Also don't forget that by buying a PS3, we are giving money to a country that does not believe in the American way of life.  I say you should stick with the Xbox 360 and buy quality over anything from Sony.   That's just my two cents.

Good day.

americangamerx

I'll stick with buying anything that appears to be better. If its American, Japanese, Chinese, whatever. Competition is part of the American way of life so America better learn to win my dollars by competing, not winning my dollars with blind consumer acceptance.

[QUOTE="HarlockJC"]I think the PS3 I can afford one if I wanted to. But for the same price I can take my family to Disney World. I had the money to buy one and again for the same price I got my kids a swing set. Has a father if I had just $600 extra to spend on a game system it hard to spend that on myself and not something for my family. And trust me I want one but I will not spend the $600 on one. I may get the core off of ebay they go for a lot less than retail.flinnha

I'm with this guy.  Those of us oldies in "the real world" have mortgage, property taxes, etc to worry about.  I could afford the $600 and probably not notice it's missing - but I have a hard time justifying doing so when I think of other uses for that money.  I hate growing up :(

I saddly concur . Back in college I spent my money a lot more freely then I do not even thought I have a much more of it. That is something that people not living in the "real word" can't understand till they are there. There is a big diffrence between being able to pay for something, and willing to buying a toys (yes video games are toys) for yourself. Your value system changes a lot the older you get, or aleast it should.

[QUOTE="VideoGameGuy"]Uhh it is EXPENSIVE. In fact it's one of the most expensive consoles ever made! What are you people talking about saying it's not expensive? What if Blu-ray fails? Pretty expensive useless blu-ray player you got there. It doesn't nearly have enough home media options (right now) to be considered a great all-in-one media center.I could buy it right now but no way am i going too, that price is probably the biggest turn-off to gaming that the world has ever seen.VideoGameGuy

If Blu-Ray movies die the PS3 will always get games. Look at the PSP, still being supported, still selling just fine, even though as a movie format UMD died.

Yeah i know the games will benefit greatly from Blu-ray, having to pay so much just so your game can fit on one disc instead of two or three..or four...i guess LOL, is kinda a rip-off though, i mean if you already bought a PS3, you most likely bought it for all the features, blu-ray movie playback being one of the biggest, so won't you be just a tad bit upset if one of the biggest and most hyped features of your console ends up being a bust?

Well right now Blu-ray discs are outselling HD-DVD so I don't really have to worry about that do I?

It has nothing to do with it being "affordable". It's called being either a "wise investment" or an "unwise investment". 80% of NA dosen't own an HDTV. Thus, they can't use Bluray - thus, it's a "unwise investment".

You do realise that when the ps2 lanched in australia it was $750 which is abit over 600 american dollars and now the ps3 is $1000 so it really isn't a huge price change.DriftMax

Just like the guy before me said, i'm a poor college student who easily afforded one.  Last summer i was an electrician's apprentice. I made $8 an hour, but often worked overtime (my longest week was 56 hours) and pulled in around 4k over 3 months.  I easily spared $600 of that for a ps3, and another $250 for a Wii.makingmusic476

$8/hr ?! Christ. At the current exchange rate that is £4/hr, nearly one pound below the minimum wage over here I believe. I make the equivilant of $13/hr, and I still consider that pretty crappy.

[QUOTE="SergeantSnitch"][QUOTE="Firelore29"]

Most consumes are all about earned value. Sony's basic buisness model for the PS3 said consumers want HD players and they get one along with a great video game console (and a home media center blah). It's basically the exact same model they used for the PS1 (cd player/vcd player) and the PS2 (dvd player). Unlike the previous two systems, however, the PS3 is way to expensive. The average consume cannot afford 600 dollars as that is a boatload of money.

The PS2 by contrast was released at 300 which was considered by many (including myself) to be too expensive even at that. That system was released at the end of 2000 which was only 6 years ago. Six years and inflation has caused gaming consoles to double in price?

I think the real problem is that people look at that 600 dollars and they say to themselves... Hey I can get that or I can get a Wii and a 360 for less money. I think the average casual basically says 600 dollars #)(@ that I'm buying a new TV (or something simlar).

Feel free to go off about the cell and the cost of blue ray players and how I don't know jack about economics but I think the sales numbers speak for themselves.

Firelore29

I agree it is a bit overpriced but the 360 is no bargain either.  There are hidden costs to the system.  All in all, I think Sony should have priced the PS3 at $500.  That would be a much better move.

500 would have been better.  Sony simply put to much technology into the system which forced them to price it that high.

There are hidden costs on Sony's system to you realize.  It doesn't even come with the HD cables.

dont put HDMI cables in the argument, i can buy you 100 HDMI cables if u want.

I think this is the key point. Your average joe is not going to walk into walmart and see the PS3 sitting on a shelf with a sticker that says $600 and say "wow thats cheap". Nor are they going to care that it plays blu-ray discs.

Sure there is a percentage of the population that will be interested in blu-ray because they have shiny new HD TV's, but this is by far the minority. Most people are more then happy to watch DVD's on their SD television sets. At the end of the day, most people look to consoles to play games. $600 is just too much money for most people for a gaming machine.
