Contrary to popular belief, there is only one true weakness of the PC platform and that is Japanese made games. Although there are actually many Japanese games on the PC, they never make it outside of Japan. You also can't find anything on the PC that's like ICO, Shadow of the Colossus, Metroid Prime, Super Mario Galaxy (there are great 2d platformers on the PC but not much 3d ones), Legend of Zelda, etc.

What's even more aggravating is that most Westerners who are PC gamers don't care about Japanese made games. They aren't even remotely interested. I have observed this from PC gamers who post on GS. It's funny because just a few days ago there was a thread about Japanese who supposedly discriminate against Western made games. Well there are actually Westerners who distaste anything Japanese too.

You can truly sense a difference in both style and feel between Western and Japanese made games because of different cultures. Yes there have been Japanese made games that feel like a Western game and vice versa but they are few.

If only PC gets more Japanese games, it would become the best main gaming platform to have.

I just agree a little bit, it might not have the games you listed, but especially indie devs do create comprerable games, just recently there was a JRPG released on Steam (forgot the name though ^^)

Wow... this is honestly the first time in system wars that I have seen someone list a weakness(s) of pc gaming and doing it truthfully and not some fanboy crap.

PC gaming is nearly perfect, one thing I would personally enjoy a few more jrpgs.

Good thread TC, nice to see a thread like this actually truthful and not some bs like "Consoles I can use my HDTV and xbox controller!" when in reality you can use your HDTV and xbox360 controller on pc, you actually made a legit reason!

recettear and chantelise. Most of Japanese PC games are indie (doujin) or H-games (or both, in many cases). Falcom is the only one that makes something that isn't part of the two continually (and some other companies as well, but rarely) nowadays.

It's not a weakness if you dont want it. I hate Japanese games because of the gameplay, plot (s) and awful artistic design. If a Western dev made a Japanese game, it would suck too.

Yep I've always wanted to see more Japanese developed games for PC. I find it kind of silly that most of the time they develop multiplatform games, but don't release on PC. They probably don't even think much about it as they're used to be console-only, but they'd sell a lot on PC.

People LOVE and play to death all of those asian MMOs and RPGs on PC so I'm not sure why we don't see that kind of games from the big studios. Also, I have a 360 but don't really bother with those games as to be honest, I'd rather play them on my PC as I use it all the time, and it's so convenient and fast to just launch a game through Steam.

It is a weakness because it's lacking regardless of your taste. I don't get why someone would hate a video game. You're not even forced to play it. Hate is a very strong emotion. I can never hate a video game. "Dislike" is the appropriate term for my tastes. Maybe it's a psychological thing for the Westerners to hate Japanese made games. I'm Asian so i wouldn't understand. Muramasa Demon Blade and Okami are some of the most beautiful games i've ever played.

There is nothing psychological about hating (I use that word for everything I dislike) the gameplay, artistic design and story arcs of Japanese made games. Games like Final Fantasy are horrible imo. Incredibly outdated gameplay mechanics with stories that make Halo/Killzonelook Oscar worthy.

Maybe you haven't found a Japanese made game yet that caters to your taste. I have played Japanese made games that have great story, gameplay, and artistic design and they're not Final Fantasy titles.

PC doesn't get JRPG's because the PC gaming is not as big in Japan as console/handhelds (especially handhelds), Japan is where the majority of JRPG sales come from.

I'm not just talking about JRPGs. I'm talking about anything that is Japanese made. Ghost Trick, Professor Layton, Okami, Muramasa Demon Blade are great unique Japanese games and it would have been awesome if PC gets games like these.

only very few ppl have powerful pc, and in many games especially rts, if somone has slow pc that lag very badin your match, you will get lag too no matter what pc you have. in fact, many ppl still buy pc games even their pc barely meet minimun requirment.

For mmorpg, blizzard, and valve's games, pc actually has quite awesome gaming experience since those games are usually well optimized and fewer bugs.

i just hope it doesnt become a weakness of consoles by next gen also...JRPGs in general have been hit hard imho. many of them on the PS3 and 360 just seem to be taking steps backwards (lostwinds was probably the best JRPG i played on the HD consoles but its still not the JRPG at its best imho). ive been playing xenoblade though and boy can they still pull it off when they want to. maybe its the cost of tech...it just doesnt really work for JRPGs. the likes of square just seem to be really struggeling in getting great JRPGs out on consoles. its been handhelds where they have been at their best this gen imho. unfortunately japanese publishers seem to want to take a more western approach to development though and if that continues then itll be very sad. although we will have games from japan we may see fewer games that are japanese. the likes of xenoblade may very well be the last of their kind. as for the PC...yeah (though again...its funny that almost every game you listed TC was first party). i would love to see a japanese game made for the PC from the ground up....i think it could be ace. the problem at the mo with japanese games is that there developed for consoles and then ported over. that really doesnt do them any favours. but is there a market there? well recettear did quite well..the people who released it were very happy. it didnt sell in the millions but it made a nice sum of money for them and the game is pretty darn niche (very cool though :D). games from south korea do quite well also and MMOs from japan have ticked over nicely (FF11...not the dominant MMO but a nice little money earner for square). could they gain more traction if they really tried? maybe. they could have a witcher type hit on their hands. or they could end up burning money...who knows. but id love to see someone like capcom or square make an okami or a FF (not necessarily those brands...they hold little sway on the PC so a new IP may be in order) for the PC. not just plonk it on the PC but actually make it for the PC.

Yep, the amount of visual novels/eroges/nukige is staggering. Over 30 Japanese games are releasing on the PC on the 26th alone.

There are a few games here and there, but not nearly as many as on the consoles.

Devil May Cry 4, The Last Remnant, Street Fighter 4, BlazBlue, etc. But great stuff like El Shaddai, Bayonetta, Vanquish, Tales of Vesperia, etc are not on the platform. If they were I wouldn't need a console.

In my experience, I've found that japanese games seem to be much more unique and have better stories than games developed by other countries. When it comes to America, we just churn out generic brown-and-bloom FPS #12. Other than within its same series (eg. most final fantasies are similar to each other), I find a lot more variety within Japanese games. Though I primarily use my PC for gaming, I have my DS too to obtain the less well known gems that come out of japan

You know, this is one thing i never thought about. I just think the PC needs more exclusives so people could actually test the technology and push it. Kind of like DICE with BF3 ( if you know anything about BF3, then you know this is true.)

Ya i definetely agree. I would love to see Falcom's pc catalog on steam someday, especially since alot of their stuff is already fully translated. And a variety of other japenese devs id like to see make/publish games for pc like From Software, Platinum, Atlus, etc...and especially Nintendo!(obviously never going to happen:P)

It's not a weakness if you dont want it. I hate Japanese games because of the gameplay, plot (s) and awful artistic design. If a Western dev made a Japanese game, it would suck too.

I don't have any interest in Japanese games, and that's really why I own a Wii anyway. I mean, the only series I really care about from Japan are Nintendo games, Metal Gear, and (maybe, kinda, not really) Final Fantasy. MGS Rising is coming out on PC, too, so... yeah. I'd say PC gamers have a much narrower taste than console gamers, and a whole lot of them own consoles specifically for this reason anyway.

I was in Japan for a couple of years (2006-2008). I've seen quite a few Japanese play MS Flight Simulator on their PC. They seem to prefer traditional simulation-type games on the PC. Here's another example.

There is actually many japanese pc games. Most don't see release outside of Japan. I don't know if you want to call that a weakness as depending on the person, you can enjoy said Pc games if you understand the language or want said game. Not as if PC games are region locked.

ArchoNils2
It's Recettear, and it's a really good game. In all honesty, most Japanese developers are moving to handhelds, which is more of the reflection of the general preference in its demography.

[QUOTE="caughtjoo"]Just give me Demon's Souls already and all will be forgiven.mitu123

I would do some ridiculous things to get Demon's Souls on PC. Just thinking about it gives me chills. All those mods...

And the graphics...and the better framerate since that game had FPS drops at times.

Yeah when a lot of objects break the frame rate drops pretty significantly. All right I need to stop thinking about a PC version of Demon's Souls. I'm getting too excited for somehing that will neevr happen :(

[QUOTE="lordlors"]In general, it is a weakness because it is a lack of something.Stevo_the_gamer

Except in this case, when it is a plus. :]

A plus means an addition not a lack thereof.
