I have been bothered--no, annoyed--by the idea that the Nintendo Wii is exclusively for "casual gamers." I feel that this sort of ideology is flawed and ignorant for numerous reasons.

Firstly, the Nintendo Wii provides a plethora of classic games through the Virtual Console service. These games would be unattainable--or difficult to find--if it weren't for the Virtual Console Service

Secondly, by presenting less powerful hardware compenents, developers are motivated to provide unique graphical styles (see: No More Heroes, Muramasa).

Thirdly, games are significantly less expensive to produce on the Nintendo Wii. This is significant, as games from smaller, more niche developers such as Grasshopper, Vanillaware, and Cing, and Xseed are able to produce great games on a platform.

Now, it is completely acceptable for an individual to solely own a Nintendo Wii. As with all the systems currently in the market, the Nintendo Wii provides a diverse array of titles.

Here are some recent/upcoming games which prove my point:

  1. Super Mario Galaxy 2 (Platformer)
  2. New Super Mario Bros. (Platformer)
  3. Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom (Fighter)
  4. Metroid Prime Trilogy (Shooter/Adventure)
  5. Metroid: The Other M (Shooter/Adventure)
  6. Dragon Quest X (Role Playing)
  7. Little King Story (Role Playing)
  8. Muramasa (Action Role Playing)
  9. No More Heroes 2 (Action)

The Wii provides so many niche games. These niche games appeal to a specific audience: hardcore gamers. Now, the Wii clearly has problems: it lacks quality first person shooters. Publishers are trying to fix this solution with games like Red Steel 2, and Conduit. However, I would say that the lack of quality first person shooters will always be a negative aspect of the Nintendo Wii.

Regardless, I hope this clears some of the confusion and ignorance regarding the system. I personally do not own a Wii, but I'm not foolish enough to call it a child's toy or a system for those ignorant to video games.

EDIT: MR55 pointed out a critical flaw in the spelling of my topic title. Your help is appreciated, as always.

The Wii is great, and it's misunderstood.

However, I can see why many more manticores are coming about this gen, overall this gen doesn't seem to have the End all be all system.

The Wii has some O.K. looking games, but the DS/Ps3/Xbox 360 supply more games that interest me.

There are a good amount of 'hardcore' games for the Wii, and if it starts getting better games I might think about buying it.

The wii can't provide the quality shooters or RPGs the ps3 and 360 have.

It's fun but it doesn't have any 'next-gen' appeal and the ps3 motion controls look like they're going to offer the equivalent of a next gen wii. That's what one control scheme i'm hoping works out

This thread needs more adorable blobs lol

How can you not LOVE that people? You all make me sick, every last one of you. Anyway, Wii has good games but its not for everyone. It severely lacks in a lot of genres popular with a lot of gamers and I think that needs criticism because why buy a wii if you like TPS, FPS, WRPGs, racing, Stealth etc?

I know this place has a bunch of animal names for loyalists, but I never heard "Manticore" before. I agree with you regarding the lack of a "be all and end all" system; but I feel that someone can own a single console and be more than satisfied. I only own a PS3 and DS right now, and I am very happy. However, that also maybe due to the fact that I play about 5-10 hours a month.

Yeah, The Manticores are friends with Unicorns and Pegasus', but hate the goblins, and velocirator's.

It all depends on the gamers, agreed.

If you think the Wii is formidable now, watch when it destroys the Japanese economy because everybody will skip work and school to buy Monster Hunter 3 and Dragon Quest X.

On that day, Nintendo will have taken over an entire country :P

It is a great system yeah, but not if you are a Shooter, WRPG, Racing fan.SparkyProtocol

but if you like your games to be diffrent then the normal shooters,WRPG, and racing games

you should own it just for the controles on FPS (which next to m/k are the best out there) and metroid

and MK is probably the best spin-off racing game out there.

the wii is for people who want to try something a litle bit new and exciting

You were at Comic Con? That's pretty awesome dude! The thing is, while the Wii may have Guilty Gear, Brawl, and TvC, it's also missing out on some of the biggest fighting franchises (Tekken, Virtua Fighter, SF4, KoF, etc)

Yes. Comic Con was amazing this year--especially the Capcom and Sony booths. Anyways, I agree with you, but I feel that the Virtual Console presents a surplus of classic fighters: and I think that makes the Wii stand out, really.

Saying the Wii has no good third party games is like saying the PS3 has no exclusives. The excuse is old and washed up.

No I just find it interesting that you call people ignorant or foolish when it seems you never finished English 101.

I gave my reasoning as to why I believe it's ignorant. You are more than welcome to prove me wrong. You should have probably taken a course in argumentative writing to understand what's going on in this thread. Also, your insults are petty. I'm unaffected by them as I am a Bioengineer student. I am many things, but I'm not un-educated.

Firstly, the Nintendo Wii provides a plethora of classic games through the Virtual Console service. These games would be unattainable--or difficult to find--if it weren't for the Virtual Console Service. I dont see the big deal about virtual console. How can people be so stoked about dedicating their time to playing so many old games its hard enough keeping up with all the new quality titles coming out.

Secondly, by presenting less powerful hardware compenents, developers are motivated to provide unique graphical styles (see: No More Heroes, Muramasa). Presenting less powerful hardware components. Keeping technology at a halt. Oh, and the wii goes for more than a 360 now.

Thirdly, games are significantly less expensive to produce on the Nintendo Wii. This is significant, as games from smaller, more niche developers such as Grasshopper, Vanillaware, and Cing, and Xseed are able to produce great games on a platform" This is like saying we should all revert back to playing NES games beacuse theyd be so cheap to make. Dont you like playing cool new games??? And its not like these developers cant make the same game on the other two consoles. PSN, XBLarcade?? no?

But regardless, I think its amazing how successful the wii has become, hats off to nintendo's marketing.

The virtual console is a great service. I probably would not have bought the wii if it didn't have it. I never owned a NES/SNES/N64/GENESIS etc. as a kid. I always wanted a super nintendo, but I never got one. Thanks to virtual console, I can catch up on some of the games that I'd always wanted to play but never got the chance to (i.e. super metroid, ocarina of time, etc.). I also know lots of people who prefer older games to newer ones (for example: the only system my girlfriend ever owned was a SNES, which she no longer has. she prefers 2d platformers over any other genre, which the virtual console has plenty of). A lot of people I know have previously owned NES or SNES but lost/broke/sold them over the years, and want to play the games they grew up with again. The virtual console gives those people an easy way to do this (much easier than hunting down old games/systmes).

The wii does have less powerful hardware. At the beginning of this gen, it offered a more unique control system as the alternative to powerful hardware. This is one thing that made the wii so popular. Now the other 2 systems are adding motion control.

1) I prefer hard copies to unaltered ROM's. At least when the Virtual Console service goes offline two decades from now, I'll still be able to play my hard copy of Super Metroid.

2) Third-parties still seem incredibly reluctant to send in their big-name titles to compete with Nintendo's first-party. Sure, they toss in a few interesting games here or there, but none of them are commercial blockbusters. They know they can't compete with the likes of WiiFit and prefer to take profits from PC, 360 and PS3.

3) Games are even cheaper and easier to produce on PC... which is why the population on Indie developers is so much higher on PC than consoles. And with PSN and XBLA + XNA, indie developers have free choice of whatever platform they choose... they don't have to choose Wii because both the 360 and PS3 offer downloadable games services that don't require insane publishing licenses and costs.

The Wii has a gimmick, its sold well and continues to sell to a particular audience. It will never be able to compete in the core market with the likes of the PS3, 360 and PC (due to its hardware limitations and lack of core appeal). Its too much a "Nintendo" system and many developers don't wish to touch that with a 30-foot pole. They'll put their more mass-appeal games on there... but we'll never see the likes of Assassin's Creed, Mirror's Edge, Devil May Cry 4 or Prince of Persia on it.

yes, but motion control hasnt made gaming better, not yet. Its just more popular now, which is why the 360 and ps3 have to adopt. Not until we reach 'virtual reality' (or even natal for that matter...) motion controls do not offer the accuracy of a mouse (for gamers who are concerned about competition, responsiveness) and motion controls do not offer as much immersion than High-quality graphics at the moment (for gamers concerned about being in another world or whatever)

Aw really? People voted on Braid? I like the Dead Space sig better. I kinda find the Braid one more bland compared than the others. :(

Anyways, although the wii isn't the most powerful, it still has a great line up. People hide behind the shovelware excuse like no other consoles has had it. Some people are just ignorant and ignor-rant.

The Wii is best at Shooters and racing games, but it doesn't have any.

They'll put their more mass-appeal games on there... but we'll never see the likes of Assassin's Creed, Mirror's Edge, Devil May Cry 4 or Prince of Persia on it.foxhound_fox

1.you will be able to play 2 decades from now in your wii your hard copy saved on your SD of Metroid thanks to the VC.Maybe in fact, you can still use your old save files, which you might not be able to do with the SNES carts. 2.some third parties are reluctant. But the significant amount of them than do, provide ample and satisfying coverage. Indie developers , specially the case of World of Goo, admitted higher returns on the wiiware than on the PC download market.Seems to me that if they care about their finances ,they will go where the players actually pay for their games. Hardware limitations often only work against certain narrow minded developers. Indie developers who doesnt have the millions to shell just to satisfy the minimun bare visual requirements of the other consoles, and take dev time from actually fun factor, such as the mentioned in the original post, are the ones sided with the wii. There was a prince of persia for the wii.And ubisoft admitted later that even tho the system limitations of the latest POP were what held them back originally, it wasnt the best desicion. So what do you think of "never on the wii". Assasins Creed was on the DS...Never?i wouldnt bet on that word. Mirrors edge isnt a particulary good example of a game most core wii owners would care about. Sure it was fun (and had some wii boards), but then again.. And then there DMC 4. Well if capcom did Dead Rising, you will never feel safe saying never. On the other hand, who cares?Wii still keeps getting amazing and exclusive titles like Sky Crawlers or LKS, from the very exact same developers you claim wont touch the wii(AKA ubisoft). Never say never.
