformers we had in the mid/late '90s, it was insane, and that's what sold the most. 3D platformers are pretty much dead now. 2D platformers, fighting games, 3D platformers, JRPGs, none of them are as big as they used to be, and shooters will soon be next in line, and I can't wait for this brown, generic, dark and gritty "realistic" shooter crap to die out. There are still good shooters, such as L4D, but most shooters these days are the same derivative casual crap, with 5-hour campaigns and stupid multi-player, and of course, one main color scheme: grey and brown. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

Remember when Doom came out? Doubt it but what happened was the market was satured with cheap knock-offs with no innovation and people were saying that it was gonna die like you are now. It's 2009 and we still have plenty of shooters.

That was different, that was on PC. The console shooter explosion is what I believe the topic starter is talking about, and that only really started in 2006 with Gears.

Halo 1 and 2 were smash hits, sure, but those were only two games, and there weren't any other huge-selling, blockbuster console shooters then. Epic basically ripped off the "badass soldier(s) kill evil Aliens" story of Halo, the gameplay of KillSwitch and Resident Evil 4, and the art-design of Killzone, and created a casual shooter craze with Gears. Terribly boring, derivative and overrated game, sure, but the casuals ate it up, and then they moved onto COD 4 and 5, Haze, Resistance, Resistance 2, Gears 2, etc. So yeah, basically, we have a bunch of Halo clones on the market now. It's just another trend, and in gaming, no popular trend stays on top forever.
