For once in my life, i agree with a cow.

The TC is right on everthing, except Bioshock. I haven't played bioshock, but I'm the kind of person who enjoys story over gameplay and graphics, as long as the story is actually good. That is why I think bioshock will be fun for me.

Sorry to disagree, but no, games aren't all about fun. Just look at other entertainment mediums. Do books have to be fun to be great books? Do films have to be fun? Am I going to read 1984 and say 'wow that was fun' no, of course not. Does that make it any less of an amazing book? No. It isn't just about fun, its about the experiance as a whole. Would Resident Evil 4 have been a great game if it didn't have a sense of tension throughout? Or would Ico have been as good without its haunting atmosphere? Fun is good, yes, but fun can also be shallow. It takes many things to make something great, it has to have good design, atmosphere, it has to be compelling. If a game is just fun it will not excel. For something to be truly great it must take 'fun' and surpass it, turn a laugh into a gasp and make the reader/watcher/player compelled to play on because they know they will have an amazing experiance. z_gaming_master

I think your chain of thoughts are the prime example of what the current gaming industry is going through. But games are just games. Life is full of amazing experiences, but game is not one of those.

i agree with your statement, new next gen super uber graphics game do not capture the fun of playing like it did when i was a kid. like mario, zelda, deus ex and starcraft.

gears impressed me graphically, but gameplay wasnt as great and did not get a high rank in my book.

halo did it better with a engaging story and competitve gameplay halo>gears

forza 2 is a pretty game with no inspiring gameplay whatsoever, maybe the genre is becoming too linear.

i think the industry is trying to make games more of an "experience" than a game. they somewhat forgot that plain old fun is what most of us remember playing consoles as kids.

I own Oblivion, and personally... I didn't have much fun with it. Besides oggling at the graphics, there really wasn't much that I enjoyed. Though, cheating to get the best gear in the game and trying to kill the entirety of Imperial City is fun. But that gets boring after 10 minutes of pwning the guards.

Yep Oblivion is a perfect example of what the topic creator is talking about. The game had excellent graphics and higher production values than Morrowind (voice-overs and what not) but itis not half the game Morrowind was (I wouldn't call Morrowind fun but it was interesting and a great experience). Reviewers loved Oblivion as well as Gears because of their technical prowess but seemed to ignore Oblivions lack of soul and Gears lack of content.

Alot of people should really consider leaving VG's if they agree to this statement.

VGshave andalways shouldbe fun to play. I think a better word to use rather than fun is enjoyment.

Agreed. No other game is this more apparent than Killzone 2...

They should just have 2 different dev teams, one working on the presentation, and one working on the game itself.
