i believe you got it wrong ,ffx was the start of the downfall. till then ff had worldmap and were less linear, the transition of the games from 2d to 3d was bad, they didnt create cities, the made the games too linear to lower production costs, and many other things.
you want to see a game on par with the oldschool ff games? try lost odyssey. this game is amazing it is truly the only jrpg that has what old ff games before ffx had. simply amazing game. its a shame that sakaguchi wont work again for an rpg on a console, cause they dont sell as well as on handhelds and the cost is huge.
square droped the ball hard when they merged with enix, they were too afraid to go for ffvii remake, they were too afraid to go for fft-2/kingdom hearts 3 and they wanted to take a piece of the mmo-cake (huge fail btw). seriusly i dont expect them to recover any time soon.
the thing is breath of fire series is dead, suikoden series is dead,ff series is dead, and mistwalker moved to handhelds.what is left??? atlus/nippon ichi ,but even atlus isnt making a new persona game and focuses on handhelds and "catherine" .
u want good jrpgs? go buy ffxiii/lost odyssey/valkyria chronicles/tales of vesperia/eternal sonata/disgaea3 etc... go buy console rpgs and they will come back..
