IGN:

Hardcore gamers have been anxiously awaiting MadWorld for a long time. But not everyone is happy to see the stylish, kill-happy game arrive. The National Institute on Media and the Family (NIMF) issued a press release this morning complaining that Nintendo has "shed its 'family friendly' reputation with MadWorld's release."

"The release of MadWorld for the Wii brings violent videogames to a once family-friendly platform," said Dr. David Walsh, president of the National Institute on Media and the Family. "In MadWorld, gamers use the Wii Remote to make the necessary physical actions to chainsaw an opponent in half, impale an enemy with a signpost or decapitate a victim with a golf club. MadWorld is another reminder that parents need to make sure they watch what their kids watch and play what their kids play.

"In the past, the Wii has successfully sold itself as being the gaming console for the entire family and a way to bring family-game nights back into people's living rooms. Unfortunately, Nintendo opened its doors to the violent videogame genre. The National Institute on Media and the Family hopes that Nintendo does not lose sight of its initial audience and continues to offer quality, family-friendly games."

The press release goes on to quote IGN's review of MadWorld in order to describe some of the possible kills players can perform.

Each year, NIMF issues a videogame report card, grading the industry on its efforts to regulate violent games. In 2008, the industry was given an "A." Over the years the organization has singled out many games it found objectionable, such as Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. In 2005, NIMF famously accused the videogame industry of promoting cannibalism because of the Xbox game Stubbs the Zombie.

This makes me angry and laugh at the same time. First of all, this institute acts as if the family has carried Nintendo to this point supporting its N64 and Gamecube. Second of all...

I wasn't aware there was a "violent video game genre". Do they mean beat-em-ups?

It is their American right to free speech, and I will defend to the death their right to say it...but the amount of support this statement will get (enough to change Nintendo's future plans) makes me sick. Why do kids have to ruin what I do in my free time? Why does everything have to be censored because kids might see it? Why does %&^(%($ everything have to revolve around kids? What about those of us that DON'T want to deal with an 18-23 year financial drain? What about those of us who want the time to devote to our careers and other endeavors we think are righteous? What about those of us who don't want to lie to a small person about all of the good in the world so that they can be corrupted instantly upon hitting college. I don't want kids ruining MY life. Yet in modern-America, everything has to be kid-friendly. Makes me sick.

Thats pretty fail of them. A couple of violent games doesnt mean it cant be a family oriented console anymore, no one is forcing you to buy it.

I think they should also send letters to Sony for allowing violent movies to be watched on their Blu-Ray players, and Microsoft for allowing graphic websites to be accessed through internet browsers on Windows.

Think of the children!

In a modern western society, that is how it tends to be. But be happy you live in the West where censorship > religious fanaticism. I don't mean to offend the east, because I respect that they have such passion for their religion (unless you're china... who are passionate atheists XD), but i'm sure happy I live here.

Agreed. Reggie said when asked if he was worried about MadWorld that all games are welcome to the Wii because it's meant to appeal to all people. Hopefully this encourages more developers to attempt more mature titles on Wii (and I don't mean just rated mature).

After watching Watchmen and seeing a large family (one as young as 8 ) I have to laugh at the stupidity of the whole thing.

I'm definitely with the fans on this one ;)

What? Nintendo Family friendly? Resident 1, 0 and 4 say hi. What about the SNES? What about Conkers Bad Fur Day on N64, Killer Instinct on N64. Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, I could go on and on and on. One needs to brush up on their history before calling Nintendo, family friendly. I also forgot, Killer 7 and No More Heroes.

What? My neighbor's kids were having such fun playing No More Heroes and House of the Dead: Overkill, can you believe how upset they'll be once Madworld comes out and their family friendly fun is ruined? I'll ask them how they feel about this the next time I'm playing them in Halo 3.

Exactly... people just assume it's for kids because it's so wildly appealing to families... but in truth it's a gaming console... some more mature games would be awesome for it

Like Manhunt 2, Resident Evil 4 and No More Heroes were not released.....

I just laugh at whoever think they're safe from violence, nobody is. I really hope they didn't see the Wii as a tool to be a lazy parent and know that the kids are playing safe. What a disgrace....

Kids need to be exposed to this stuff at a younger age, and I'm not talking the highly stylized, ridiculously over-the-top content Madworld has. I hate censorship.

But damn do I want Madworld.

A parent doesn't want kid to play a violent game?

Solution: Don't buy the game for your kid.

And if they can't understand the ESRB system then I don't know why they are raising kids.

It clearly states the rating with a big letter, and it says mature, plus on the back it says why it's rated mature

Okay, so after all those other violent games that came out for the Wii, they choose to single out this release as Nintendo "shedding their family friendly exterior"?

Attention people: the Wii is not a toy, it is not a board game. It does not serve one function for only one group of people.

Exactly, and then they give other believers a bad name, and is partly why you see other misinformed people bash religion for all of society's problems.

I dont know if any of you remember what it was like to be 12 or 13, but if my parents didn't let me play a game (happened maybe once) then I went and played it at a friend's house.

You can't stop that. Not unless violent videogames are banned for good.

Do any of you really find that to be such a stretch considering the sanctions imposed by the FCC post-wardrobe malfunction?

It is pretty sickening. I remember going to see Freddy Vs Jason I think it was... and there's a sex scene right at the beginning of the movie... and there was parents with three or four 7ish year old kids. It's insane.

The solution for this problem is easy, just watch what your child is playing at home. Madworld has a Mature rating for a reason, and if you are a decent parent you will be able to control what your kid is playing while he is at home. However, you can't control what he will play when he goes to other friends' houses, that's how the world works.

Ok. I've been watching violent movies and playing violent games since i was a toddler. Instead of watching The Karate Kid i wanted to watch Blood Sport or Kick Boxer. Instead of watching the Little Mermaid i watched Jaws. Instead of watching The Never Ending Story i'd rather watch Hellraiser. People use to blame TV, People use to blame movies, People use to blame rock/rap, Violence is on the net and now its Videogames turn again to be moaned at for being violent. Violence is everywhere, You turn on the News you hear about people being blown away by terrorists, You hear about murderers, You hear about rapists but parents still allow there kids to watch it with them but dont count that in the same aspect as violent. Kids get into fights at school which is violence but i bet you hear the dad say "I hope you socked it to em kid" which is encouraging violence. I'm sick to death of stuck up parents thinking they know best when all they are doin is sugar coating the reality of the world which is.... ITS A VIOLENT PLACE. Stop blaming games for your kids beating people, taking drugs, swearing and blame the person who is the guardian of the child which is *Drum roll* themself, I hate people who make excuses instead of lookin in the mirror.

All kids want to watch and play violent things. That doesn't mean they should be allowed to just because violence happens in real life.

Instead of watching the Little Mermaid i watched Jaws. Instead of watching The Never Ending Story i'd rather watch Hellraiser. Cherokee_Jack

All kids want to watch and play violent things. That doesn't mean they should be allowed to just because violence happens in real life.

I just see it as parents blaming everything on anything else rather than looking in the mirror seeing why there children are screw ups. Violence does not do you any wrong. I had the choice to watch/play what i wanted and with the right parenting i did fine. My parents knew the differance between blaming everything else for there mistakes and looking at the real source which is bad parenting or naughty child.

In the past, the Wii has successfully sold itself as being the gaming console for the entire family and a way to bring family-game nights back into people's living rooms. Unfortunately, Nintendo opened its doors to the violent videogame genre. The National Institute on Media and the Family hopes that Nintendo does not lose sight of its initial audience and continues to offer quality, family-friendly games."

Do they realize family include matured adults, as well?
