http://kotaku.com/gaming/top/rumor-no-denying-it-psp2-is-coming-242845.php

And not only that, it looks like it's coming later this year. There have been rumors ever since the DS Lite hit that Sony was also planning a redesign of its portable. Some of those rumors have ground in reality, some of them are just wishful thinking. Nothing official has been announced, and Sony has shot down any chatter regarding a redesign saying it's not happening. With all this, PSP2 looks to be a pipe-dream — Like it's not happening.

Apparently, it is.

Various third party and highly placed sources state that the PSP2 is coming. Speculation is swirling around the industry, and third party publishers are hoping to tie their games to the PSP2 launch. Thing is, Sony has yet to pass along any information about when that will be. Meaning we won't see big third party titles at launch.

Word has it that a big announcement will most likely hit at E3 with Sony unveiling the redesigned portable. An announcement of launch date (which should be sometime 4th quarter) is entirely possible as well. The redesigned product apparently does exist as this is what we've heard so far:

  • The screen is gorgeous
  • The loads are faster
  • Improved buttons
  • Internal flash — 8GB
  • Possible touch-screen
  • Possible built-in camera
  • Uses UMD

The recent blockbuster success in Japan should prove that the PSP is anything but dead and deserving of a make-over. Stay tuned!

Still a rumor...but we know it's coming.  Maybe it'll be announced at E3?

I'm surprised they did come out with one sooner. But its kinda of hard to improve on the areas that the PSP lacked the most in, such as a second analogue nub, with out making the older system useless. But if it decreases load times, I'm all for it. Not that I would buy one though...

Why would they switch sides mid stream. I expect they would wait till the real PSP 2, rather than an updated version.

Good, a redesign would be a waste of time and money. Sony doesn't need to do it in the handheld market.

It'll be nothing more than a makeover(The updated PsP will more than likely be a thinner and more glossier Psp),financially,it would be a bad move for Sony to release the PsP 2 this year/next year.

I hope it doesn't have a touch screen because:

a) It would be awful for current PSP owners, some games would have features they couldn't take advantage of.
b) I know companys take ideas from others and what have you, but if it did use touchscreen that would not only be a sign of Sony's inability to innovate, but also prove Nintendo were one step ahead.

Sounds good, the only thing that I hope doesn't happen is that the PSP become more secure which would mean that all the downloaded games I have become worthless.

in what way am i being naive? sony steals a lot. n64 had analog, playstation suddenly gets analog. then a generation passes, and soon after the wiis motion sensing is revealed, sony reveals that the ps3 will have tilt.  then they get thyeir ass handed to them by the ds, and now theres a possible touch screen? seriously, think of these things.

the only thing sonys done without copying someone else is dual analog. but if your gonna keep hiding behind a statement like that, then lets look at it from a different perspective...

by doing something like copying from other companies, sony is sending the public a message that they lack innovation. they just give you what other companies are offering. instead of doing something new that you can only get from them. their offering you something that others can offer you too.but istead of just sending you this message, like someone said before, they are also sending nintendo the message that they are one step ahead of sony.

Maybe Im just saying that maybe multinational corporations have 0 morals? Maybe they even lack the high school 14 years olds' morals? Like most people's here?
What are they sending? Maybe the message that they include everything that other companies do COMBINED? That they allow GTA like games to be created on their consoles?

Releasing a new version of the same generation handheld with new features like a touchscreen and such would be kinda screwing over the people who already have a PSP. I think either the rumour is false, or the part about the touchscreen is false. The next generation Sony handheld probably will have a touchscreen though. It seems like Nintendo has found the trick to get around Sony's duplicating tendencies - include a hardware feature so different that Sony can't adopt it for itself until the next generation.

I doubt that the PSP2 is coming unless they can copy the recent success of the handheld in Japan right now over to North America and Europe. No doubt existing owners of the PSP will be upset about the PSP2 because it's just like the DS and DS Lite all over again. The touch screen is a nice feature but what happens if a game comes out that uses the touch screen? Will PSP owners be able to control the game in the same way as PSP2 users?

Surveys have been done about owners of cell/mobile phones and one of the biggest features they wanted to see was a longer battery life. It's a shame that link didn't say anything about longer battery life.

I think it's too late to update the system now. Concentrate on making great games and market the thing more.

I see your saying nintenod invented the touch screen which is very wrong how many years have pdas had them for? sony would add it to make the internet more usable, touch screen in games doesn't have much point.
