I like Halo, but i wouldn't consider it an important FPS, cos its not really revolutionary.. it was probably many peoples 1st fps, but so what...
Golden Eye, - as someone said, 1st console fps done right, with both good MP and SP
Half Life, most definatly
and even though i don't play it myself Counter Strike
But for me personally Unreal Tournament
Wolfenstein 3D for pretty much inventing the genre and Doom for popularising it, but next is Half-Life for taking the early FPS formulas and ratcheting it up several notches. Halo IMO didn't do a whole lot of original things, just took a lot of FPS elements and did them really well.
Deus ExBioShockOwnz
To be fair, I love Deus Ex, but I think it's more of a First-Person-Action-RPG, personally.
Glad lots of people are saying Half Life.. I am sure EA will give the PS3 people.. a great game when they are done porting it ROFLMAO!!! The Fast Food of Gaming!!!NitaraPwnzU
Considerng how weak HL2 looks on 360 (gameplay -wise, altough visualy it also doesn't hold a candle to fakefaktory mod) I don't think you should be bashing PS3 version.
Wolfenstein 3D for pretty much inventing the genreJagazaarI was playing multiplayer MIDI MAZE years before Wolfenstein.
Doom, without question... Of course it isn't even included on your list :|AfterShafter
The correct answer is Doom and Quake. It has to be both of them. Those two games together helped shape online gaming as a whole, period, not just shooters. Generally-speaking, Quake took what Doom did, made it 3D, and brought it to the Internet. And when it comes to just shooters, well, their influence is vast and overwhelming, at least as far as multiplayer is concerned. Half-Life moreso for the single-player, story-driven type shooters we started seeing afterwards.
wolf- to start out the fps
half life- for story driven fps
unreal or quake - multiplayer....unreal was my first and my fav
[QUOTE="Planeforger"][QUOTE="Tylendal"]What about Turok for the N64. As far as I know, it was the first game to use the duel analog scheme (or at least analog and d-pad).Tylendal
Anyway, I'd say that Wolfenstein3D in the most important - it took the FPRPG genre, simplified it, and added guns...and we've been playing them ever since.
But the C-Buttons are (in function) a D-pad. So it did introduce duel-analog control, did it not?
Yeah, I agreed with you. I'm just saying that it wasn't the D-pad. :D
Doom - Started it all (yes wolfenstein was 1st, but doom made the genre)
Goldeneye - the most important console fps, it brought the genre to consoles
Half-Life - proved and fps can have an amazing story, among many other things
Unreal Tournament - the king of online fps multiplayer (counter-strike didnt come until 2 years later)
The 4 most important fps's ever. Halo has no place on this list
Deus ExBioShockOwnz
Deus Ex aint a shooter, (one of my fav games, but its an RPG/adventure)
Doom (first true FPS, brilliant))
Halo (gameplay mechanics, vehicles, melee, grenades on the fly etc)
Half life (invented scripted sequences, awesome atmosphere)
Goldeneye (first FPS to integrate stealth with shooting)
