Zelda attracts a hardcore following. Especially if it turns out to be 3D Zelda's equivalent of A Link To The Past which I think it will be.

The new Zelda is part of Nintendo's accessible series of games taking causals who play games like NSMBW and SMG a step further into gaming. Nintendo have taken out complex parts of the interface and replaced it with a pocket inventory system.

People who sold their Wii's will buy a new one to play Skyward Sword. People who where holding out on the Wii will buy one to play Skyward Sword.

And of course Zelda itself has a following that tops games like Call Of Duty and Halo in terms of their overall fanbase. On top of this gamers will want to see what Nintendo can do with Wii Motion Plus.

Biggest game of the generation?

...pretty much any 360/ps3/pc multiplat zelda games aren't really top sellers. They usually end up in the 4-8mill range

Really dude? I love me some Zelda, but it won't outsell Call of Duty.

Maybe even not Halo Reach. Its not going to be the biggest game this gen, and Zelda games are often some of the most praised and critised games in the industry.

There is almost as much game media frenzy praising upcoming zelda games as bashing it usually.

All in all, we just have to wait till it comes out. (And a real trailer that isn't essentially a demo reel, I want an epic trailer that gets the blood flowing!)

Hopefully it follows Punch out and SMG2's trend of April-May releases for Wii, i doubt it comes out in March coz the 3DS comes out then

Those games are all niche to an extent. Halo and COD only attracts casual FPS gamers (of which there are many), Wii Sports is a pack in so obviously that was bigger. Zelda is going to attract casuals, hardcore, Zelda fans, even Microsoft and Sony fanboys are going to buy a Wii for Zelda in my opinion. I think it will be the defining game of the whole generation.

To put it simply, Zelda: Skyward Sword is where casuals and hardcore gamers will find a common interest.

Wii Fit, Kinect Sports, Sports Champions.

Wii Fit? Yes. Kinect games? No. So what if 5 million Kinects are sold, we have no idea how much software the Kinect base, which is going to be different from the Core 360 user base, will buy of Kinect games since its too early to tell.

I see it this way, as far as IPs not on Wii, that Halo, GTA and COD are the only titles bigger than Zelda sales wise and that is assuming Zelda doesn't return to its better selling glory days ala Ocarina of Time.

We could seeSkyward Swordbreak10 million, but I doubt much more.

Read what I said. I think that Skyward Sword will be 3D Zelda's equivalent to A Link To The Past. OOT was on the N64 which wasn't even a dominant console.

What is to be hardcore? Are these hardcore players truly "hardcore" if they play nothing but that game and don't take risks buying new, small IPs? So how are they less guilty than the Wii Fit gamer who doesn't buy Okami if these "hardcore" players don't stop playing Halo to buy Tropico or Eternal Sonata?

I doubt Zelda is the defining game this gen, I really think COD has a shot at that purely from the point that it, along with Halo, has really shown how much the gaming industry can compete with the film industry.

I mean Harry Potter DH Part One took in 330 million dollars its first weekend, half of what Black Ops made in its first week. That is huge that a single game is making that much darn money. If anything represents this gen, its going to be how "punk rock" and destructive the core gaming base is when outsiders invade their territory and how big budgets/revenue on games are now.

Same thing could've been said in the first days of the Eye Toy and many other titles, doesn't mean we actually throw their unproven names around in a discussion like this.

Argueably there is a larger potential audience for everything, including WWE video games

Those are hardcore COD, Halo, GT, Wow, SC players... meaning that they spend hours upon hours perfecting their skills, getting the latest armor, finishing the race in less time than their japanese counterpart, getting into the latest tournaments, where only the best of the best players participate.

Biggest game? It is not Dwarf Fortress... or hell as far as mainstream games go, ArmA II and never will be. Nonetheless I expect it to be big in scope. If anything Skyward Sword is looking very unremarkable at the moment, which is a shame. Twilight Princess has soured my taste for LoZ games more of recent, I admit, and nostalgic talk of Majoras Mask with friends makes me wish there was another LoZ title as inventive.

Dedicated gamers. I'd call a 'hardcore' gamer who is a bit more well rounded when it comes to gaming, development and culture. I've seen obsessive competitive players who are only interested in the next WoW expansion or COD title, or Counter Strike for instance. I'd say they would be firmly in the core demographic.

u are wrong...dead wrong... i wouldnt buy a wii for zelda (even though i have one packed in a box somewhere never been used besides the first week of hardcore ssbb marathon) and cod is a common interest to casuals and hardcore gamers... do u honestly think EVERYONE that buys cod is a casual gamer...i buy it but i dont consider myself 'casual' :\ oh and Dragon quest X > zelda :)

Define 'biggest'. Biggest as in best? I doubt it. Sure, it will naturally be a quality game like pretty much any Zelda, but for it to beat, say, Super Mario Galaxy 2, it would have to be something really, really special. And from what I've seen of and read about the game so far, I'm still having my doubts about it having an impact on the genre that will be in any way comparable to what, say, LttP andOoT did. If you define biggest as the most sales, I also doubt it. I know of no Zelda game to date that has come even close to selling 10 million copies. So I really have no clue why you claim the potential following of the Zelda series is larger than that of CoD or Halo, because that simply isn't true.

Biggest game of the generation? Slim chance. When you look at the tons of amazing, monumental, revolutionary and memorable games that have come out in this gen so far, Zelda: SS will have to exceed the expectations of many, including myself, to even qualify. And this is coming from a Zelda fan.
