I think certain people forget what a mediocre shooter really is. So allow me to remind them with a list of wholly mediocre generic shooters with hardly an ounce of originality (and some incredibly awful ones too).
Blacksite: Area 51 (6.5)
Pariah (6.3)
Soldier of Fortune: Payback (4.5)
You are Empty (1.5)
Hour of Victory (2.0)
Marine Sharpshooter 3 (2.4)
Medal of Honor: Vanguard (5.5)
Timeshift (6.5)
Killzone (6.9)
Instinct (2.0)
The Mark (3.0)
And many more...
The Halo series may not be the best shooting series ever in everyone's opinion, and it may not even be enjoyable to some of you, but under no circumstances does it deserve the title "mediocre". The series is recognized for a reason, and it's not just because its apart of MS's hype machine. It's because its a fun, engaging shooter with great gameplay (and decent graphics).
And this goes for other wrongfully accusted game franchises as well. Just because you are not fond of the gameplay doesn't mean it isn't a quality product. (Of course that doesn't mean you have to like it either).
I think the only reason the Halo series gets so much flak is because its so popular. I wouldn't call it "jealousy" but if someone doesn't enjoy a highly regarded game, they are quick to point out and disagree with it (sometimes become outraged by it). If the series was much lower profile, certain non-fans probably wouldn't have such a hard time accepting the fact that there are going to be those that like it and those that don't, and there is no universally well-liked game.
