I got an iPod Touch last week and decided to go looking for games on it. I opened up iTunes and checked out the App Store.

First of all, there are hundreds of thousands of games out there. I was immediately overwhelmed and decided to check the bestsellers list. I checked out a few free games, and they are mostly crap - not worth anyone's time.

In the end, I was so overwhelmed by the options that I didn't know exactly what to buy - and ended up not buying anything as I had originally intended. Yes, I'm aware of games like Infinity Blade, Angry Birds, etc, but finding good games like those are a significant challenge, given the volume of games out there and lack of reviews from anything resembling a mainstream gaming press.

No, the problem with iOS games is that they have no good organization of those games.

I'm thinking that's going ot be part of this whole thing with the Apple CEO meeting with Gaben.

There does need to be better organisation. The only real way of ascertaining quality so far is word of mouth.

This is the OP's problem right here...but that's not the only problem I have with iOS gaming. For the controls to not totally suck with most games, you need an iControlPad. Even then, it doesn't really work with most games on the App Store unless you jailbreak it and use a special utility to map the iControlPad's buttons and analogs to touchscreen interface elements. (At least, that's what their Web site claims it can do.)

Yeah they don't surface the quality games well at all. They don't really want to either, because plenty of games are comparatively low-rated but consistently popular.

I only learn about new games from Jayisgames or the occasional mention on Giant Bomb, and I feel like I miss a lot.

The solution is to get games that are actually built for iOS and thus work without sh!tty virtual buttons.

iOS is never going to be a good platform for games with conventional control methods.

The problem is that the games suck. Why bunch a bunch of .99c apps/ripoffs of flash games when I could buy a 39.99 3DS game that I actually want to play?

there are more problems then just 'too many games' (even though the vast majority of them suck) 1. Ads... lol 2. Imprecise controls due to the lack of buttons 3. Incompatibility - my samsung galaxy s (not 2) cant play a lot of the newer released games... and ive seen reviews of multiple games where a lot of people with different phones cant get the game to work.. ok the last point is more of an android thing...but still.

I think the main issue is that all the games are crappy minigames that wouldn't be caught dead as full retail games anywhere else. This is why facebook and flash games are popular. There's 0 good games on ios. There may be fun ones like cut the rope and fruit ninja, but they're still just minigames that have no lasting value. You can't control any worthwhile games on ios, so don't use it for gaming. Get a real game system, for a handheld, definitely get the 3DS although if I were you, I'd wait for the next model of 3DS which should be out sooner rather than later.

The solution is to get games that are actually built for iOS and thus work without sh!tty virtual buttons. iOS is never going to be a good platform for games with conventional control methods.

And you're generally right. That's why Castle Clout clones, Fruit Ninja, Cut The Rope, Infinity Blade, etc. work so well on iOS devices-they're generally made with touchscreen input in mind. (Though Infinity Blade still has the drawback of using virtual buttons for dodging and blocking, which are spread out too far apart on an iPad...but the slashing motions make a great analog to Punch-Out!!'s left punch/right punch buttons and high/low punches. Hmmm...what if they made swipes dodge motions and taps attacks?) Still, a lot of us here on GameSpot like more traditional games, and the lack of traditional controls is going to hold them back as gaming devices because of that. The ideal portable gaming device not only has the touchscreen and accelerometer/gyroscope, but all the tried-and-true physical gaming controls we're used to. That way, it can pretty much handle every kind of game without control problems.

iOS gaming could very well kill off both Sony and Nintendo Handhelds in a few years.

And look how well Nintendo is doing now. It's not anywhere close to killing off the portable market.

Just like with console games, you are going to have to research before you buy. Don't tell me you go to videogame store and pick up whataever has good box art?

the problem is not too many games the problem is them all sucking ass.

i bet i have dl'd 50 demos since i got my phone and not one is worth playing for over 5 mins.

you are better off spending money on netflix or hulu or books for portable entertainment than bothering with shytty phone games.

The problem is that there is no real organization since it ends up being a mix of two different worlds. PC with lots of independents, newbs and who knows what else is out there doing their stuff, be that pro wannabe level or total amateur crap level; and Consoles with Apple being the centralized authority, or in this case trying to be. In the end it's like something similar to the Atari days were Atari had no f***ing idea what to do when the obstacles were present and everyone tried to jump the bandwagon and the market ended up overfilled, mostly with crap.

I bought a Touch with that intent too.

Problem was that I thought some of the games they were charging for were a bit expensive or they just flat out suck.

want that dead space and mass effect game on there though.

But I ended up getting Fancy Pants and Ghost and Goblins.

A short list of games I'm currently enjoying, or recently enjoyed:

- AaaaaAAaaaAAAaaAAAAaAAAAA!!! (Force - Mass x Acceleration)
- Anomaly: Warzone Earth
- Another World (also known as Out of This World)
- Avadon: The Black Fortress
- The Bard's Tale
- Beat Hazard Ultra
- Civilization: Revolution
- Sid Meier's Pirates
- Crimson: Steam Pirates (by Bungie)
- Dead Space
- Driver
- GTA3
- Max Payne
- FIFA 12
- Football Manager 11
- GTA: Chinatown Wars
- SF4 Volt
- King of Fighters
- NBA JAM
- NFS Hot Pursuit
- Plants vs Zombies

I just put Gratuitous Space Battles on my watched list, and I'll pick it up when it goes on sale. The titles I've listed really do just scratch the surface. The iOS library is impressive. I didn't even name the iOS-exclusive titles, just the ones most of you have heard of.

(EDIT: Just to note -- iCloud + Beat Hazard = Endless Win. Best music game in history, especially when your library goes with you everywhere seamlessly. Crazy good.)

Didn't look at the hundreds of user reviews literally below pictures of the game completely and easily available to look at? You didn't deserve that $1 in the first place.

There are some good games out there. You just have to put your expectations as a mobile flash game device. It's not aimed for us as actual gamers who come to post on a video game website. It's more aimed to pass the time here and there, otherwise I'm sure the iPhones would come with bigger batteries if their main purpose was gaming.

I know the iPhone doesn't support flash, but I was talking about games you could find on kongregate on a PC, for free.

He's right, there are way more good flash games than iOS games. Not necessarily on Newgrounds, but overall. The lack of portability is what breaks the comparison.

No demos? Did you not see the lite versions of practically all the games? So that covers points one two and three. Not sure about point two, none of my games ever crash.

I'm really amazed people put this much care into iOS gaming. Do you really spend this much in public transportation? Because the image of somebody playing iOS games in his home, when he has access to PC or console seems really weird to me.

Sometimes I just want to lay in bed and play something, or use the internet. Too lazy to go sit at my computer.

Or if I'm going out somewhere I might need to kill 5 minutes, and my iPod is the most portable entertainment I have.
