What is the most "mature" game ever created?

Mature can mean a lot of things to a lot of people. So, in your opinion, what is the most mature game that you have ever experienced?

---

Mine? Is going to be damn near impossible to top.

Killer7 is filled to the brim with things that even a lot of adults can't come to terms with. Killer 7 deals with the darkest sides of politics and the human psyche. Also, it has plenty of other very mature topics as well, such as child smuggling and sex. The game itself has a great deal of blood, gore, sex, and profanity. Also, this game is so scary that it makes resident evil 4 look like daily news. Still scary, but ignorable, unlike killer7, which will never allow you to fully get the imagery out of your head.

Still don't believe me?

http://youtube.com/watch?v=PXwWjxbzuIk&mode=related&search=

---

This video has MAJOR spoilers. Don't watch it if you are even slightly interested. It will kill the whole experience.

(Warning, all of these videos are very graphic)

Postal and Postal 2. There was a man in a weiner costume named crotchy who is the mascot for a children's amusement park, and the point of the game is to either wait in line for fifteen minutes to cash a check (or other tedious things) or go postal and kill everyone, by decapitation or any other gruesome means.

Resident Evil 4. It's very violent but it's for a reason. It also happens to be awesome.

I'd have to disargee. Postal even realises that its not taking itself seriously. I love postals humor and political messages though.

As much as I love Killer7, I think I'm going to have to go with either Thief or Planescape: Torment on this one.

Killer7 struck me as a little immature at times - a lot of the violence and swearing was just totally unnecessary.

Hmmm. I dunno. I thought that last game in the Gabriel Knight story was a good example of a mature game. It was weird because when DA VINCI CODE and stuff came out I was like "Didn't anybody play this game?!?!" it sort of takes that whole story and mixes it with vampires.

Planeforger

Well, also. There are 2 kinds people who played killer7. The ones who just saw the violence and swearing as itself, and the ones who actually thought and tried to uncover the story. Hence its differing reviews.

o-o Huh.

A lot of people here are impressed with just violence and sex as being mature.

That leaves me with a snoody sense of self satisfaction.

Any Gabriel Knight fans here? It was a series of adventure games. Good mature stuff with a lot of different angles but definitely placed in the horror genre.

I would agree with you, but....Glottis kinda killed the 'mature atmosphere' if the game. Some of his scenes were just awkward.

JiveT

Damn, good point, totally forgot about the Gabriel Knight series (although I'd pick the first game over the third).
Oh, and the DaVinci Code wasn't exactly ripped off from GK3 - they both heavily borrowed their ideas from the book Holy Blood and the Holy Grail, although GK3 was the best adaptation of those theories that I've seen/read/played.

*edit* Thinking of GK (and totally derailing the thread :P), anyone else hyped for Gray Matter - Jane Jensen's new game?

It's not because the atmosphere that I rate Grim Fandango as mature. But because it along many other games of it's kind are mostly appreciated by mature audiences that find them gratifying gaming experiences.

Shadow of the Colossus is not mature because it's violent...hell, it's not all that violent. It's mature because it's a work of art. It's mature because of all the real emotion communicated through complete silence.

Silent Hill 2. *** Possible Spoilers ***

Child abuse, rape, graphic violence, mental illness, uxoricide, self-judgment and redemption, fate, infidelity, sexualization of inanimate objects...

It's violent, but the adult themes present throughout make it much more disturbing than any of the violence.

indeed! Shadow of the Colossus is the most mature title I have ever played because it represented something of such simplicity that anyone could get HUGE emotional meaning behind the story. It was truly a form of art!

Eternal Darkness. The dark nature of that game with each character's fate and such, now thats some twisted stuff there. How each character met up with a horrible fate. From Sacrfice to imprisionment to suffering, very mature themes in that game, a story for only serious thinker, one with maturity.

He didn't describe the Heaven's Smile too well - they're basically normal people, forcefully turned into invisible suicide bombers that laugh maniacally as you blow away their limbs with your assorted weaponry.

Oh, and the victim in that vid was hardly a nice guy. While the guy who killed him is into kidnapped/orphaned girls, Pedro prefer boys. ;)

..yeah, Killer7 really was one ****ed up game. Awesome, but crazy.

The suffering's basically the same except for the rape and sexualization. Although, I'm sure you could find a "drop the soa" reference in there somwhere.

Unless you have an economics degree and are fairly educated and intelligent you won't be getting far with this:
