Hi all, I work daytime as an employee for a big company. After lots of analysis I have worked out someting astounding! The recession we are in at the moment is caused by PC gaming. It all started with the huge amount of games being developd for the PC because of all the money laying around. PC gaming development studios took loans from the bank, however they could not pay them back so they took loans from other banks to pay the loans they couldn't take back. For instance this happened with Crytek, like how they no longer patch Crysis (they have no money). It went into a cycle until the industry owed the banked into the trillions. Then there was a credit crunch, people wondered where all the money was. It had gone into gaming flops like Crysis etc.

Another company that faced the crunch were ATI, who because of the slump in PC gaming got bought out by AMD who is now also struggling. It had effects on the PC manufacturing giants of the world so it soon spread to the rest of the world.

What are your thoughts? should we boycott the PC industry for putting us in such a mess?

The problem with crysis is that next generation consoles will not be able to compete with it graphically, as it uses such advanced hardware.

So next gen is going to be about.... Ionno.

That's nice considering that console game budgets are several hundreds of millions, while PC game developers like Stardock can make profit with only 1 million budget and selling under 300,000 copies.

You miss the point. The point is pc games can be made at a very small budget and still have a high profit. Something Stardock is known for. With consoels its a different story their development costs are much higher.

In fact your reasons for PC gaming causing the recession are quite absurd. You seriously need to read the news properly.

You're either A REALLY REALLY bad TROLL or perhaps you just miss informed...What do you seriously have against PC gaming? without Pc gaming your precious Call of duty and Killzone would never exist so think about that before you criticise. Crysis is one of the exceptions. Most PC games are made with a very small budget when compared to what console games have.

That's why they can sell less and still make profit. Where a console game is a total failure if it doesn't sell over 1 million copies, a PC game can be considered a success if it sells over a couple of hundred thousands. Depending on the budget of course.

The point is anyone can develop a game for PC, with almost zero budget. Console devs need to pay for MS/Sony, and the development costs are much higher, so they need to sell more copies to make profit. That's why console devs are more hesitant to innovate and try new things.

That's why recession doesn't affect PC gaming as much as it does console gaming. Not to mention that console games cost upwards to 70€, while PC games can be anything between 5-50€. Also PC gaming has never been as affordable as it is now. The so called "2000$ rig" has not been true in years, I'd say if you're going over 1000$ you're paying way more than you'd have to.

OKAY HEAR ME OUT.

The recession was caused by the Wall Street companies who, primarily or before 2005, gave out loans to people who DON'T qualify to be getting loans. now, people would think, 'why would they give out loans to people who, in the long term, won't be able to afford to pay them?', but that is because most of these companies didn't really think through those decisions. they just want immediate money, and nothing else. surely, they give out loans, but most of 'em loans are from where? THE BANKS, exactly. now come 2008, and LOTS (i mean, LOTS and LOTS) of people can't already afford to pay their mortgage. so, their houses are foreclosed. of course we already had a hint that we're going downwards by then. and government-owned private (see what THEY did there? government-owned yet private ooohlalaa) mortgage companies handling out loans as well from, well let's just say, taxpayers' money.

but, in companies like AIG where as much as I would like them to go bankrupt (and im sure alot of people do too), having them announce bankruptcy will bring the whole financial system down. why is that? simply because TONS of companies invested in AIG (and AIG invested in lots of companies as well), so, the sharing of stocks and bonds and what-have-yous are branched out to lots of companies not just in the US but also in China, Japan, parts in Europe etc. so we resort to what we call a BAILOUT.

now, since people can't pay up, the banks who gave 'em loans (and the private mortgage companies as well) don't have enough money supply since they gave 'em all out. that's why US went into further debt because they had to borrow some dough (:P) from the World Bank.

another cause is a derivative of broken assets (or opaque assets?), and yezzz they were assessed BUT not in the most discrete manner and so the assessment of the risks involved was rather broken/tainted, and so the handling of the its distribution was, dare i say it, intentionally unfair. there i said it! :D

and don't get me started on over-leverage and the handling the bailout without any oversights or even receipts! XD

in short terms, nope. it wasn't caused by teh PC.

the end.

Boycott the industry? Why? It sounds like you're saying that PC gaming is the sole reason why gaming as a whole is feeling the pinch. Well, you can blame PCs if you want (It's a free country :P), and I'll continue to point the finger at GW Bush ;). Not just for gaming, but the entire crappy economy.
