Well of course PC sales are going down. It doesn't take much thinking to realize there were markets full of people who had no alternative to buying a full PC. They don't need a lot of power, they don't need games, they don't need video processing, they don't need audio editing, and they don't need a big ass desktop or bulky laptop. They need basic features of computing that can easily be offloaded onto a much more focused device like a tablet.
Up until recently there have been absolutely no alternatives to a desktop PC or a laptop that have been remotely worth it. If all you need is web, music listening, video watching, e-mail, and some basic document writing, you still had to invest into a full laptop to get all of that. If you wanted one that will last more than 6 months before falling apart, you needed to spend far more than the $299 specials at wal-mart.
However now there are great alternatives. Tablets from all manufacturers are replacing that market of people who just didn't need the full PC with 3 usb ports, a DVD drive, massive harddrive, and all of that bulk to get the "full PC" experience.
From a gamers point of view this doesn't mean anything. If your laptop or PC could be replaced with a tablet and you suffered no losses in valued functionality, you weren't gaming or doing anything that required real amounts of power.
The only market this is effecting is the people who made flash games for a living. Now they are making mobile apps. That's the biggest difference from a gaming standpoint. Just like before, EA and other companies are seeing this as a viable source of revenue like they did with flash games (remember Pogo and all of those EA flash games?). So they'll be increasing support for tablets as the profit margins are much higher than any console or PC market due to the extremely low development costs of mobile games for tablets/smart phones.
Once there is a viable sub 300 dollar tablet on the market that doesn't suck and gets a decent amount of publicity, expect PC sales to fall even further.
From a gamers point of view this has nothing to do with Apple at all. They may be the only ones offering a decent tablet at the moment, but they aren't revolutionizing gaming as we know it. Nvidia has shown time and time again that gaming PC hardware and software sales are going up and software revenues will surpass that of console gaming in a few years. This is all despite the iPad's popularity.
The iPad is replacing the PC in the market where the gaming functionality of the PC was irrelevant. How this thread got to this many posts without people realizing this is beyond me.
