I don't know who made the first game in first-person perspective. But, I remember Battlezone and Star Raiders.

SEGA

Developed Shnmue with set the standard for Open world 3D video games like GTA

Lets not get ahead of ourselves. These existed on PC years ago on one hand and Shenmue is a piece of shit game that absolutely didn't influence or set jack shit. I mean come on. Let's not rewrite history right here on gamespot system wars

Rewrite history?

lol ok buddy tell me what game came out that did all this before Shenmue?

"Shenmue consists of open-world 3D environments interspersed with brawlerbattles and quick time events, and features a level of detail considered unprecedented at the time, including a day-and-night system, variable weather effects, non-player characters with daily schedules, and variousminigames."

These are FIRSTS in the world of video games. Pipe down PC fanboy, just because you don't like something doesn't give you the right to object with nothing but BS.

I degress tho, tell me the "PC" game that introduced this model, with those things underlined, in an open world 3D games before Shenmue? And once you realize that you won't find any game to fill those shoes go ahead and crawl back under that bridge you came from.

Edit:

Oh and also included full voice acting throughout the entire game and not just text scrips...go!

Plenty of games did that before Shenmue. Ultima games had NPC routines and stuff and there was a game in 1991, that was fully open world and inspired GTA. Sandbox games were there before Shenmue as well. And there were also plenty of games with full voice acting too.

Great thread. Nintendo is the obvious choice with the impact of Mario. SMB3 is just a gameplay monster. It's unbelievable that game exists inside 256KB of space.

Wing Commander II was not the first game with voice acting.

Nintendo is the most influential developer. I want the drugs you're smoking.

Wasn't the first PC game to do voice acting either.

Yeah. Origin is easily one of the most influential developers in history. Ultima alone (the most influential series of all time, easily) is enough to secure that position and they did far far more

Sega is up there as being influential, I'll give you that.

All these things about Shenmue though? All of that shit was done years and year prior man. Half that stuff was covered by Zelda alone, though even then, Zelda wasn't close to being the first.

On topic, Nintendo. Really no way around it. That said, Origin is an excellent choice as well.

Please enlighten us. I'm not talking about direct movie sound rip offs but actual speeches during the gameplay itself written by game writers.

Voice Sampling =/= Voice Acting.

Mario teaches typing on dos in 1991. They hired a voice actor for it. Got rereleased in 1995 with a different voice actor.

I'll stick with Nintendo. They pioneered multiple genres, created multiple game conventions, and created so many games that still serve as design templates for the industry today, and which are still considered to be among the greatest games ever made. I do not think there is anyone who can argue that Nintendo does not belong on a list of most influential developers.

I respect the OP's well thought out conclusions, he did a good job of presenting it. However, I have to agree with you here and say Nintendo.

Nintendo. Period. They created the modern market. They revolutionized the branding, the games, and the hardware numerous times. It isn't even debatable.

all games are influential because developers are influenced by previous and current games of all genres. Who did what first doesn't have much relevance on what inspired it nor influenced others because movies, art, books and even other gamers..etc also influences game development.

Nintendo's games are the antithesis of "stale".

As for simplified, almost every major developer in the market is guilty of the same, and a lot of them in much more extreme degrees than Nintendo.

the most recent mario titles for example. basically reskins of the 2d mario titles from 25 years ago. the last games they made that felt fresh are the mario galaxy titles. and before that there was another incredibly long gap. if you look back to the 90s they were making games that were paving the way for what other developers did(star fox, mario 64, wave race, zelda OoT, mario kart etc. now their games are stale and simple as all ****. they are incredibly polished no doubt, but still stale.
