According to last months Steam survey, the 970 is now the most popular card on Steam. In doing so, it has passed integrated graphics.

I guess the argument that most PC gamers play on potatoes can die. Just like the PC is.

I'd love to provide the link, but mobile US being weird. I'll edit it in later, or someone else can provide.

Great now we can get more high end games. I wonder how consolites will try to keep the potato PC argument alive.

There are over 125 million active steam users (as of feb 2015). If you use the list above (at that cutoff of listed cards) as a survey of the total population, then around 40 million of it active users use GPU stronger than an xboxone.

It's a great card, at a decent price point. Really looking forward to Pascal, cos that's probably going in my other PC.

I have the GTX970, it's an amazing piece of processing power.

It runs all games I throw at it at max (or whatever approaches it) at 1080p.

So I'm not surprised a lot of people found their way to this card for that money. A lot of positive critic feedback from reviews and even negative publicity is always... good publicity.

It only makes a difference if you run resolution above 1080p or use mods. For the vast majority of users right now, gtx 970 is a great value card.

I run 5970x1080 , and downscaling at 2k with 2x gtx 970's and use mods it has yet to make a difference, a year of using the cards and i have had no performance problems related to Video memory at any resolution i have used so far, i suppose it helps that the most demanding games i have that use the most video memeory are all on ssd's :)

Light mods really don't effect it. I know I had to do some finagling with my cousins gtx 970 when he heavily modded FO4 with his 1440p screen. The rule of thumb is typically 4+ gb of VRAM for heavy 4k gaming. You can download a display for how much vram you are using. It is very rarely you need to use more than 3gb in this day and age. I think they will change with the new GPU lines and finally the new hdmi that comes out this year. I think we will finally see 120hz 4k monitors.

I'm excited for Pascal, but I'll wait and see how it performs against my 980 Ti classy. If its only a marginal improvement, I'll skip the first lineup.

Uhhhh not sure if joking or what. You combined all the integrated, but compare it to just the 970?

Active Steam users with equivalent hardware to a PS4 or higher are now almost 60%, or about 90 million people. About twice the number of PS4's + Xbox ones out in the wild.

Just the 970 alone now accounts for almost 7.5 million - I think that brings the number of people with PC power equivalent to over twice the power of a PS4 to something like 15+ million?

PS4 is weak, but has better looking games. (Uncharted 4)

PC Gamers should not be gaming on potatoes however.

I'm not sure about most, but when I took the survey the program recognised both my graphics card and my integrated card. Not saying that there aren't a lot of people gaming on integrated cards but I imagine those numbers are inflated.

Other than a few cards more beastly than the GTX 970...I would guess 80something% have less powerful or non current gen cards.

Thats a lot more than 6 million.

The point is that more people game on a GPU over integrated graphics. People saying no one has capable hardware needs to die because it is now proven otherwise. It should be expected since hardware sales are at a all time high.

Try running Watch_Dogs with the E3 configurations which have been made available on Ultra settings, that VRAM limitation in the 970 will rear its ugly head even at 1920x1080, also GTA V will cripple that card.

People still pretend like you have to spend buckets of cash to get a PC that outperforms consoles, when low end PCs already do that. People still try to act like PC only caters to very specific genres when in fact it has all the same genres as consoles and plenty more. They still bring up "But I hate m/kb!" when you can use any damn controller you want. They still push the myth that consoles are somehow more convenient as if it's still gen 6. I still hear people talking about "hunting down drivers", or having to find fixes for every game as if that's an actual thing lol.

It goes on and on, but you get the point.

I had 2 970s and sold them for a 980 Ti because multi-GPU support sucks these days. The 970 is still a great card.

In regards to that list... There are some pathetic GPUs on that list. So, the potato argument is valid to an extent. The 970 is the most popular, but it still only accounts for 4.89% of total GPUs in the survey. Time to upgrade, you cheap mofos!

Every time Lemrits want to "debunk" the cost and hassle of "PC" gaming they make some list of low budget PC parts with no OS, no controller no disk drive etc. Just a bunch of junk to build the ugliest loudest electricity guzzling turd of a desktop that's likely a potential fire hazard. lol what's a lemrit bro?

Anyways, you just said a whole lot of nothing, impressive. Didn't even address any of the points in my post, yet still managed to beat your chest in your victorious moment. Well, I'm proud of you.

I don't subscribe to the ghetto build school of PC gaming. It's a stupid argument that these hermits get involved in. If I want a cheap device that barely gets by, I buy a console. The PS4 and WiiU fill that niche for me.

I'm not one of these clowns who goes out of their way to prove you can assemble a shit machine for the price of a console. What's the point? This is where reading comprehension has failed you son.

What I was saying is that it doesn't cost ridiculous amounts of money to get something better than a console. And that fairly low end hardware still punks consoles. No getting around that man.

"build your own electronics" haha. There are little kids out there who can assemble a build man. Can you assemble legos? Can you solve an 8 piece jigsaw puzzle? Then you can assemble a PC.

Funny how a €1000 PC is cheaper than a €350 console in REAL WORLD OUT THERE!!!

Of course one cannot push this reality check here in SW...but whatever makes consolites sleep at night...

@Pray_to_me:

you must think that all pc gamers are rich and brilliant. having enough funds to afford good hardware and having the intellect to put it together.

we may seem like a master race, but i assure you its just being financially responsible and being able to use google and follow directions.

Fine print: the most equals less than 5%.

5% of 125 million active users is still over 6 million users.

It's actually almost 150 million as per steamspy.

O boy that's 7.5 million at 5%

Doesn't change the fact that the amount compared to how many accounts/PC's there are...is very....very small.

however it shows that there is a quite a few users using a single "newer" gpu that is multiple times faster then X1/PS4, and that isnt including the other gpus that are equal or better than. So the number of PC users using gpu's as strong or stronger than current consoles number more than either console

@04dcarraher: Being stronger than the PS4 or X1 is neither here....nor there.

Thats a game for number nerds.

Does my PS4 play TW3 well? Yes. Am I completely enjoying the game right now? Absolutely.

Doesn't matter if less than 5% of Steam accounts have a faster GPU. That doesn't affect me.

To be fair...I have a GTX 680. Does my PC play Farcry 4 well? Yes. Do I enjoy it when I play it? Absolutely.

@mr_huggles_dog:

5% of a single card out of the 125 million number is 'small'? 6.25m owning a single card of 5 different cards in just that specific gen from Nvidia. If you add all cards that are better than consoles just from Nvidia and that coincide with the new console gen(6xx/7xx/9xx) you get almost 23 million Steam users not including AMD or mobile and only x6x and above. That number is also incomplete as many cards are missing and most likely in the 15.62% Other category(Titan, Titan Black, Titan X, 980TI, AMD R9 3xx series, Fury, etc.).
