I read all this talk about how people think the PS3 will actually out sell the 360. I doubt it will even come close. Here is why...

The PS3 just recently dropped the price of the PS3, and Sony is losing even more money on each system sold. MS on the other hand hasn't dropped the price on the 360 in over a year, and i'm not sure how much money MS loses on each 360 sold but i'm sure they would make it back from Xbox Live easily.

This being said MS has a lot more lean way than Sony does with pricing, Sonyalready is losing a ton of money and dropping there price even more would hurt them even more. Where as MS is making alot of money on the 360. Anytime MS wants theycould just drop the price of the 360 and they would still be making money due to all the money they get from, Live and all those accesories like the wireless adapter.

Even right now with the 360 going head to head with the PS3 in pricing, the 360 is doing quite well considering the PS3 has quite a few features the 360 is lacking such as Blu-Ray, Wi Fi included, and free online service.

So basically if the PS3 continues to outsell the 360, MS will simply drop the price of the 360 and will start out selling the PS3 easily.

So sorry guys but the PS3 aint gonna catch up in sales, EVER and will have to settle with last place. Poor Sony going from first to last in one gen.

No they simply replaced the Pro model with the Elite. Not really a price a drop.

If PS3 outsells the 360 by 32k a month for five years it still wouldn't catch up. However i don't believe sales define how great a console is so fighting over it is useless in my opinion.

Yes we are on gamespot, however we are on the system wars fourm. Sales are a big part of systems if you ask me, and they play a major role in who gets more games, and which system wins.

Yeah, Microsoft cut U$100 of Elite 1 week after PS3 price cut. And was outsold by 1.4 million units in 2 months.

If you want to be technical you could say the Elite had a $100 price drop. However all MS really did was replace the Pro with the Elite.

Sony are already eyeing PS3 profitability, so what makes you think they can't drop the price even further in the future.

ok, that came out wrong. What I mean is that with the price drop and PS3 slim it's obvious there is still a massive demand for it from people who don't own one yet. And TC is assuming that the current sale rate will stay the same. Nobody knows yet what any of the companies are planning so the sales could go any way. My point came off a bit harsh, since TC quite obviously thinks that PS3 doesn't even have a chance to outsell 360. I'm not saying it will but his reasoning is flawed. .

Can you please explain what is flawed about it?

The 360 can lower it's price and still make money, where as PS3 cannot. Therefore the 360 will just out price the PS3, so the PS3 will never catch up.

lol how is sony losing money on every system going to affect how it sells hardware ? this thread = fail.

you also forgot to mention that 360 also had a price drop and gave out games like halo and gta and still is not managing to move systems enough.

i can agree, but you have to admit, his point makes sense, MS can lower the price of the 360 at anytime (and they will after the new year) and still make a profit, whereas sony cannot do the same with the PS3. So, i guess he is saying that PS3 will never outsell 360 because MS will always have the price advantage?? If so, that would be true. But, i think if somehow the consoles remained the same price, or PS3 launched at the same time, and at the same price as 360, that PS3 would be in the lead because the brand name is stronger.

Never say never. While it's not likely, stranger things have happened. It's not like it really matters much, anyways. Both console are great, no matter what place they're in.

The question is whether or not outselling the PS3 is more important than being profitable. If Sony is losing money and Microsoft is making money with a larger US installed base then why rush to stimulate more sales on a loss of total profits? Pachter already mentioned the Wii situation; had Nintendo priced their console at the $300 spot on launch and dropped the price later they might've made much more money than they did. Microsoft dropping its price to cause more sales of its system simply doesn't compute. Outside of September's gaudy numbers the lead built by the PS3 isn't so substantial. In fact, PS3 may not get the better of the 360 this holiday season. I understand this plays into your point that the PS3 will never catch up, but the assumption of the price cut is a bit juvenile. Sony made the price cut because they were getting signals of a slow death for their console and they needed to gear up and take blows in order to extend their lifespan and increase their future chance in the industry. Microsoft took a loss in their games division until what? 2007? 2008? It's not about swinging dicks, it's about financial health.

On the other hand; a $99 core console and $199 elite to coincide with the launch of Natal ($250 bundle?) would make a lot of sense. That is Microsoft trying to eek in on Nintendo territory and taking a loss might be more suitable in that regard. Microsoft blows its load without focusing on taking a share of Nintendo's hardware/software pie.

Yeah man i agree with what you said, companies care about money first. I just think if the PS3 is to continue out selling the PS3, it would make sense for MS to drop the price, since they can afford it anyways. Sony cannot however.

I love the idea of the $250 Natal bundle though. Natal is already getting pretty good press, (Time's top 100 inventions, numerous other magazines) so if they did that, 360 sales would sky rocket i would think.

PS3 will probably outsell 360 total sales this gen is if PS3's console generation lasts 3 years longer than 360's. If both console gens end at roughly the same time, then no way PS3 catches up.

Answer this, why is PS3 out selling or selling the same as the 360 month to month when 360 has a $199 unit out there? If anything 360 should be killing PS3 in sales. So somethings telling me that people don't really want a 360. If PS3 keeps at the pace they are with the prices and good games they will pass the 360 in maybe a few years if not less.

Where is your proof that Sony cannot afford to lower their price? Sony continually refines their systems that allow price reductions, look at the PS2, PSX and currently the PS3 slim as examples. The components will continually come down in cost, especially Blu-ray which should accomodate another price decrease easily for Sony.

The PS3 is on pace to pass up the Xbox 360 in sales worldwide even after a year lag, it will happen but it is just a matter of when.

It is unlikely the PS3 will outsell the 360. That being said, it'll probably catch up a respectable amount. It just seems very unlikely that it'll pass it in sales.

But they didn't so your point is moot..

The reality is that The 360 is currently 7 million units ahead and at the rate both are selling it will be several years before teh PS3 pulls ahead,by which time the cows will be salivating over CGI movies of KZ6 at Sony's E3 2014 conference.

The Wii will never sell more than the PS3 or 360.

MGS4 and GTA4 will never score a 10 on Gamespot.

No FPS will ever outsell Halo.

MGS4 will come to the 360.

Factor 5 simply can't make a bad game.

Duke Nukem Forever will be here soon.

The 360 will never have many JRPGs.

Blu-ray will never be needed for games.

The Wii is just a fad.

The PS3's sales will slow down a few weeks after the slim and price cut and the 360 will be back on top of it in weekly worldwide sales in no time.

I could go on. :|

All it needs is to be on the market for like a year after the 360 loses support... Ever think of that? The 360 is only ahead cause of the year head start, if it stops production and the PS3 keeps going for another year...

In system wars the PS3 has a slim chance of catching the 360 in sales, but in the real world its next to impossible. Since common sense is a very precious commodity in SW we get threads like PS3 will outsell 360 by next year.

In system wars the PS3 has a slim chance of catching the 360 in sales, but in the real world its next to impossible. Since common sense is a very precious commodity in SW we get threads like PS3 will outsell 360 by next year.

Lol this, also to adress whose who say it had a one year start. Its such a bad and stupid argument, even sony dont use it, theyve never mentioned it to their shareholder like 'yeah were beating the 360....if you dont count the one year start'. Business isnt fair, MS beat them out got 7 million more sales. If you say thats unfair isnt it unfair sony had a massive advantage in having the Playstation name? my new arugment the 360 is beating the PS3 by 20 million units if you dont count everyone who had Ps2 or Ps1..

You're right the 360 fell off a 300ft cliff and broke. The PS3 wont follow it down there so it can't catch it. You're right.

i dun think MS can afford lowering the price more, and even if they can, they are greedy so they won't, not soon anyway.

Simple economics says MS can afford to drop the price, even if that means taking a loss on every unit sold. 360 has the highest software sales, highest attach rate, is currently making a profit on hardware, MS publishes games on PC, and the juggernaut that is Live subscription fees = all say that MS can effectively offset any loss that would possibly come with a price drop. Sony is not so fortunate. The whole "MS is greedy" stigma going around just baffles me. What company you know ISNT greedy?? You think sony put bluray in PS3 for the consumer?? Because it was needed?? No, they did it to get bluray into homes so it would become standard, and its working. People need to wake up and stop thinking about these companies as family members. They dont care about you or me as individuals, instead its our collective pocket books ;)

So in this fantasy world did the Xbox and Halo exist or no?

If not, the PS3 would be ahead by 40mil units, logic=fail

Nah, it will, just so late into the generation or not even until the next one has started. It'll be completely irrelevant.

Never say never. You would be right if WW sales = NPD but you forget the rest of the world. PS3 is selling much better than 360 in Japan and Europe with the potential to sell even way more as FF13 and GT5 release in both regions.
