7.1>>>>>>>>>anything elseheretrix
and I only have a 5.1 system...so it would be so sweet if I had a 7.1 surround sound system
we know, unless you have a top of the line audio setup then you wont notice. thegoldenpoo
I have a good 5.1 system and I notice

again it is uncompress sound that makes it clear and better. when you compress sound (dvd) it losses some of the sound quality.wait ive remembered something, bioshock is coming to ps3.
oh my god, the audio will rock. Bioshock in 7.1 surround = ultimate immersion. ps3 owners are in for a treat, if not an overdue one.

There are various types of "lossless" compression.[QUOTE="chikenfriedrice"][QUOTE="thegoldenpoo"]we know, unless you have a top of the line audio setup then you wont notice. thegoldenpoo

yeah beacuse I switch back and forth and I have to turn up the volume for 360 games cuz I get used to the PS3's lol

Bioshock had great sound so yeah enjoy! I may even play it again on the PS3 for the hell of it
If nothing else the PS3 sounds better because it doesnt sound like your game console is a dirt devel vaccum, lol.carljohnson3456

lol I know, I just had to take it!
But I'm playing on an SDTV with no surround sound, so sound doesnt isnt really a big deal to me. But imagine trying to play Gears of War in the middle of the night with the TV at a relatively low volume... while the 360 is choking out air. lol. It doesnt bother me really though.

yeah with 5.1 I don't really notice the loudness of the 360...but yeah with low volume it may annoy me lol
Lossless (not uncompressed, as far as I know no one uses uncompressed) audio will only make a noticable difference if the source material contains frequencies that are removed by lossy compression, so whether or not you notice a difference will depend on 3 things:
For example, you're not going to notice the benefits of lossless audio if your source material is simplistic. Case in point, we can compare the file sizes of two songs in the WMA Lossless format -- Boards of Canada's Kaini Industries and Yeasayer's 2080. Despite both being in the same format, Kaini Industries has a bitrate of 417kb/s, while 2080 has a bitrate of 1017kb/s. Why? Because 2080 has more "complex" audio -- ie more frequencies -- it can only be compressed to 1017kb/s without affecting the sound quality.
This translates to gaming as well. For example MGS 4 has (from what I've heard) quite possibly the best audio in the history of gaming. As a result you would likely lose much of the detail in MGS4's audio if it were in a lossless format. However you're not going to notice the difference in a game with simplistic audio such as, say, a classic game from PSN.
Your sound system is just as important. If you're listening through TV speakers or some cheap HTiaB, you're speakers and/or reciever may not be able to produce the high-quality sound lossless audio affords.
Finally you're not going to notice the difference if you're not listening for it. Lossy audio is designed to remove the hard-to-hear frequencies, so if you're not listening for the detail afforded by lossless audio, you probably won't notice it.
get an optical cable and listen to planet earth in 5.1/7.1 surround on ps3.. sounds AWESOME. better than any game IMO.useLOGIC
yeah I use optical cables for both consoles....but have not watched planet earth yet :)

Then you guys need your hearing checked.
The PS3 is incapable of transmitting losless condecs (TrueHD or DTS MA) or LPCM over optical. The only way the PS3 can transmit these signals is through HDMI hooked directly to your receiver.
If you are using optical for your PS3, and you select LPCM (I believe all PS3 games with the high quality audi use this rather than True HD or DTSMA, although they are all identical, DTSMA and TrueHD just save space by compressing it, but since they are lossless and not lossy no quality is lost) then you are getting 2.0 STEREO sent to your receiver. Your receiver will matrix the signal and send it out to your speakers as "phonied" 5.1. In other words, this sort of audio would be far worse than the 360's, or even a true lossy 5.1 track (like regular DTS or regular Dolby Digital 5.1, like the stuff 360 games and regular DVD's use.)
PS3 can't pass lossless audio or LPCM over optical. You need to use HDMI to get that audio out of your PS3. Toslink (optical) does not have the bandwidth to pass LPCM, True HD, or DTSMA.

well I use HDMI for video and optical for audio....how am I supposed to get audio from the HDMI cablr cuz it's connected from my PS3 to my HDMI switcher?
[QUOTE="chikenfriedrice"]now I have to turn the volume up on the 360 games to compete! lollowe0Psychoacoustics at work. Humans innately think a louder sound is better. It's an old speaker salesman's trick.
LOL @ ur sig. I was going to do the same thing to him. He said I didn't have Crysis either...
I asked him if I proved it to never post again. Sadly, he didn't take the offer.

Most TVs with HDMI inputs have digital audio outs to route through to the receiver. But again, the bandwidth may get in the way if you're going beyond compressed 5.1.To go beyond that, you need a receive that can take an HDMI input...and preferably HDMI switching so you can pass through to the TV.
how many people have spent a couple grand on a 7.1 losless audio system?shoeman12
I spent under a grand for my setup
Onkyo 705 receiver
Polk audio RM 10 speakers (Center, Rear and Rear surround)
Polk audio monitor 30's (Front L&R)
Polk audio subwoofer (PSW 303)
You just gotta know what to look for and where to look. This is an awesome sounding setup with a nice clean sound. And really affordable.
I have owned the 360 since launch and love it....just recently bought the PS3....now so far the PS3 has not impressed me in terms of graphics, games, interface, PSN, when compared to the 360...and Bluray is great but doesn't look any better than HDDVD.....but when playing PS3 games I have noticed that the sound is way better than the 360's and now I have to turn the volume up on the 360 games to compete! lolchikenfriedriceit sounded better because you turned the volume up?
why don't you get an optical audio cable for a surround sound system and really see how great both the 360 and ps3 sound instead of making claims off of left right sterio speakers
For me the one game that really stands out for the sound quality is F1:CE. The sound of the engines whilst goin through the rev range is absolutely identical to the real thing, u could close ur eyes and u would think it was an actual race on the tv.
All the games on my old 360 sounded very good in DD but i really can tell the difference with the ps3, anyone who says u cant is talkin rubbish. Yeh its nice to have a top of the range sound system but my mid range setup produces a very warm and clear sound that does indeed sound far better than the 360 did.

Hell yeah for Polks. I have a pair of R30s up front, 2 R15s in back (2 more in the closet for when I get around to stringing up some wire), and a CS1 in the center, driven by a Pioneer VSX-1015TX (the 101n is the one good receiver Pioneer makes each year). I went with a Klipsch Sub-12 for the low end, though - that thing rocks the house hard. Please Log In to post.
