The PS3 will never catch the 360.

yea but your only considering north american sales, you gota look world wide in japan the 360 is non existant and in europe the ps3 is pretty strong too, so while the ps3 may never overtake 360 sales in north america, I think its got a good chance to overtake the 360 in worldwide sales and to sony/microsoft/nintendo a sale is a sale no matter where it comes from its all $$$ to them.

It's basic math, even if you estimate xbox is only 6 million units ahead, for PS3 to catch up it would have to outsell xbox 500,000 per month to catch up in 1 year 250,000 per month to catch up in 2 years 166,666 per month to catch up in 3 years 125,000 per month to catch up in 4 years 100,000 per month to catch up in 5 years With PS3 dropping to a reasonable price range and only outselling XBOX by a small margin, it's just not feasible. Who knows though, it 4d and 120 fps are realized by teh cell, maybe? :P

I read all this talk about how people think the PS3 will actually out sell the 360. I doubt it will even come close. Here is why...

The PS3 just recently dropped the price of the PS3, and Sony is losing even more money on each system sold. MS on the other hand hasn't dropped the price on the 360 in over a year, and i'm not sure how much money MS loses on each 360 sold but i'm sure they would make it back from Xbox Live easily.

This being said MS has a lot more lean way than Sony does with pricing, Sonyalready is losing a ton of money and dropping there price even more would hurt them even more. Where as MS is making alot of money on the 360. Anytime MS wants theycould just drop the price of the 360 and they would still be making money due to all the money they get from, Live and all those accesories like the wireless adapter.

Even right now with the 360 going head to head with the PS3 in pricing, the 360 is doing quite well considering the PS3 has quite a few features the 360 is lacking such as Blu-Ray, Wi Fi included, and free online service.

So basically if the PS3 continues to outsell the 360, MS will simply drop the price of the 360 and will start out selling the PS3 easily.

So sorry guys but the PS3 aint gonna catch up in sales, EVER and will have to settle with last place. Poor Sony going from first to last in one gen.

a blue-ray player with PS3's video feature is around $200 now, so it makes PS3 ($299)very attractive to consumers.

regarding to price cut.

both companies are capable of doing price war.

microsoft can make $ back from game sales, but sony can make money from selling games and blue-ray movies.

the more PS3 they sell, the more games and "blue-ray" movies they sell.

so Microsoft wouldnt get any advantage on price cut.

And topic is not irrelevant as long as cows try to use the 1yr head start as an excuse.........like you did. Fact remains that 1yr means nothing if the market wants/responds to your product. Dreamcast came out first, had a head start, yet the PS brand was too strong. PS3 came out later as well. The fact that it did not mimic the success of the PS2 shows that the brand name is not as strong as the PS2 because of decisions made by sony. The one year head start is simply no excuse when the entire industry was behind the PS3 prior to any consoles being released. Had sony released a console similar to 360.........with DVD, and slapped PS3 on it, they wouldve beat 360 AND the Wii, but they got arrogant, cocky, and greedy. Remember the "next gen doesnt start until we say so" comment??

Guy, you know the Arcade doesn't have a HDD. Everyone knows that the Arcade technically costs $300 dollars because you have to buy a HDD with it.

a couple of years ago when it looked like the ps3 was set to release and outsell the 360 i said at the time i didn't care what place the 360 ended up at because it was a good system and i was glad that i owned one....

well the 250GB only costs $50 more than the 120GB model while the elite did cost $100 more than the pro...so its hard to say but if i think if they did replace the the slim with something worth a $100 more it would affect sales moderately not a whole lot but it definately would.

anyways if you think the ps3 will NEVER catch up to the 360 you better think again because the ps3 has a 10 year shelf life so although nobody can say for sure i think theres still a lot of the 120 million PS2 owners holding onto their ps2 and waiting for maybe the $199 price point...

Yes we are on gamespot, however we are on the system wars fourm. Sales are a big part of systems if you ask me, and they play a major role in who gets more games, and which system wins.

Really? I thought system wars was about who can get more enjoyment out of their system. I did not realize that Sony's or Microsoft's or Nintendo'sprofit margins were important to that. If a company has problems, thats their problem. If a company leaves the market, someone else will replace them.

On a side note, neither Sony nor Microsoft makes their bank on game consoles, that is more of a long term investment in LTE concepts. But thats another matter.
