Poll The Phantom Pain VS Thief (71 votes)

The Phantom Pain 59%
Thief 1/2 41%

Please be aware: This poll is designed for mature gamers, if you are a younger person who was too young to have played Thief, please do not vote, it's an invalid vote.

Having recently read the Eurogamer review, the reviewer, a very young man who recently looks like he left Hogwarts, proclaimed:

Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain is not just a high watermark for the series. It is the greatest ever stealth game by a distance, a true masterclass from a designer and team who bow out at the very peak of their creative powers. This is one of the greatest blockbusters our medium has ever had as well as the perfect ending to one of gamings' great series - and the end of one incredible, extended journey from Hideo Kojima. For decades to come, players will see the legacy of Metal Gear Solid, and have no choice but to salute.

Since this young man wrote several articles before gushing, gushing, gushing, over the series as a whole, to sickening levels, this was taken as reactionary hyperbole.

Is this true? Is The Phantom Pain better than the original Thief series? It seems being the newer game, with a user-base that probably never even played Thief, the poll results will probably be incredibly screwed by blind voting, wholly ignoring the disclaimer, destroying any hopes of objectivity.

But is it?

While Metal Gear Solid is an amazing franchise, the original Thief games will always be considerably more impactful games for me.

and that's why I voted for Thief, never played either game (never played a Thief game and have only played one Metal Gear)

My friend, you should've removed the poll and allowed manual countings. Cause you know, people love "stat padding" polls.

On topic, I definitely enjoyed Thief: Deadly Shadows but that was around 2004. Deadly Shadows had decent to great stealth gameplay that was even better than Dishonered.

I haven't played Phantom Pain yet though. But if I will use Ground Zeroes to compare them then I will vote Thief.

I have not played Phantom Pain, but I do love Thief. Even Deadly Shadows was awesome. The newest "Thief" I've heard sucks balls, though. I've always considered the MGS series too cinematic for my taste, but will give Phantom Pain a shot, as people have praised the gameplay.

I hope your joking... or too young and comparing the gen 8 theif. TC was referring to Thief 1 and 2... masterpieces of stealth design, yet to be topped. It used both 3d sound, and material based sound. You step on glass it crunches under your feet. Wood sounds different than stone, sounds different than metal, sounds different than carpet. The room size and what is in the room has sound bouncing. Characters conversations are done in real time 3d space. It was and is still the best 3d sound in a game. Developers don't prioritize 3d sound today, it stopped happening since vista took away the 3d sound hardware from pcs and turned shit into a software only approach. 3d drivers eventually came out but by then the devs had moved on. It's why you don't see any pc game touting hardware 3d sound as a bullet point. Console never had it like pc.

MGS as a series is good (great even), but stealth is only part of it. The drama is more what mgs is about. Thief 1 and 2 being my all time favorite action gaming series is miles a head of everything in the realm of stealth.

Is this coming from someone who's played the other ones? Or was this your first Thief game? I ask because I love Thief, and haven't tried the last one because of the supposed suckage. But if a Thief fan enjoyed it, I might have to try it..

Sorry, can't say I'm a thief-fan.

I'd never been into stealth games much. But since I loved Dishonored so much, and it was my GOTY for that year I really looked forward to Thief.

Thief had a lot of flaws (I could look past the short but frequent loading screens at first, but it became annoying after a while). But what the game did great was it made you feel like a thief ! You were light on your feet. You were in and out of the house with your loot and without anyone noticing. It did that aspect really well.

I think Deus Ex mankind divided will be much better than MGS5.

MGS never been stealth franchise. stealth games dont force you in boss battles. there are no boss batles in thief thus its real stealth game.

Thief 2 is ultimate Stealth game. From the beginning to end, you can complete the entire game not only without killing anyone but also without disarming a single guard and without disturbing a single item. Its final level is one of the best levels ever crafted in a video game. Instead of QTE battle or firing rocket launchers, you are performing series of different tasks, just like any other mission (but on steroids). It was very clever mission design.

The secrets in the game encourage you to explore everything in the game. Once you are in the level, you are given set of tools with different functions. Then it's entirely up to you how you use those tools in creative ways to find your own way. The game doesn't add notes in your inventory automatically as well. Instead, you have to read books and notes, and then write your own notes by typing them with keyboard.

The game gives you full control and really makes you feel like a Thief. Not to mention dark atmosphere which makes you feel like a true anti-hero who enters in places that are cursed and unholy (full of supernatural forces) to steal old religious/important/cultural artifacts and gold. The experience that those games give is unmatched.

Thief has way more depth but MGS V is more streamlined and intuitive.

I'm going with Thief since I truly believe it's the best stealth game ever created but I rather play MGS V.

Doesn't the current Thief live up to your desires?

And why MGS5?

I really like Thief, I think it has better level design than MGSV, but MGSV also has some very good level design that truly allows for you to play from any approach you see fit, which is, so far, very fun.

Plus as good as Thief is, playing it now, age has not been too kind to it.

Oh, please... I've played thief 2 and Deadly Shadows. They were very good for their time but they've been long surpassed. Only PC fanboys dwelve on them cause they know most console gamers havent played them. Typical PC fanboy line: "a *insert old PC game here* is better than anything ever released on consoles and consolites cant deny it cause most havent played it"

edit: And just as I expected, posters defending thief on this thread are well known hermits. Go figure

Depends on what you are valuing here, there are a lot of technical achievements in MGSV that make the stealth gameplay badass as **** that Thief can't really deliver on. But I've always appreciated the cerebral and tense feel of the best Thief levels, and to an extent that's what I dug about Splinter Cell's stealth as well. Those games are more strict in their "be a ghost or gtfo" approach, and that is incredibly gratifying.

No. It's a blast, but as a stealth game it's still not as rich and well developed as Thief 1-2.

But I still love what MGSV does to stealth genre. Open world suits it damn well and it's the first MGS I can honestly say I'm playing more for gameplay than story/setting. Kojima will be missed. To be fired just as his magnus opus hits the market is so damn unfair.

@Midnightshade29: Oh look... I WAS joking ;) everybody who has played the POP series know that there is no stealth factor, once you enter an enemy's radius they automatically turn to you.. you cannot compare MGSV to Thief because while MGSV does have a stealth aspect, the entire focus is not on it unlike Theif, where the entire game requires this focus.

Well it seems that mgs5 is getting the lead now.

I have played thief, at the time of release. It wasn't the first time i played a game of sneak though. I already played metal gear solid on the playstation 1 but thief was different. For starters it was technologically a lot more advanced. My pc (pentium II with riva tnt gpu) murdered the ps1 at that time.

But now you want to compare the 1 st thief game with a 2015 AAA title. That's kinda comparing apples and oranges and i still would be inclined to say thief was better, for its time. Not because of nostalgic reasons, thats why i am saying for its time. Of course mgs V is the better game, it has a 17 year advantage, and those years were pretty crucial for 3D gaming. Thief was a game released when 3d gaming was pretty much still in its infancy.

But why not compare mgs V with the latest thief. I would have to give it to mgs V but hold on to your horses, both games are not good imo. They're decent, but to me these games are past their expiration date. That doesn't mean those games can't be good for anyone else, but not for a seasoned hardcore gamer like myself. For the mainstream public however this can be a great game because the games are very well made.

The problem with these games for me is that they lack originality and innovation. A driving force in the gaming world that's being overlooked more and more for the sake of sales but that's just the way the world works. When these formulas will be milked for the mainstream public, devs will push for innovation because they will see a hole in the market. That's the thing with mgs V and thief. There's still a market for those games , even more so for mgsV because the setting and characters of the game are better explored. The latest thief for instance could do a lot more with that medieval settings instead of just being a thief, even the first game was about more than thieving, the adventure factor was more deeply explored.

If we're talking about sneaking in general I would have to say that a game like skyrim is much better at it because it's implemented in a much bigger game. While sneaking to me very fun, a game must have a lot more than that in 2015 and it's also the reason why I think mgsV is a mediocre game that's extremely well made but the gameplay is too repetitive to compete with other aaa titles like skyrim. I know skyrim is a different lore and an rpg game but a game deus ex hr, where the lore and gameplay is a lot more similar, is a lot better than mgsV imo. I know deus ex has a lot of rpg elements but even if we're talking just gameplay it was better than mgsV, allthough it was way too short and way too small.

I hope the next deus ex fills in the gap that metal gear solid tries can't, for me anyway. Like I said, i'm an older seasoned gamer and I'm sure mgs V will be ace for a lot of people but not to me, not the single player component anyway. If the multiplayer component of mgs V would be very good, well that would be another story , because then we're talking competitive multiplayer gaming but as for single player content I would give mgs V no more than 7/10.

My friend, Skyrim has THE WORST sneaking in any game, ever. Even a casual 3.4 tutorial Assassins Creed game has better sneaking and those are a meta form of awful.

On higher levels, you are literally using god mode. No skill is involved, none. Crouch, 1 hit kills, no need to even attempt to hide. The games currency as well, becomes moot.

In Thief, skill is required, and regardless of how technically superior games have become (as with earlier titles such as id's Quake) good, solid level design wins. Intricate, well thought out levels (that actually do respect your intelligence).

In Skyrim start at A, follow B, walk to door, start back at A, over and over and over and over and over.

Just thinking about it is making bad feelings happen.

On topic: 40% of the Peace Walker votes will be discounted, it's pretty clear Kojima fanboys are blind voting, a disgrace.

how can you say that skyrim has the worst sneaking, it is affect by light just like in thief, and it is affected by noise. However , it is true that in thief you can put out candles with water arrows, you can't do that in skyrim but the ai for noise is a lot more complex. But like i said, i like the sneaking in skyrim a lot better because it's implemented in a living breathing world. You can't say that about metal gear solid, thief comes closer to that though but still nothing like the vastness of skyrim.

And the god mode you're talking about, well it takes a long time for you to get there and skyrim is an rpg, so it's only normal you have perks like this. If you play on the harder modes it takes ages to get there.

Skyrim...LOL

Duck down and now your in 'stealth' mode.

(might as well just dump a bucket over someones head)

Obviously Thief 1 & 2 shits all over Metal Gear when it comes to stealth.

You can not compare both of them, they use completely different approaches. Thief is a Dark Souls of stealth games - it's about atmosphere, level design and very hard difficulty, and you collect the lore piece by piece in game, slowly shedding the light on what's going on, no hand holding. In short Thief is Fucking amazing. MGS is more like a modern spy drama than a pure stealth game, it's very focused on cinematic cold war storytelling and it also a pretty amazing game in many aspects. Both games are legendary in their own niche.
