The King of RTS games?

Now that it's settled that Half-Life is the king of FPS, who is the king of RTS?

I would have included Company of Heroes, but it's not a franchise like these others.

I would have also included Total War, but it's in a slightly different genre.

Likelihood is I'm missing a couple others, but have mercy, this was the best poll I could come up with.

Empire earth loved those RTS still play em with my friends.

A draw between Starcraft, Empire Earth, Warcraft 3+expansion, Age of Empires 2 and Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2.

I'm inclined to take out Starcraft because of its minuscule resolution compared to the other titles mentioned, it hinders my enjoyment sometimes.

In my opinion it's impossible to define a king for a vast genre like the real time strategy. There're so many variety that it isn't fair.

warcraft II all by itself. if you DONT have fun playing warcraft II your have terrible taste. warcraft II was basically perfect.

Surprised at the lack of Total War. But Starcraft, of course.

My personal favorite is Sins of a Solar Empire.

Most influential is Dune II: The Building of a Dynasty.

An "official King" is impossible to determine.

I prefer the Dawn of War series for its badassery and the awesome kill animation.

Super-durable units, etc, etc.

Homeworld is the most groundbreaking to me.

Starcraft, well if King here means success, then it's unquestionable that the Starcraft series is king.

I don't really like RTS, but wouldn't the first StarCraft arguably be king?

StarCraft by far, is the only one with such a worlwide succes. (sales, leagues, etc.), not to mention is a terrific franchise.

Starcraft for me. I have yet to play the 2nd one.

I love my starcraft. I love Empire Earth and I literally grew up with Age of Empires and Age of Mythology. But command and conquer has to take it for me, it basically defined the gen and made it what we know it today.

Of the list, Dawn of War II (sorry, but it's campaign sticks very close to lore, and teh RPG elements were well implemented). But for me it HAS to be Victoria 2. There is more strategy in it than alot of those games on the list.

Look at my Austro-Hungarian empire for example. Is it impressive size wise? Nope. Is it impressive Industry wise? YES.

EDIT: Wait untill you see my Boer empire.

I am not a big RTS fan, but my buddy loves C and C and has been playing a lot of Yuri's Revenge lately. We are both going to try out Starcraft II, and I am hoping that the demo makes me a believer. I don't know I can love any RTS though :P. of the ones I have played, older C and C's are the best.

I've gotten the most enjoyment out of C&C, and it was also the series that got me into RTS games in general

I love RTSs and played hundreds of them, but only one can be the king and thats Starcraft 2 no contest.

Tiberian Sun felt rushed and unfinished (i.e. flame tanks cant shoot up a hill). The best of C&C series was imho the original Command and Conquer, the first Red Alert and C&C: Tiberium Wars

Warcraft 2 for single player and story (Warcraft 3 ruined Warcraft, lol gnomes, lol anakin skywalker clone)

Starcraft for multiplayer

Starcraft and Starcraft 2 are, that's non negotiable.

Starcraft: Brood War. Balance game and very competitive online.

I haven't played many RTS games but from what I have played Starcraft 2. I also enjoyed Age of Empires back in the day. Im about to start playing Company of Heroes after pcking it up cheap on the steam sales. I heard its really good so im looking foward to digging in.

Company of Heroes. Why it's not in the poll?

Well, my 2 favorites are not on that list...Homeworld and Company of heroes.

Starcraft is king, but i sitll prefer AOE and RA.

Define franchise.

To me, a franchise is a game with multiple expansion packs or games.

The fact that there are 3 Company of Heroes games denotes it as a franchise.

Personally my favorite is the Silent Hunter franchise and I wish that they had updated Destroyer Commander to go along with the newer SH games.

Yeah I know but it's the closest thing I've played to RTS and it was awesome as hell.

This. You might not like Starcraft, and that is OK, however Starcraft is the undisputed king of the RTS genre. The multiplayer is unrivaled.
