[QUOTE="whocares4peace"]http://www.news.com/8301-10784_3-9740021-7.htmlThe company said it will cover machines that experience such failures for up to three years from the date of purchase. To cover the cost of the new policy, Microsoft said it will take a pre-tax charge of $1.05 billion to $1.15 billion in its just-ended quarter.

That doesn't tell you how much it is costing them. That tells you how big of a charge they took against a single quarter's earnings in order to help pay for the repairs on the 11.6 million sold at that time. For all we know, it could cost them $3 billion, they just don't need to charge that all at once.
Actually the 1.05 - 1.15 is cost for the entire life of the console for all consoles they estimated they would have an issue with for the balance of their production of the 360.
Its a pretty common tactic in finance, they take the entire hit in one shot in a quarter they were going to lose money in so moving forward the warrenty issue is already behind them and any monies they pay upto 1.15 billion has already been applied against the books as an expense, this allows them to spend X amount a quarter on repairs and not have it take away from earnings on the books for that quarter because they frontended the expense.
This also allows for them at the end of the 360's life cycle to take any money left from that 1.15 billion (+ Whatever interest it has earned sitting there being picked away at) and put it back on the books as a means to falsely inflate profit when the sales will be on the decline as it approaches endlife.
There has been no indication that the RROD problem will cost more then the money alloted, and if it did based on any trends they would be required to make an adjustment in their next quarterly earnings report to reflect that.
If the total cost was 3 billion as you may have estimated there would be an indication of that, and thus far it seems like the money set aside was more then enough.
think about it Lemming....Gears 2 on HDDVD.......it will be little longer than 6 hour......aka_aj03
i don't think that is entirely down to disc space....
but seriously if they do pull something like that then pre existing 360 owners better be able to buy the hd dvd add on and join in
[QUOTE="aka_aj03"]That is the only question... if the new SKU is true with thebuild in HDDVD drive--is HDDVD going to be use for gaming as well?

They cant, if future 360 games are on HDDVD, how will 360 owners now be able to play them?
You can put DVD and HD DVD formats on one dics for movies, so I guess they will do that with games. The HD DVD drives will play the HD DVD version, and the old 360s will play the DVD version. And both versions will be on one disc. No more disc changing if true.
that would be just stupid for MS to use HD DVDs for games. they already said they wouldnt, and they sold a TON of consoles that are only DVD compatible. It's WAY too late for the 360 to convert to HD-DVD for games. Late in the life of the 360, you'll see the 360 games being alot smaller than Ps3 (bluray) games. THEN MS will release a new Xbox.
IF for some reason MS decided to release games on HD-dvd, I would then sell my 360 and only play my roomates Ps3.
Maybe Kojima will decide to do MGS4 on HDDVD too if he chose to.... aka_aj03Was it confirmed for 360?
Microsoft will not use HD-DVD's for gaming purposes on the Xbox 360. Why? There is already an almost 13 million user database and I'm almost sure that only maybe a few hundred thousand have HD-DVD reading capabilities. Sure the new rumored "Xbox 360 Ultimate" supposedly has the HD-DVD drive but it will only be used for movies. Microsoft and developers know that they can't leave nearly 13 million users out in the cold because they would lose massive support which leads to depleted profits (the one thing businesses care about).
However, Microsoft might use HD-DVD for the next generation system but DVD-9 is "fine" for now according to Microsoft and numerous developers.
No. That would be suicide for MS. Do you honestly think they are that stupid?mis3ry
Yeas, MS is that stupid...but I still don't think they will actually do it.

You would be surprised...
MS wants to kill all Disc based Media.

aka_aj03
MS might be dumb at times but they are not retarded. IF they did that then they just alienated every single 360 owner to date. DVD9 is the disc format that will be used for the 360. The next xbox might have HDDVD as the disc format used but the 360 won't use HDDVD for gaming.
i think its the worst business move ever, think about it you have millions of customers that own a system where the main format is dvd, to have to buy an external HDDVD player to play games would add at least another 150 dollars for me to spend on top of the amount of money i've spent on games already,i see alot of people bashing the ps3 for their wi-fi and blu-ray disc, but look at it, MS is doing the same exact thing nowAnimal-MotherI guess Sony was right all along.... and MS and Lemming were bashing at Sony for having stuff that were not needed like HDMI.... and they bought out the elite with HDMI... then MS said that HD Format disc is not needed along with lemmings... now there are rumors flying around the internet that may be highly true about bringing out the new SKU with all similar capablities that the PS3 have already.
I guess Sony was right along... even though MS made fun of them... and now they are following Sony foot steps....

Great pic in your sig. I have not seen that one before.

HDMI is not needed for HiDef gaming, but can benefit a certain relatively small demographic.
HD DVD will never be used in a 360 for gaming.
MS said they would put both in over time should a market for them arise.
Are all of these things hard to understand?

1. Then why does the 360 now support HDMI and 1080p upscaling?
2. Then why bundle a HD-DVD drive with the SKUs? Just to play movies? Never before has any console included a more advanced drive just for movies. That would be a more laughable decision then sony's initial decision to push Blu-ray.
You bought into all that MS bullcrap. The fact that the 360 is slowing implementing all those things that the ps3 initially came with is testament that Sony knew beforehand what was needed eventually and what wasn't. MS probably knew that but didn't bother, and spat out tons of damage control statements to justify why the 360 doesn't so call need HDMI, 1080p or HD-DVD and fans like you bought it. If the 360 doesn't need all those things in theory, why is it moving in that direction?

1. Because people asked for it, and HDMI is needed for the 360 to function as an IPTV.
2. Because people asked for it. It would be "more laughable" for MS to let games be shipped on HD-DVD because it would be tantamount to launching a new console.
Your last paragraph is just laughable itself. If Sony knew what was needed then why are they stripping down the PS3 by removing elements, and adding after the fact? Had the 360 launched with HD-DVD in it, the darn thing would have been $800. In the last 2 years the cost of producing HD-DVD drives has plummeted dramatically.
And again... this is just another rumor, taking it for gospel is absurd.

1. So if people asked for it, then it is needed, as opposed to MS claims that HDMI is not needed.
2. Read point 1.
So the fact that Microsoft is adding stuff and charging more for it is considered to be a better predicament?

Just because people asked for it, doesn't mean it is needed. I am not sure how you drew that conclusion. It just means it is wanted and MS is providing it.
Not possible.
Why?
Because its not the standard format for their system this gen.
If they switched over, they would be abandoning all the customers who have a regular 360 or an elite. This would kill them, especially since they already got a ton of bad press when they just forgot about the xbox once the 360 was near.
Console updgrades aren't successful. See Sega CD, Sega 32x...
I have yet to see any reason why any game devolper should go to HD dvd let alone blue ray.. As a pc gamer its a once in a blue moon event to see a game on more then one dvd (excluding all multiplats, not a single one has been on multiple dvds yet).sSubZerOo
well, see you're comparing apples to oranges sorta there. A pc game is MUCH different to a console game for several reasons.
First, PC games are stored on your HD for the most part, and they have recieved much larger updates and patches. Name a great PC game that you can just run right away without installing from the discs? Far Cry was multiple CDs (since some PCs do not have a DVD drive) so that game took forever. Going to a disc that holds more just makes sense. Especially when you have a MUCH smaller HD to work with (the 360 only has 20gb usually). PS3 games require you to instal them, but it's not quite as detailed as a PC game instal. I am sure M$ will have to upgrade to HDdvd games eventually, but not this gen. Nextgen you'll be likely to see Bluray drives and/or HDDVD drives as standard in Consoles. PCs will eventually follow. It's the simple fact that games are getting bigger and bigger. I hope i never have to buy a game for the 360 that has multiple DVDs, but i would be more surpriesed to see a 360 game on HDdvd.
p.s. and game developers are being forced to put their games on bluray because Sony says so. lol
