It appears in an incredible upset, Thief has (in fact), won. Never seen anything like it. If only the team was alive today to accept the award.
Well it seems that mgs5 is getting the lead now.
I have played thief, at the time of release. It wasn't the first time i played a game of sneak though. I already played metal gear solid on the playstation 1 but thief was different. For starters it was technologically a lot more advanced. My pc (pentium II with riva tnt gpu) murdered the ps1 at that time.
But now you want to compare the 1 st thief game with a 2015 AAA title. That's kinda comparing apples and oranges and i still would be inclined to say thief was better, for its time. Not because of nostalgic reasons, thats why i am saying for its time. Of course mgs V is the better game, it has a 17 year advantage, and those years were pretty crucial for 3D gaming. Thief was a game released when 3d gaming was pretty much still in its infancy.
But why not compare mgs V with the latest thief. I would have to give it to mgs V but hold on to your horses, both games are not good imo. They're decent, but to me these games are past their expiration date. That doesn't mean those games can't be good for anyone else, but not for a seasoned hardcore gamer like myself. For the mainstream public however this can be a great game because the games are very well made.
The problem with these games for me is that they lack originality and innovation. A driving force in the gaming world that's being overlooked more and more for the sake of sales but that's just the way the world works. When these formulas will be milked for the mainstream public, devs will push for innovation because they will see a hole in the market. That's the thing with mgs V and thief. There's still a market for those games , even more so for mgsV because the setting and characters of the game are better explored. The latest thief for instance could do a lot more with that medieval settings instead of just being a thief, even the first game was about more than thieving, the adventure factor was more deeply explored.
If we're talking about sneaking in general I would have to say that a game like skyrim is much better at it because it's implemented in a much bigger game. While sneaking to me very fun, a game must have a lot more than that in 2015 and it's also the reason why I think mgsV is a mediocre game that's extremely well made but the gameplay is too repetitive to compete with other aaa titles like skyrim. I know skyrim is a different lore and an rpg game but a game deus ex hr, where the lore and gameplay is a lot more similar, is a lot better than mgsV imo. I know deus ex has a lot of rpg elements but even if we're talking just gameplay it was better than mgsV, allthough it was way too short and way too small.
I hope the next deus ex fills in the gap that metal gear solid tries can't, for me anyway. Like I said, i'm an older seasoned gamer and I'm sure mgs V will be ace for a lot of people but not to me, not the single player component anyway. If the multiplayer component of mgs V would be very good, well that would be another story , because then we're talking competitive multiplayer gaming but as for single player content I would give mgs V no more than 7/10.
