The game has been out what... a month? Icons take years, if not decades even to form in the minds of people.

Not yet but I can see him being that in the future.

Maybe at Master Cheif level but never at Mario level.

Try showing Sackboy to the general people on the streets and see if they know him at all. All you will prolly get is " Ahhh he is cute but what is it" Maybe he can be considered one when he starts having a cartoon, Movie, mass amounts of toys, clothing, books and so on

Compared to a real icon like Mario, Master Chief is nothing. Master Chief is just popular... he really isn't an icon... yet. He needs to sell a couple hundred million more games.

To a generation of 8-25 year old men he is the gaming icon of the past two generations without a doubt. I don't think sales determine icon status but rather just the ability to be recognized.

Ask anyone on the street aged 8-80 to identify Mario and Master Chief from a picture. I'd bet you hardly anyone who doesn't actually play the games would even know who Master Chief is. When a character is recognized by people who don't even play the games... then you have an icon.

The difference between Mario and Master cheif is that only gamers (with some exceptions) knows about Master Cheif.

If you walk up to a random person on a street and ask if he recognises Mario he probably does but Master Chief is a whole lower level.

In the gaming world Master Cheif is an icon just like Sephirot, Samus Aran, Mega Man, Gordon Freeman and the rest of them. Mario is a whole other level.

When people think Mario the think Gaming, when people think Master Chief they think that good FPS game on Xbox, if even that.

Pikachu is another massive icon. One that took way less time than Mario to achieve such recognizable status.

And Link and Sonic are pretty high up there as well. Their market saturation is incredibly high.

First of all, this is not a thread on "awesomeness."

Second of all, if everyone can be an ICON, why use the word ICON? If everybody's an icon, nobody's an icon.

Since it's all subjective, I'm going to go ahead and say the NPC's in GTAIV are icons.

Pikachu and Sonic I can see but I don't know about Link (Link is on Master Chief Level or slightly higher IMO), anyway Mario is still the biggest gaming icon ever.

Pikachu is a huge icon but I don't really know if he is really a "gaming icon". When people think Pokemon they often don't think gaming.

Maybe they see sackboy on another level than the rest of us.

They could think he (or she) is an icon of what gaming is about (a gigantic fun and creative playground) rather than how huge he is as an recognisable game character.

That's certainly a different way to look at it. I wouldn't agree that that constitutes ICON status, but that is a way to start an argument atleast.

My argument against that would be that it opens the door for countless whacky justifications. I could say that the GTAIV NPC's are a building block of Liberty City and are thus iconic.

Is that an argument? Yes. Is it compelling? No.

So, there are definitely arguments out there, but they may not be good ones. I don't think the whole "icon of what gaming is about" is a good argument simply because I can take another character and come up with more concrete (less abstract) reasons that character is an icon. With Mario, I don't have to use my own abstract notions to prove his icon status.

It's quite mindblowing that one of the only people that made an argument was a person playing Devil's Advocate. Should I simply assume that all the "yes" votes are simply fanboys or is anybody going to explain themselves?

Link has been around the block several times and is a very recognizable character. Maybe not as much as Mario or Pikachu but definitely more than MC. Link and The Legend of Zelda are 11th on the list of best-selling video game franchises. MC and Halo are 45th... behind game series like Donkey Kong, Crash Bandicoot, Tomb Raider, Kirby, Mega Man, Rayman and Metal Gear. If you go by market saturation alone, then all those characters are larger icons than Master Chief.

If Sackboy becomes the new mascot of Sony then maybe in another 5-10 years. But you don't become a gaming icon in a month. Hell, LBP wasn't that huge of the game so he doesn't even have that much notoriety.

The only icons that come to mind are:
Mario
Pikachu
Sonic

And to a Smaller Scale:
Link
Donkey Kong
Pacman

The game is like a month old. What is this, a joke? ONE GAME. That's not iconic. Master Chief is iconic. He's a household name now, like Mario or Sonic. Sackboy is just a little flop. It's like producers who call their own movie "controversial" in the trailers when there's no controversy.

It depends on how high or recognizeable you consider him, and his iconic status.

1. What is Sackboy associated to for gamers?

2. What is Sackboy associated with for people who don't play games?

3. What is Sackboy's definition? Mario is "Nintendo" or "Gaming" and Pikachu is "Pokemon" to many. Sackboy is... "Sony?" or what...?

4. Sackboy is recognized or affiliated to what? How many people out of gaming really know Sackboy or Sackgirl? Sure they are cute and cuddily, but can you pick anyone off the streets and ask them "Do you like sackboy?" or anything of that sort? Also who does Sackboy define, or what?

I think Sackboy could be iconic, if he's more exposed and had more time. He's hardly even an "instant" classic that someone like Master Cheif obtained. Most males or should I say members of gaming in the past two generations know Master Cheif almost. Hell my dad and mom who don't play Halo know who Master Cheif is. However my parents don't know Sackboy at all. I could of course mention Mario or Pikachu and they'd know. Find someone on this world who doesn't, they are that famous. They aren't just icons of Nintendo or Pokemon, but gaming and more.

Oh love the denial. Mr. Bear knows that one can only continue on with nonsensical jabber, such as yourself. However if you'd like to consider your thought of fiction to be reality, go ahead. Doesn't stop Mr. Mario from touting that GOTY '07 over the likes of many other games. Hmm, anymore useless jabber you'd like to throw that doesn't continue to support your side?

It won GOTY not kiddy GOTY. Denial is strong to even consider making up your own GOTY catagory.
