I agree I dont get why halo is so popular. It's like the most generic game out there. fartranger
wtf, how is halo more generic than counterstrike?
What made Far cry famous is probably what is Crysis now. Graphics. Nothing more nothing less.

I hope you're being sarcastic, because gameplay wise Far Cry was a lot better than Half Life 2. You had countless possibilities in terms of engagement, the AI was outstanding and the guns atleast fired nicely. Sure Half Life 2's physics and Story were better, but the gameplay itself was unchanged since Half Life 1 and rather dull at times. The only moment I truly enjoyed Half Life 2 was when you were controlling the Ant Lions and raven holms.
I've only played one complete series, and that's halo. And I think it deserves the whole of it's score. ("I knew it, he had an MC picture as avatar!")
Unlike other people here I do see why the halo series got it's score. First of all the gameplay is amazing, and unlike the other fps. Secondly, the halo series made multiplayer console fps. Halo CE brought coop play and great splitscreen with lots of costumization to the xbox, immediately became a hit. Halo 2 featured a brilliant online setup with parties and matchmaking, and I wish modern fps would have an fps that was even almost as good as halo 2's. Halo 3 did other things again, like the video replay, forge and 4 player coop, and the integration with bungie.net is also great.
But then again it's a "generic" fps. Yeah, right. That title still goes out to COD4 and partners.
Anyways, enough of the rambling, I think the term overrated is just misused royally everywhere. Overrated became synonym for "yeah, I don't like it, but the rest does!" *tear*
SHENMUE!!!!!!! STOP claiming that it is the 2nd coming please!!!!!

You know what's funny, I've heard of this "Shenmue" haven't really looked into it, but people who talk about it.. I must agree... make it sound like the 2nd coming.

RFOM has taken that crown already
HAHA! As much as I disliked the Halo sequels for their blandtacular gameplay, RFOM brought that to another level. FPS is the genre I devote more than 3/4 of my gaming to, and to see Cows hyping a game of RFOM's calibre as greatness... Pathetic.
There are so many other hyper-fail game series out there... God Of War strikes me particulary hard.
Some series are starting to head towards faildom as well. Final Fantasy for example. Final Fantasy 11 was a joke, a mistake, a failed experiment. Final Fantasy 12 was a travesty, a disgrace to the series and Japan itself.
The Halo games are pretty overrated. Because they're just not that good. Well, thats not entirely true. Halo: CE was great, and it definetly deserved the praise it got. Halo 2 however was already overrated, the SP was far worse than CE, though the multiplayer did get quite the boost. Not enough to compensate for the mehish SP though. Halo 3 is extremely overrated. The SP was very short and even though the MP was good, it didnt feel like a big enough change when compared to Halo 2.
The most overrated games (in my opinion) are the GTA games though. The first three were great games and even though they kept improving the games with VC and SA they eventually all felt like the same game with a new lick of paint.
Halo 1's gameplay is actually really unbalanced. Pistol anyone? Also Perfect Dark brought co-op, play 2 player againest each other (in a level one is jonna dark and one is enemy) and one tries to beat level and one tries to kill other player, A.I. bots,I've only played one complete series, and that's halo. And I think it deserves the whole of it's score. ("I knew it, he had an MC picture as avatar!")

Metal Gear Solid, Tomb Raider (Uncharted with boobies), Call of Duty, Medal of Honour and every other WWII shooter franchise. Oh and Half-Life.QuofanTomb Raider came before Uncharted...
I think in many respects Halo didnt innovate anything, rather simply implemented themI've only played one complete series, and that's halo. And I think it deserves the whole of it's score. ("I knew it, he had an MC picture as avatar!")

Another prolem with the later Halo games was things that were introduced were done better other games.
As for 'generic fps' well Halo has been characterised it, after CE - during the Halo 2 and 3 development stages simply because the game consists of A to B killfest. There is nothing in between, exept trotting at a regular pace, killing everying. Sometime scripted sequences are thrown in for good mesure, but these are repeated (ala the scarab) - which is similar design to early fps games like Doom, Quake ect.. It is a very harsh generalisation though, as Halo isnt a 'generic fps', even if it follows the same type of gameplay - it doesent mean its bad. Singleplayer wise since Halo 2,3 went anything special post CE imo. As for multiplayer, its the best on the xbox 1 and 360 .
COD4 isnt really a generic fps, i'd say its more of a controlled thrill ride, or even borderline rail shooter (singleplayer).
When you look at the massive hype, and surprisingly high review scores of the last two Halos - more noteably Halo 3, you can see why people judge it this way. I personally think Halo 3 is a 9.0 game - thanks to the great multiplayer.
oh and as 'I like Pizza' said
"Overrated doesent mean bad"
"Over-rated" does NOT mean "bad" in my book. This is one of my favorite series of all time, but I think it's grossly over-rated:
Grand Theft Auto
There wasn't enough change from III to SA to warrant the reviews it got, imo.
What's the most overrated game? Which ever one you (yes, you the reader of this post) loves the best, is in fact the the most overrated game.
Why? Why not? Every other nomination (including Halo) IS JUST AN ARBITRARY CHOICE, so the above is just as valid as any of the others.
