No doubt. Thief was way ahead of its time & in many ways, especially gameplay-wise, still better than any stealth game out there because of its razor-sharp focus on stealth & stealth alone. Not to mention the way it utilised the infamous sound system for the player's awareness instead of lazy X-ray vision.

Thief series revolutionalised Immersive Sim genre and led to masterful franchises like Deus Ex, System Shock 2, Dishonored & whatnot. It also kick-started the career of Ramin Djawadi, the music composer of Game of Thrones, in the entertainment industry.

What nonsense. The best stealth game ever made (Thief 2) is only 23 years old.

What is some good Ramin Djawadi music in Thief? Some songs that truly stand out?

@Planeforger: That's good to know. I only ever played the second because I heard it was the best one.

Second best stealth game.

Thief 2 was the better game, as it polished up Thief 1 a bit, and de-emphasized the weaker parts of Thief 1.

@Mozelleple112: None of those games is a stealth game. They’re action games with stealth elements. Hell, the most stealth game of the bunch is Phantom Pain.

One could argue that on some settings, MGS is a stealth game. Such as 3 on European Extreme.

But yeah, Metal Gear, by and large, are action games with stealth elements.

Correction: Thief is not the original stealth 'em up. It was predated by popular stealth games like Metal Gear and Tenchu.

As for the greatest stealth game, that's more subjective. My pick for the greatest would be MGS2.

@Juub1990: Metal Gear are stealth action games. Genres are not mutually exclusive. The best games often combine elements of different genres.

@R4gn4r0k: I had no idea Ramin Djawadi worked on Thief until now. Looking up his credits, it was Thief 2 that he worked on.

I was never around during the Thief era, so I personally never cared for the franchise. I've started off with Splinter Cell as my introduction to the world of Stealth games followed by the MGS franchise.

The first Splinter Cell games were also pretty darn impressive and probably still my favourite stealth games.

Any old school gamers here remember Infiltrator on Commodore 64? Good stealth games were around way before Thief.

Pretty great, though I prefer Thief 2 to Thief 1

Anyone looking to revisit these days should check out "Gloomwood", basically taking the boomer-shooter approach and making a Thief-like stealth game. It's quite fun despite being in early access, and worth a look imo.

Agreed.

Thief obviously deserves recognition, but Thief 2 was the better game. That rooftop level alone was brilliant.

Yeah, especially Splinter Cell 2 and 3. I think Chaos Agent and Pandora Tomorrow were the names?

Much like Thief 2, the sequels polished up the gameplay of the first game and made it better. But before they ruined it with crap installments.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. But Ubisoft did "fix" Splinter Cell after the third game and turned it into an action game. Atrocious. I haven't played many Thief games, but I am sure the developers ruined them as well in later installments.
