I paid $69.99 for the big box'd earthbound back in 1994. It came in a super sized box with a strategy guide.
How long have these folks have been gaming that they won't pay $70 today? Prices could get that high for cartridge based games along time ago especially some n64 ones.
Two reasons. First off, that game included a strategy guide which at the time usually cost around $15, so you weren't paying for just the game. Secondly, games were more expensive to deliver and bring to market. Printed circuit boards had to be manufactured, ROM chips had to be purchases, SRAM chips and various other components such as resistors and capacitors installed, and a shell had to be molded. That costs significantly more than making something available as a digital download, or pressing out a plastic disc.
Publishers delivering games to their customers have gotten significantly cheaper. That justifies the price for games staying at around the $60 point, or even less. Indie games which have more players and better gameplay than overhyped AAA trash usually only sell for $20-$30. I see indie studios consistently producing better products at a third the price, and generally speaking they put more art and passion into what they create where AAA stuff is entirely about maximizing profits, hence why so many of them use micro transaction, gacha schemes, paid for cosmetics, day 1 DLC, and have even resorted to leaving the endings out of some games to deliver in a paid-for DLC.
Why should anyone pay $70 now when better is available at much, much less?
