@wervenom:
"If I learned anything people generally only review something if they love it or hate it."
This is true in most cases but there are others where people openly bash something once controversy spreads around it. Suddenly it's political, then you get right wingers into the fight and turn it into some phony war with liberals and the so-called Liberal Media. And thanks to the leaker, they have key information about the game and can use it to make their review bombs "believable."
If you ONLY saw the leaks and bad reviews then you're only going to get a negative opinion on the game. Because that information is only limited to key plot twists and someone else's view on the game. Their opinion becomes your opinion and then you run around with it like you got all the answers of the universe.
While SOME of those leaks were true, they don't initially tell you everything about the story. Just enough to get you pissed off. Then YouTubers who thrive on controversy can feed on that anger and get more popularity by making negative videos. Playing the actual game in its entirety fills in the blanks and there are a lot of them that these butthurt idiots don't realize.
After speaking with several of these naysayers on various comment sections, I've come to the conclusion that they still don't understand jackshit about the story. Just what they were told and what they were led to believe.
- If you were to go back in time to before Last of Us 1 released and leaked key info on the story, you can easily end up with very similar results of disgust and hate.
*Joel was supposed to take care of Ellie and make sure that she made it to her destination. Which was a makeshift hospital with doctors and researchers looking to find a cure for the zombie virus. Ellie was the best hope for a cure.
*Joel ended up stopping this from happening, slaughtered everyone in his way and basically obliterated the Fireflies.
*What he did was a giant middle finger to the entire adventure. Suddenly, everything you did to make it that far was for nothing and basically was a giant waste of your time. But hey, at least Joel met Ellie right?
And of course, because we DIDN'T KNOW about the Last of Us 1's storyline, we were able to enjoy it free of any bias. If we did know about it then we would realize that the entire adventure is an enormous waste of time and basically Naughty Dog is just trying to sell you a run-of-the-mill story about a mourning father finding a surrogate daughter.
If we're going to blame anyone for the unwarranted hate, blame the leaks.
